At the end of 1972, the "Criticism of Lin Piao and Confucius Movement" was launched across the country.Liang Shuming participated in the CPPCC study organization for nearly a month, but did not say a word. Therefore, some people said that Liang Shuming and Confucius had an inseparable "class affection".Liang Shuming finally spoke. He spent two and a half days expressing his views on "criticizing Lin and Confucius".He said, I only criticize Lin, not Confucius.Criticizing Confucianism came from criticizing Lin. I don’t see any relationship between Lin Biao and Confucius, so I don’t criticize Confucius. As for criticizing Lin, I don’t think Lin Biao has any political line.

When Liang Shuming talked about this matter in a letter to his friends in Hong Kong, he said: "Because I refused to criticize Confucius, I was politically isolated. But my attitude is to think independently and be consistent, fearless, and let everything take its course." Because Liang Shuming only criticized Lin and not Confucius, the CPPCC study group immediately began to criticize Liang Shuming. From February to September 1974, there were six months of criticism in small groups, followed by a two-month criticism conference. He must come to every meeting and listen carefully. He took it calmly, and even practiced Tai Chi during the interval of the meeting. At the end of September, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference held a concluding meeting to criticize Liang. When a supporter asked Liang Shuming what he thought, he replied word by word: "The three armies can win the commander, but the man cannot lose the ambition." The host ordered Liang to explain.Liang said: "'Pifu' is alone, with no power or power. His last move is to firmly believe in his own 'will'. Anything can take him away, but this 'will' cannot be taken away, that is, Even if he is eliminated, he cannot be taken away!"

In 1976, the "Gang of Four" collapsed. In the atmosphere of "two whatevers", Liang Shuming pointedly said at the meeting of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference: "The Cultural Revolution" was messed up.At this time, the great discussion on the standard of truth has not yet begun, and Liang Shuming's words can be said to be the first. In early 1979, the Fifth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference was held in Beijing. Deng Xiaoping was elected chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and Liang Shuming was elected as a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.Liang Shuming, who was promoted to an "official", fired again at the "Cultural Revolution" at this meeting. He was 85 years old at the time.At that time, although a group of veteran cadres had begun to deny the "Cultural Revolution" in private and expressed different opinions on the "Two Whatevers", Liang Shuming was the first to deny the "Cultural Revolution" in public speeches.

On December 4, 1985, Peking University held a celebration party for Mr. Feng Youlan's 90th birthday. The day before, the Feng family held a private banquet to celebrate.During the preparation, Feng Youlan proposed to invite Mr. Liang Shuming to participate, but Liang said that it was too cold to go out.A few days later, Feng Youlan unexpectedly received a text message from Liang Shuming, to the effect that "the old people of Peking University are now only the two of us, and we should meet. I don't want to come to the birthday banquet just because I once flattered Jiang Qing. If you arrive When I come to talk, I should treat each other with courtesy." Mr. Feng Youlan said, "It's rare to speak so bluntly." Later, Liang and Feng had a meeting.Feng Youlan's daughter, Zong Pu, recalled that four topics were discussed in this interview: Buddhism, youth, life in old age, and the issue of "flattering Jiang Qing".When Feng's father and daughter got up to say goodbye, Mr. Liang suddenly asked: "How is your mother?" Zong Pu replied: "My mother passed away in October 1977. At that time, everyone was in the joy of the fall of the 'Gang of Four', and I My mother was criticized because of her father, her medical treatment was hasty, and she was in a bad mood. She died amidst all kinds of worries." Two old men who had gone through vicissitudes of life held hands and sighed at each other...
