After the battle of Zhiluo Town and the settlement of Liu Zhidan's case, the situation in the Soviet area was initially consolidated. Mao Zedong gave speeches everywhere, explaining the significance of victory in the Zhiluo Town Battle and encouraging fighting spirit. On the other hand, he called on the Red Army to make persistent efforts and make full use of every hour and every square mile that has been obtained to prepare for a new "encirclement and suppression" attack. Having said that, in the bottom of his heart, Mao Zedong was thinking about another more important issue, that is, the issue of changing the party line.

Just when the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China arrived in northern Shaanxi, the national peril became more serious. In addition to continuing to intensify their aggression against the Northeast, the aggressive Japanese invaders extended their claws to North China. The slogan of "specializing North China" gradually turned North China into its exclusive colony. However, under the pressure of the Japanese aggressors, the Kuomintang authorities adopted a policy of retreating step by step, with the purpose of "safety at home first, and then foreign affairs."Mao Zedong thought: The Communist Party of China is a political party that seeks happiness for the people. Naturally, it cannot sit idly by while the Japanese invaders invade China and enslave the Chinese people. In addition, when the national enemy invaded and the vast majority of Chinese people did not want to be subjugated slaves, whoever held high the banner of resisting Japan and saving the country would win the hearts of the people and thus win China.Because of this, during the Long March, we kept shouting the slogan of "going north to resist Japan". Now that we have set up camp in northern Shaanxi, we should hold high the banner of resistance against Japan, call for class struggle to be subordinate to national war, and drive the Japanese devils out of China.

However, in the face of a powerful national enemy, the weak Red Army alone is far from enough. Only by uniting all forces that can be united and forming the broadest national anti-Japanese united front can the enemy be defeated. Therefore, Mao Zedong and others began to study objects that could be united. As soon as the Central Red Army arrived in northern Shaanxi, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China issued the "Secret Instruction Letter for the Present Anti-Japanese and Against Chiang", emphasizing that the anti-Japanese national united front must not only have a lower-level united front, but also an upper-level united front. All anti-Japanese and anti-Chiang groups and Individuals are objects of union.

On August 1, 1935, the CCP delegation to the Comintern issued the "Message to All Compatriots for Resisting Japan and Saving the Nation", calling on all compatriots in all parties and factions across the country to "should have the sincere awareness of 'brothers fight outside the wall to resist their insults' ", "Stop the civil war in order to concentrate all national power (manpower, material resources, financial resources, military force, etc.) to fight for the sacred cause of resisting Japan and saving the nation." On December 17, Mao Zedong had only lived in Wayaobao, the temporary "capital" of the red regime for four days. It can be said that the dust had not been washed away, so he presided over an enlarged meeting of the Politburo to discuss the issue of changing the party line. This is the famous "Wayaobao Meeting".

In northern Shaanxi in December, it is already the middle of winter, and the loess is sandwiched by the howling wind, making it extremely cold. However, the comrades who gathered in Zhang Wentian's cave to attend the enlarged meeting of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee did not feel the cold of the severe winter at all, and they were all extremely excited, and sometimes they even got red-faced when they argued over an issue. Indeed, to turn someone whom one has always considered an enemy into a friend, there is a problem of changing one's mind from theory to emotion. Mao Zedong believed that for the overall interests of the Chinese nation and the long-term interests of the Communist Party and the Red Army, the decision to establish the anti-Japanese national united front was the only decision that every member of the Communist Party must accept even if they could not accept it under the current circumstances.

In order to encourage everyone to change their understanding and accept it emotionally, Mao Zedong and his supporters worked hard to talk about the situation, tasks, strategies, and when necessary, struggle. In response to Bogu and others who quoted classics to promote the attitude of "the middle forces are the most dangerous enemy", Mao Zedong said angrily: You always look for evidence from Marx. Am I not loyal and filial to my ancestors! The closed-door doctrine "drives fish out of the abyss and sparrows out of clumps", driving "thousands of thousands" and "mighty" to the enemy's side, only winning the applause of the enemy. The strategy of closed-doorism is a strategy of solitude.

Mao Zedong's correct proposition was supported by most of the participating comrades including Zhang Wentian and Zhou Enlai. On December 25, the meeting passed the "Resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on the Current Political Situation and the Party's Tasks" drafted by Zhang Wentian. On the 27th, Mao Zedong made a report "On the Strategy of Opposing Japanese Imperialism" at the party's activist meeting according to the spirit of the meeting. These two documents scientifically used the method of Marxist-Leninist class analysis to demonstrate the necessity and possibility of establishing the anti-Japanese national united front under the current situation, and established the correct political line.
