Chapter 48 June 6 became an "eventful day"

Anti-Rightists 叶永烈 1683Words 2018-03-14
Mao Zedong chose June 8 as the day to launch a general counter-offensive against the rightists. In addition to Lu Yuwen's anonymous letter published at the meeting on June 6, and two other events that occurred on June 6, Mao Zedong felt the situation was serious. Urgency—June 6 was an eventful day. Just on June 6, Mao Zedong issued a comment on the "Brief Briefing on Rectification in Colleges and Universities" on June 4: This briefing was specially submitted to Mao Zedong by Lu Dingyi on June 5.Lu Dingyi also wrote a letter to Mao Zedong for this. After Mao Zedong read it, he wrote this instruction in Lu Dingyi's letter.

The bulletin reflected that a student at Peking University wrote an article entitled "My Concerns and Appeals". After the mimeograph was distributed, it had a great influence on the students. The article stated that the Party Central Committee has begun to split, and Chairman Mao's policy of "singing" and "letting go" has been opposed by 90% of the party and conservative forces in the party. Some people want to force Chairman Mao to step down. Mao Zedong naturally paid attention to the trends reflected in this briefing, and stepped up his deployment to fight back against the rightists.

It was also on June 6th that the "June 66 Incident" occurred. Please don't get me wrong, this "666" is not a pesticide, but "June 6, Zhang Bojun held a meeting of six professors in Beijing". The "six professors" are Zeng Zhaolun, Qian Weichang, Fei Xiaotong, Tao Dayong, Wu Jingchao, and Huang Yaomian. In addition, Ye Duyi, Director of the General Office of the Democratic League, Shi Liang, Hu Yuzhi (withdrew midway), Jin Ruonian and Min Ganghou were also invited. The "six professors meeting" was urgently held by Zhang Bojun at the Cultural Club of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in Nanheyan, Beijing at ten o'clock in the morning on June 6.

Later, according to Zhang Bojun’s forced confession in Guangming Daily on July 4, 1957: On the afternoon of June 5, Professors Zeng Zhaolun, Qian Weichang, and Fei Xiaotong came to his home, It is said that the students in the university are making trouble.Qian Weichang said that the situation at Tsinghua University is very serious. What should they do with the NLD? Therefore, Zhang Bojun held the "six professors meeting" the next day. The participant of the meeting, Min Ganghou, a member of the Central Standing Committee of the Democratic League, later published an "exposing" article "An Emergency Meeting Called by Zhang Bojun" in the "People's Daily" on July 4, 1957.

Min Ganghou "revealed": At the beginning of the meeting, Zhang Bojun said: "The situation in the school is very serious now. Please study and consider how the NLD should work in the movement." Zeng Zhaolun said: "Students have a lot of problems today, and they are on the verge of breaking out. As soon as they take to the streets, the citizens will unite and the problems will become bigger. Because the masses are also dissatisfied with the party today. Don't look at scholars who failed to rebel for three years, or Chinese intellectuals who made troubles." There is a tradition, from the imperial students of the Han Dynasty to the May Fourth Movement, it was all caused by students."

Qian Weichang said: "The characteristic of the current student movement is to find a leader. If there is a teacher leading the way, there will be trouble." Fei Xiaotong said: "Of course it's easy to recruit, three million troops can be recruited, but if the hearts of the people are gone, the party's prestige among the masses will be gone." Zhang Bojun said: "There are two people after Lenin's death. One is Yugoslavia's Tito who became the opposition, and the other is China's Mao Gong who inherited Leninism. This rectification movement requires people from outside the party to provide opinions. It was estimated. The democratic parties are always polite in giving their opinions, but they were underestimated; they did not expect the party to make so many mistakes, and the problems now greatly exceed the estimates. You have to be at a loss, you can’t close it, you can’t let it go.”

As we all know, the "revealing" materials in 1957 have very poor credibility and a high degree of distortion, even though they were published in the "People's Daily" in a grand manner. This "reveal" quickly spread to Mao Zedong's ears through internal channels on June 6, prompting Mao Zedong to overestimate the situation.Wrong intelligence leads to wrong judgments; wrong judgments lead to wrong decisions. Just on June 6, Mao Zedong personally drafted the "Central Instructions on Intensifying the Rectification Movement" and made deployments for countering the rightists.

This instruction was sent to the "Shanghai Bureau, provincial and municipal committees, and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Party Committee." Mao Zedong clearly issued instructions to prepare to fight back against the rightists, calling this an "ideological war" and "political war": "Attention must be paid to winning over the center and uniting the left so that when the time is right, they can be mobilized to fight back against the right and reactionaries. This is a large-scale ideological and political war, and we must win it, and we are fully qualified to win it. Within the party It is a very good thing that some right-leaning elements in the regiment defected, so don't regret it."

Mao Zedong also called for a "queue" for the left, center and right: "The situation in Beijing proves that a large number of reactionary and erroneous ideas have been exposed in various democratic parties, institutions of higher learning and many institutions. The reactionary elements are only one percent, and more than ninety percent are centrists and leftists. Please pay attention to the The number of people in your unit should be lined up according to the left, middle and right standards during the exercise, so that you know what you are doing.” That is to say, the counterattack has not yet begun, and the left, center and right have been drawn in advance!Once the order for the general attack is given, just fire at the intended rightist target!

In this instruction, Mao Zedong issued a notice: "Comrade Mao Zedong's two speeches at the Supreme State Council on February 27 and at the Propaganda Conference in March (quote's note: the former refers to "On the Correct Handling of Contradictions among the People") will be prepared around June 15 published in the newspaper."
