Chapter 1 foreword

In a sense, international competition in the 21st century is neither a company nor a country, but a city circle with its own characteristics. Without the formation and rise of urban circles, without the backing of developed big cities, without the concentration of population and industries, and the high degree of urban civilization, there is no doubt that this is a country that is difficult to gain competitiveness in the international market. Only highly modernized metropolises have the perfect infrastructure needed for division of labor and exchanges with the world; only highly modernized metropolises can have sufficient industrial agglomeration and economic scale to participate in global competition.

Dazzling Wind: The Development History of China's Star Cities tells the story of the growth of China's emerging cities since the reform and opening up, and extends our deep thinking about urban issues—— How to build a low-cost and high-efficiency city? How to absorb more rural people who have already entered the industrial production and service industries? How do those cities with a certain scale realize this industrial adjustment and social demographic adjustment? Why is the special role of elites inseparable from the rise of modern metropolises? What does China's wave after wave of city-building movements mean?

The author uses the method of "country narration" to describe the history of changes in the nine fastest-growing star cities in China: Suzhou, Chongqing, Kunshan, Sanya, Dongguan, Changshu, Zhongshan, Yiwu, and Zhangjiagang.
