Wen Yiduo entered a private school at the age of six. He was an adult and studied all day long. His elder brother Wen Zhanmin recalled: "When you first became a foreign teacher, the group competed and played, and you were alone." Every New Year, dragon lanterns or bridal sedan chairs came outside the door, and other children ran out to watch the fun, and he was the only one who sat in the study , unmoved. In the evening, Wen often read "Han Shu" with his father.Once, he made an analogy between Mr. Tiantian's lecture and the Hanshu. His father was very happy after hearing it, and he would tell him the famous quotes in the book every night.

In the summer of 1912, 14-year-old Wen Yiduo (whose name was Wen Yiduo at the time) applied for the Tsinghua School. The topic of the composition for the first test was "Much Wen Que Yi", which happened to be Wen's name.He had read many articles by Liang Qichao, learned to write one, and was appreciated by the chief examiner, but because of his average grades in other subjects, he was only admitted as the first candidate. On the way to Beijing for the re-examination, he temporarily memorized some useful English idioms, and was admitted to Tsinghua University with the first place.

Wen Yiduo studied at Tsinghua University for ten years. Every summer when he came home, he would always study behind closed doors, forgetting to eat and sleep.Whenever there are guests at home, he always pulls his shoes and hides, muttering: "Why are you here to disturb people's reading again!" Books and manuscript paper.Wen Yiduo's study was named "Er Yue Lu".In the midsummer season, the heat was unbearable, the study room was like a steamer, and the sweat was pouring down like rain, and the "Er Yue Hut" became a "Er Yue Furnace", but he still couldn't stop reading.

One evening, a centipede crawled onto the feet of Wen Yiduo, who was studying. His family exclaimed when they saw it, but Wen was in a daze. They had to help him drive the centipede away, but Wen blamed his family for disturbing his study. Therefore, his family members called him a "bookworm" and blamed him for "not doing common things", but he said that he was "not confused about big things". In the summer of 1928, Wen Yiduo went to Wuhan University to teach.Since then, he has transformed from a poet to a scholar, and began to devote himself to the study of ancient Chinese literature. He started from Tang poetry, and then traced back, from the poems of the Han, Wei and Six Dynasties to "Chu Ci", and then "Zhouyi", from ancient mythology to prehistoric literature. At the same time, he also made amazing efforts in paleography, phonology, and folklore. The breadth of research, the depth of research, and the abundance of achievements made even Guo Moruo marvel that "not only has there been no one before, but I am afraid there will be no one to come after."

After coming to Tsinghua University to teach, Wen Yiduo devoted himself more to his studies and achieved a lot.Sometimes, he "suddenly realizes something" and "has never made a reply since the ages", and he can't wait to "compete and wow" with others immediately. Wen Yiduo once wanted to compile a "Mao Poetry Dictionary". He planned to let each student choose a word from among them, and then collect all the sentences with this word in each article, divide them into several categories according to the syntactic structure, and then classify them according to the tone and harmony. Seek meaning from two aspects of form, and pay attention to the usage and meaning of ancient function words. But the Marco Polo Bridge Incident aborted this plan.

Most people in the world think that in "The Book of Songs·Beifeng·Xintai" "Swallows and wans ask for it, and the scorpion will not die. When the fishnet is set up, Hong will leave it. Yanwan's request will be given by this." The "hong" is "Honghu "The "Hong".After textual research, Wen Yiduo believes that the "hong" here should mean "toad", so that the meaning of the whole poem can be explained. According to Wen Yiduo's textual research, the "wind" in "the wind is irrelevant to the cow and the horse" means mating. He believes that the wind poems in the book are love poems, and the ancient meaning of "wind" comes from worms, and "worms" are the "虺" in "Book of Books·Zhong虺zhigao", that is, snakes. It is recorded in "Lunheng" and "New Preface" that when Sun Shuao saw two snakes, he actually saw the two snakes copulating, which is the original meaning of "虺".Therefore, "wind, cattle and horses are not related" means that horses and cattle are not of the same kind, and they cannot "wind", that is, they cannot mate.Words such as fengliu, fengyun, fengyue, and coquettish in later generations are all related to the love of opposite sexes.

Scholars all believe that it is "sorrow without complaint, joy without lewdness", but Wen Yiduo's textual research one by one, believes that there are not only indecent poems in it, but some are simply obscene poems. For example, in "Chen Feng·Hengmen", the "hungry" in the sentence "You can enjoy the hunger" refers to the meaning of intercourse between men and women; Refers to intercourse.Wen Yiduo also cites ancient books such as "Han Shu" and "Chu Ci" as mutual references. Some Mr. Wei Dao, who claimed to be a Confucian scholar, said angrily: "Wen Yiduo speaks the right way, quack school!"

Wen Yiduo said in the article "Poems and Songs" that primitive people initially uttered sounds such as "ah", "oh", "ah", "woo hoo" and "hee hee" due to emotional agitation. These sounds are "songs". The origin of "poetry" is to express emotions; while "poetry" was originally used to teach Zhi, "zhi" has three meanings: memory, record and nostalgia, which are also three important stages in the development of poetry, and the essence of poetry is to record things. He believes that the three hundred articles have two sources, songs and poems, and the so-called poems at that time were essentially history.

Wen Yiduo once conducted a textual research on the dragon, and believed that the dragon is a fusion of the totems of various tribes in ancient times.According to Wen's textual research, several major Chinese and Yidi ethnic groups in ancient times all worshiped the dragon totem, thus proving the homology of the various ethnic groups in China. Mrs. Gao Zhen recalled that Wen Yiduo sometimes fell asleep in the middle of the night, and suddenly sat up, and his wife hurriedly asked, "What are you doing?" He said, "I remembered! I remembered how to verify that word." Since arriving in Mengzi, Wen Yiduo has been immersed in the research of ancient cultural classics.Zheng Tianting recalled: "Mr. Wen and I are neighbors. Mr. Wen is very hardworking and doesn't go out except for class. We go for a walk after dinner, but Mr. Wen never goes. I advised him why not go downstairs. Everyone laughed. , so it became an allusion of Mr. Wen, a nickname - "Why don't you look at the master of the building", just like the ancients did not peep into the garden, it is to describe his specialization in reading." Later, Luo Changpei talked about this in an academic lecture Anecdotally, the nickname "Why don't you go to the host of the building" spread throughout the campus.
