Home Categories Biographical memories Talking about Great Literati in the Republic of China: Those Masters of Thought
Yin Haiguang recalled his teacher Jin Yuelin in this way: When I was studying at Southwest Associated University in Kunming, in a quiet evening, I took a walk with my teacher, Mr. Jin Yuelin. At that time, all kinds of propaganda were making a lot of noise.I asked Mr. Jin which faction is the truth. He did not specifically answer this question. After pondering for a while, he said that anything that belongs to the so-called spirit of the times and excites people of an era may not be reliable or lasting.I then asked him what would be a more durable and reliable thought. He said that after a long period of hard work, things came out of his mind, for example, the thoughts of Hume, Kant, Russell and others.

In 1922, Jin Yuelin, who was still studying abroad, published a long article "Excellent Elements and Today's Society" in China. In the article, he first hopes that intellectuals can become "independent income earners". "My income from running a shaving shop is much more independent than that of the Secretary of the Ministry of Communications, so instead of being an official, it is better to open a shaving shop than work in the ministry. It’s better to sing at the fruit stand than to flatter a horse in the house.” Second, I hope that intellectuals will not be officials, that is, “not be politicians, and not regard being an official as a profession...to live their own lives independently.”

Jin Yuelin said in "Mourning Shen Xingren" that Shen Xingren was very afraid of people, and then said, "I am also afraid of people, and I don't think much of animals like humans. I always feel that the evolution of the world to the emergence of humans, no matter in terms of direction or results, is always Can’t say I’m very satisfied.” Jin Yuelin said: "As far as I am concerned, I am a person who can think quite finely in abstraction but is 100% rough in emotion between people. In behavior, it is inevitable that I do not understand the rules, do not abide by the rules, disregard human feelings, and are not used to accidents. Therefore, on the road of life, it is unavoidable to rush and crash for a while. People who do not sympathize with me will inevitably find me troublesome, even annoying. People who sympathize with me will inevitably have a kind of mentality to protect me at any time."

Jin Yuelin recalled the matter of persuading Wu Mi, he said: "Now I feel that my words are indeed inappropriate. During my dealings with Zhang Xiruo, he criticized me in person several times, saying that my words were neither fish nor fowl. I ignored it. Now it seems that he Criticizing my situation is just like my conversation with Mr. Wu. Talking about love and going to the toilet together, although it is a private matter, is indeed neither fish nor fowl. It seems beneficial to recall. If I don’t recall, I will not find the above mistake." Jin Yuelin said: "For politics, I am a 'dialectical contradiction'. I am a party member, but I am a bad party member; I am a member of the Democratic League, but I am a bad member; I am a member of the Political Consultative Conference The commissioner, however, is a bad one. On the one hand, I have no interest in politics, and on the other hand, I am very interested in politics."
