Chapter 52 8. Thanks to the press and the general public for their sympathy and support

Comrade Mao Zedong explained in his book "On the Correct Handling of Contradictions among the People" an important policy for rehabilitating erroneous cases, "Whoever was wrong in the first place should be declared rehabilitated within the same scope."The party and the government have implemented this policy for a long time. In 1957, the wrongful case that I was classified as a "rightist" was published in newspapers all over the country.But when my misclassification as a rightist was corrected, I asked to announce the "review conclusion" in the newspaper, but the relevant authorities refused to approve it.They even refused to publish the reports that journalists wrote about interviewing me.Their practice of not acting in accordance with policies has increased the political pressure on me.As a last resort, I wrote a letter of appeal to the Central Propaganda Department, requesting that the conclusion of my wrongful conviction be published in the newspaper.A deputy minister of the Ministry wrote back: According to the party's policy, the conclusion of your wrongful conviction should be published in the newspaper.The relevant authorities do not allow it to be published in newspapers. You can write your own articles according to the rights entrusted to you by the Constitution, and the newspapers will publish them for you.So I contacted several newspapers, and they welcomed my manuscript.

On December 7, 1982, Beijing's "Guangming Daily" published a rough draft "Recalling the "1.2.9" Revolutionary Students' Patriotic Movement". On December 15, the "People's Daily" published a rough draft "The New Constitution Affirms the Status and Role of Intellectuals". On December 18, "Guangming Daily" headlined "Comrade Ge Peiqi's misclassification as a rightist has been corrected" and told readers the main content of the "review conclusion" made by the relevant units. On December 19, Guangzhou's "Yangcheng Evening News" published "Two Interviews with Ge Peiqi" written by Comrade Shi Wan.Hong Kong "Wen Wei Po" republished the full text of this interview.Many provincial and municipal newspapers and local newspapers also published the main content of this interview.As a result, readers have paid more attention to me, and I have received nearly a thousand enthusiastic letters from the people.Some people even came to visit me from Tianjin, Shanghai, Changsha, Harbin, Hohhot and other places.I am extremely grateful for the sympathy and support from comrades in the press, friends and the general public!

Since I participated in the "December 9th" patriotic student movement, comrades and friends in the press gave me some care and encouragement around the 50th anniversary of the "December 9th" movement in 1985. In May 1985, Beijing's "China Youth" magazine published "A Life Made of Pain and Smiles - Interview with Ge Peiqi" written by Comrade Qing Ma. In June of the same year, Shanghai "Wenhui Monthly" published "Tears of Hate - The Biography of Ge Peiqi" written by Comrade Ye Yonglie.Some newspapers have published a summary of the content of this interview.

On September 9, "Fuyang Daily" in Anhui Province published "Ge Peiqi in Jieshou" written by Comrade Wang Tianxiang. On December 9, the "Beijing Evening News" published Comrade Wang Xiaoyang's "Reviewing the Past and Recalling the Past" by visiting Ge Peiqi, one of the leaders of Peking University students during the "December 9" Movement. On December 14, "Renmin University of China" published "The Communist Party of China Leads China on a Bright Road—Interview with Comrade Ge Peiqi, a "December 9" Veteran" written by Comrade Zhou Jianming.
