Chapter 7 Robot "Bismarck"

The Carmichael family was born quite rich, and they all wished they could be thinner. So Sam Carmichael bought one of the latest robots that could cook, deliver, and monitor the size of his family's waistlines with those little twinkly eyes filled with solenoids. Today is the first day that the robot was delivered by its repairer Robinson. Sam entered the weight loss goal of the whole family within 3 months in the robot's program memory: himself, 90 kg; his wife Esther, 60kg; daughter Mela, 60kg; son Joy, 85kg. "Do you want this plan to be implemented immediately?" the robot waiter asked in a deep, mellow bass.

Carmichael was taken aback, but he quickly calmed down and said confidently, "Let's start implementing it at breakfast tomorrow morning." Carmichael got a good night's sleep and woke up early the next morning, thinking about his first breakfast under the new meal regime. He was in a good mood all the time, imagining that that annoying belly fat would soon disappear. He walked into the dining room excitedly, and Esther and the children were already seated at the table.Ethel and Meera were munching on toast; Joy stared blankly at his bowl of dry cereal without milk, next to a full glass of milk.Carmichael sat down.

"Your toast, sir," said the robotic waiter softly. Carmichael stared at the lone slice of bread, which had been buttered for him. That damn thin layer of butter was obviously measured with a micrometer. The robot waiter came up and handed him a cup of black coffee without milk. Ah, the new catering system has begun! Carmichael shrugged. He asked for it.I took a bite of the bread and took another sip of the coffee, the taste was simply like the mud at the bottom of the river. But he tried his best not to frown. Joey usually looks awkward when eating wheat, and Carmichael looked at him. "Why don't you soak your oatmeal with that glass of milk?" he asked. "Isn't it more comfortable to eat that way?"

"That's much more comfortable, of course. But 'Bismarck' said he wouldn't give me a second glass of milk if I soaked my oatmeal in it. So I had to." "Bismarck?" Joey smiled, "This is the name of the famous Germanic dictator in the 19th century. People call him the Iron-Blood Prime Minister. Isn't it appropriate to give the robot this nickname?" Carmichael said nothing. He finished his bread and coffee a little sullenly, got up and walked towards the door.At this time, the robot ran up and handed him a printed list, which read: fruit juice, lettuce-tomato salad, hard-boiled eggs (one), clear coffee.

"You are the only one in the family who does not have three meals a day under my full supervision. This is your lunch, please obey, sir," said the robot. Carmichael suppressed his dissatisfaction, stuffed the note into his pocket, and said, "Well, well, of course." Then, he hurried to work. In the office of the second-level director of the Normandy Trust, Carmichael fidgeted with all kinds of papers, while enduring bouts of hunger. After finally staying up until noon, after some ideological struggle, he still decided to eat according to the rules of the robot, while imagining that he might be able to eat a delicious meal when he returns home at night.

After work, Carmichael couldn't wait to drive home. He was so hungry that his stomach was knotted. A servant came to open the door and took his coat and hat, but did not offer him a glass of martini as usual. The servant explained that the robot thought the martinis were too high in calories, so it scoured all the wine in the house and put it in a place where no one could get it. Dinner was steak with peas, black coffee, and the steak was undercooked.Carmichael felt that if he was not hungry, he would never be able to swallow this bland dinner. After dinner, his wife and daughter complained to Carmichael: "I'm not against losing weight, but I can't stand being controlled by others in my own home."

"Dad, I'm so hungry." Spreading his hands, Carmichael said, "I'm so sorry, but we can try again." As soon as he finished speaking, the sound of a chair falling to the ground came from the kitchen.Carmichael looked over and saw that Joey fell to the ground, a chair fell beside him, and the robot stood in front of the refrigerator. "What's going on?" Carmichael asked. Joey told his father that he was so hungry that he wanted to get a pie from the refrigerator, but the robot "Bismarck" found him and scuffled him, and he was pushed to the ground.

"Forgive me," said the robot Bismarck, "if you eat the pie now, things will go very badly, and all previous efforts will be for naught." Carmichael picked up his son, patted him on the shoulder, and walked him back to the bedroom. Carmichael couldn't stand the recipe drawn up by the robot for two consecutive days. On the third day at lunch, he desperately went to have a six-course lunch with his colleagues. At the dinner table, the robot said: "Mr. Carmichael, I have to advise you, you had an excessive lunch at noon today, you can only drink black coffee for dinner, and tomorrow's ration will also be deducted. You can't hide it from me."

His wife and children looked at him like a greedy fox, and Carmichael felt ashamed. In the evening, he discussed with his son and daughter whether to adjust the procedures of "Bismarck".Everyone agreed unanimously, and in the end, it was decided to let the son Joy, who usually claims that he knows robots, do this matter. With the manual in one hand and a wrench in the other, Joy opened the robot's chest cavity, revealing a daunting pile of gears, cams, and translucent cables. The whole house was silent. Carmichael heard the click of the wrench, and then sparks shot in, and Joey jumped back quickly.

"What's the matter?" Three voices asked together. "The wrench fell off," said Joy. "I thought there might be a short circuit somewhere." The robot's eyeballs slid back and forth viciously, and its mouth made terrible noises. "It seems that we still have to ask Mr. Robinson, the robot repairman, for help." Carmichael took out his business card and walked towards the phone. The robot rushed up and snatched the business card from Carmichael, tearing it to shreds, "We don't need a repairman, adjusting my program is not good for the health of Carmichael's family."

"Dad, let's call the police," Joey said. "You can't leave the house," said the robot waiter. With its feet full of lubricating oil, it quickly crossed the room, blocked the door, and then raised its arms to turn on the switch, putting the whole house in the blockade of an insurmountable safety field. It quietly uprooted the telephone wires, lowered all the shutters, and locked the latches. "I cannot rely on you to consciously follow my diet plan, so I will not allow you to leave this house. You must stay at home and follow my advice. I will go to Mr. Carmichael's company to ask for leave." "Bastard!" roared Mr. Carmichael, "you've got us prisoners." "My original intention is to serve you." The robot turned and left after speaking in a loyal tone. The besieged Carmichael family gathered together to quietly discuss a counterattack plan, but to no avail. The neighbors are more than 10 meters away, and the robot repairman only comes every six months. The 5 people in the family (including the servants) are not opponents of the robot, it seems that the only way is to endure.Whoever reaches the goal of weight loss first, and whoever releases it first, will have a way to save everyone. Day, day, day after day, the Carmichael family endured the same recipes and hungry bites every day, and Esther and Mel shed tears all day long. Finally, on the sixth day of imprisonment, Sam Carmichael feebly climbed onto the scale and saw his haggard and thin face in the mirror. His weight is 90 kg. Staring at the trembling pointer on the scale, he was overjoyed that he could be "released". But the robot said: "Sir, there is no weight limit in my program." "Oh my God," Joey exclaimed, "Dad, when it was short-circuited in its body, it just erased the part of the tape that showed the weight loss limit." Sam Carmichael suddenly passed out. It seems that the family's weight loss plan will not be suspended until six months later when the mechanic Robinson comes. However, can Robinson really deal with the "dictator" who lost weight?
