Wu Mi's biological mother, Li Ruren, died of illness when she was less than one year old.Wu Mi has no memory of his mother's voice and smile, nor can he imagine it. For this reason, he hates it all his life. Many researchers believe that the lack of maternal love in Wu Mi's childhood has affected his outlook on love throughout his life. Because Wu Mi lost his mother when he was young, his grandmother was afraid that Wu Mi would be left alone to take care of him, so she decided to make 3-year-old Wu Mi the heir of his uncle Wu Jianchang (known as Zhong Qigong).Zhong Qigong was admitted as a deputy tribute student in the Shaanxi Provincial Examination in 1987. He was successful at a young age, bent his bow, rode and shot, and went west to Yangguan, hoping to make contributions in the frontier fortress.Around 1911, Zhong Qigong was the chief of staff and secretary-general of the governor of Shaanxi and Gansu, and the deputy governor of Liangzhou. After resigning, he went to work in Shanghai.Wu Mi deeply admires Zhong Qigong's knowledge, self-cultivation, morality, and friendship, and he is also envious of Zhong Qigong's popularity as a woman who has been admired by women throughout his life.Even Zhong Qigong set foot in the Fengyue Field in Shanghai, and attracted famous prostitutes to compete for favor and jealousy, which was also praised by Wu Mi.Wu Mi only regrets that Zhong Qigong did not "teach him the psychology of women and the skills of love" to himself, so that he has been chasing love for many years, but he is always frustrated.

After Wu Mi became famous as an adult, Yu Youren, a veteran of the Republic of China from his hometown, wrote about their father and son in a poem: Zhong Qigong was far away seeking fame and fame in the northwest border, so Wu Mi's actual life was still taken care of by his father Zhijinggong and Xu Xianlei Ruren.Grandmother Yang Taishu was afraid that Wu Mi would be abused by her stepmother, so she took care of Wu Mi herself. In the winter of 1905, Wu Mi was sent to Beicheng, Sanyuan County, where he studied under Jingyang Wang Lin.The grandmother moved to Sanyuan with Wu Mi, and accompanied her grandson to study until she died of illness in June of the following year.

Wu Mi lived under the doting of his grandmother for 12 years, but this was not a beneficial gift to him.In his later years, Wu Mi recalled his grandmother's doting on him in his self-compiled chronicle, and reflected on the influence of this doting on him: "(1) Doting is too much. It not only makes the whole family dissatisfied, but also develops Mi's many bad habits (2) Mi's emotions throughout her life are very impulsive. Often motivated by temporary emotions, she is stubborn and prejudiced, does her own way, doesn't distinguish right from wrong, and doesn't care about profit or loss (later she repents). She works hard, But I don't know how to seek pleasure, have no feeling of leisure, and have little pleasure. That is: I can work, but I can't rest. I can be tense, but I can't indulge. When dealing with people, there are too many cares and blames—all of the above are similar ( Yang Taishu's personality came from unconscious (unintentional) imitation."

Once because of the conflict between his grandmother and stepmother, Wu Mi was subjected to corporal punishment "only once" in his life: In the autumn of 1904, one night.Mi finished reading "Zuo Zhuan" by Master Chen Ben Qi, and was able to recite it by heart. It was too late when Yang Taishu began to sleep with Mi.In the middle of the night, Yang Taishu got up suddenly and beat Mi severely once. Then he put Mi on the kang bunk and lay prone, and twisted (twisted, pulled) the muscles of Mi's buttocks, legs, arms, etc. with both hands. As for the swelling, Mi cried loudly.Duke Zhijing dared not come, and it was inconvenient for Lei Ruren to come.Only Mama Liu rushed to hear the sound, weeping and holding Mi in her arms, trying her best to rescue and dissuade her.Yang Taishu immediately let go and sat sideways.Tears fell like rain. After a while, Yang Taishu went to sit upright on the chair in the center of the outer hall, and Liu Ma stood sideways, supporting Mi to kneel in front of her.Yang Taishu insisted on sending Mi to the well, and ordered Mi to throw himself into the well to die.Mama Liu remonstrated bitterly and held each other. After that, they were silent until tomorrow morning, when they returned home and went to bed.
