Xiong Shili was born in 1885. He himself only knew the year of birth but not the exact birthday. Later, when his disciples wanted to celebrate his birthday, they tentatively set it as the fourth day of the first lunar month. for the sake. In 1914, Mr. Xiong married Han (Fu) Jiguang, the youngest daughter of Han Yue (Fu Xiaozhen), an old scholar, in Huanggang.Fu Xiaozhen's surname is Han, and his uncle's surname is Fu. Fu Xiaozhen's generation began to belong to the clan. The Han family has been a scholarly family for generations in Ma'anshan, Huanggang. It is said that Fu Xiaozhen's father, Fu Yuqing Xuezheng, once worked as an education official in Fujian, and also returned to his hometown to participate in the compilation of "Huangzhou Fuzhi".Fu Xiaozhen is good at poetry and prose, good at medicine, and his family is relatively well off.He admired Xiong Shili's intelligence more, and knew that Xiong had participated in the revolution and was wanted.Xiong Shili's wife, Jiguang, has one elder sister and two younger brothers. The elder sister Fu Zigong is the wife of Wang Jianpan (Meng Su), the president of the Hubei Provincial Bank. In October 1915, Xiong Shili's eldest daughter, Youguang, was born.

Xiong Shili once recorded in his works that in the sixth year of the Republic of China, he went to Jingxiang from Wuchang to participate in the defense of independence. He was defeated, moved to the army, and entered Guangdong in seven years. One day while taking a nap, he suddenly dreamed that his fifth younger brother Jigang was dead on the bed. He couldn't help weeping bitterly as he stroked the body. When he woke up, the tears were still wet. After leaving the army and returning home, I realized that my fifth brother had indeed passed away.He believes that dreams are omens of rest and blame, and cannot be explained with abnormal psychology.

Xu Fuguan, a disciple of Xiong Shili, described it this way: "Mr. Xiong was poor to death when he was young. In a certain Shanzhai teaching Mongolian hall, he had no trousers to change, only a pair of trousers. After washing at night, he hung them on the head of the Bodhisattva, dried them and then wore them. , I only have one pair of trousers for many years, sometimes I don’t have to change it, so I wear a long shirt with bare legs, so people nicknamed it ‘Kong Kong Taoist’.” Xiong Shili was not taken seriously at the Nanjing Inner College at first. Later, Master Ouyang Jingwu heard that Mr. Cai Yuanpei had written a preface for his book, so he asked him to read the manuscript.Xiong Shili asked Mr. Ouyang to read his Buddhist study notes, and Mr. Ouyang looked at him with admiration after reading it.

Xiong Shili loves to eat meat, and Mr. Liang Shuming, who is a vegetarian, said helplessly: "Mr. Xiong can eat a chicken for a meal!" When friends and disciples come to visit him, they usually have to buy chicken and meat for him.Xiong Zeng said that he had suffered from encephalopathy for ten years, with a falling stomach, frequent marrow leakage, and a weak back. Because he pays attention to nutrition and eats chicken, he was ridiculed by some Buddhists as "Wild Fox Zen". From 1926 to 1927, Liang Shuming rented several bungalows in Dayouzhuang, a western suburb of Beijing, and lived with Xiong Shili and a dozen young students. At that time, neither Liang nor Xiong had a fixed income, and relied on the fees for publishing articles and books to maintain a simple life for more than a dozen people. Basically, everyone followed Liang as a vegetarian, but Xiong Shili loved meat, and his student Bo Pengshan took care of the meals. One day, Xiong Shili asked Bo, "How much meat did you buy for me?" After two or three days, Xiong Shili asked again: "How much meat did you buy for me today?" as a joke.

In 1934, Xiong Shili lived in Xu Fuguan's home. The Xu family has a young girl, Junqin, who is just 3 years old and is quite cute.Xiong Shili asked her: "Do you like me living in your house?" This little girl must be promising. Xiong Shili eats soft-shelled turtles and likes to be quiet. He was once hired by Fudan University in Shanghai, and the request was that he only contact professors and not students. He must prepare a soft-shelled turtle with every meal. Xiong Shili refused to give speeches all his life, because he thought that if he talked too much, he would easily lose his temper, which would damage his nerves and talk nonsense. He writes and thinks every day, and he must do it when the weather is good and there are no people.

Xiong Shili's personality is quite similar to that of Ji Kang, and he never returns to visit dignitaries. In Chongqing City, Guo Moruo heard that Xiong Shili liked to eat chicken, so he tied two chickens on a sliding pole to see him. Afterwards, the two corresponded and discussed the pre-Qin scholars and traditional Chinese culture. , patriotic lectures, and leaders of the community.” At this time, Guo also introduced Comrade Zhou Enlai to Mr. Xiong, and his letter said, “Mr. Zhou Enlai, a loyal elder”, he would like to visit Mr.The friendship formed between Mr. Xiong and Guo Moruo has been maintained since the liberation of the whole country.

Xiong Shili has a self-written couplet in his apartment in Beiping: "Tao will be abolished, and the text does not care."Student Hu Shihua saw it and wanted it, so Xiong Shili gave it to him. When Xiong Shili sent the couplet, he wrote on it, "I hang this couplet on my seat, and Shihua will ask for it when he sees it." Xiong Shili had no savings in his life, and sometimes relied on the support of relatives and friends. During the Anti-Japanese War, it was very difficult for several years.Xiong Shili told his students that whenever they went to visit him, he would stay and stay with him.The students brought some gifts to the teacher, such as bringing a chicken or some medicine, Xiong was not polite, and accepted it generously, and got along like a family. But there are mistakes in learning, Xiong Shili pointed out bluntly.Never say perfunctory, polite words. He answered every question, and even answered ten questions.Ren Jiyu said: "With Mr. Xiong, people have the feeling of going away from the void and returning from the reality. Being with Mr. Xiong is like being close to a pot of fire, scorching people, and leaving it makes people miss it unforgettable."

After the liberation of the whole country, Xiong Shili took in a adopted daughter in Beijing, named him "Zhongguang", and took the same rank as his own daughter Youguang and Zaiguang.Zhongguang Xijing, loves to read Buddhist books, helps Mr. Xiong with housework, and copies manuscripts. Xiong Shili rarely spends his life with his wife, and his children do not study philosophy. Xiong lived independently in Beijing and Sichuan. In his later years, he had a daughter as a disciple. , He was very satisfied to listen to his lectures again. He said, "Fu Nu preaches the scriptures, class women receive history, and Pang Nu preaches." Now Zhongguang has gained another person who can preach.

Xiong Shili's adopted daughter, Zhong Guang, was introduced to have learned painting from Qi Baishi and became one of the female disciples of the old man Baishi. One day Mr. Qi suddenly proposed to interview Mr. Xiong. The master of traditional Chinese painting and the master of philosophy hit it off, and never met each other.Xiong Shili's calligraphy is rarely praised, but Qi Baishi alone thinks it is wonderful.Xiong once wrote an article to celebrate his birthday.Qi Baishi admired his literary talent very much, and once asked Xiong to write a memorial service for Qi's mother. For this reason, Qi Baishi also gave Xiong a Chinese painting entitled "Old and Young Cows".Qi Zishi once said to people that Xiong Shili is my best friend.

In Beijing in the winter of 1963, Xiong Shili wrote a letter to Xiong Zhongguang on a fan: "The human heart is inherently happy, and selfish desires are bound. When selfish desires are overshadowed, conscience is still conscious. Once awakened, it is eliminated, and the human heart is still happy." Wang Yuanhua said that when Xiong Shili decided whether to associate with someone, he had to meet him first. The first time he visited, Mr. Xiong held his face and looked at him for a long time, feeling very uneasy.Fortunately, after reading it, Mr. Xiong said that he can go often in the future.

Xiong Shili seemed afraid of guilt. When talking about his wife, he pointed to his wife in a low voice and said, "This old lady!" The eldest son-in-law of Mr. Xiong Shili said that when he lived in Laohankou, Mr. Xiong asked him to send letters. Letters by water should be put in the mailbox by the river, and letters by land should be dropped near Dazhimen Railway Station. I put it in the mailbox, saying that the letter will arrive faster if it is posted in this way. Xiong Shili and Dong Biwu are fellow villagers from Hubei and old comrades of 1911. They are about the same age and get along well. After liberation, Xiong Shili would always look for him if he had anything to do, so Dong joked with him, "I've almost become your vice chairman, Xiong Shili!" Xiong Shili's eldest daughter, Youguang, once asked Dong Biwu for a letter.Soon, Dong Laoshu presented a banner: "It is better to be clumsy than to be clever, to be ugly rather than to be flattering, to be branched rather than slippery, to be rough than to be arranged. This is Fu Qing's master calligraphy. Ten strengths, my brother's orthography. Brother Dong Biwu October 1962."
