If you want to be like this again, I'll hold a press conference right away?" 道吉尔博士一面抹汗，一面连声道：“葛陵太大，你别着急，由于某种需要绝对保密的理由，葛陵少校不能见任何人，我们会尽快结束这种情形。” 葛陵太太──那个金发美人，自然是葛陵少校的妻子桃丽：“好，我给你二十四小时。” 看博士的神情，像是还想讨价还价一番，可是桃丽一说完，就转身向外走，当她看到我们时，现出几分奇怪的神情来，然后，向梁若水一笑：“小姐，你真漂亮。” 梁若水回答了一句：“你才漂亮。” 桃丽走了出去，博士向我们走来，我压低了声音：“博士，梁医生是精神病医生，让我们先去看看葛陵少校，别的事再说。” 博士长叹了一声，带着我们，乘搭电梯，来到了建筑物的顶层，经过了一个曲折的走廊，来到了一间有两个守卫的门前，推开门，里面是一个客厅，有两个中年人正在谈话。博士道：“这是我们的精神病医生，葛陵少校的神经很不正常。” 梁若水镇定地道：“我们可以解释他神经不正常的原因，但不知能否使他回复正常。” 在里面的两个医生，一起用不信任的眼光，向梁若水望来，博士去敲一扇门，敲了两下，就推开了门，里面是一间卧室。 向内看去，看到一个体型高大、相貌英俊的男人，坐在床沿。博士叫了一声：“葛陵少校。” 葛陵少校和他的妻子，是十分标准的一对。可是这时，神俊高大的葛陵少校，神情却有点呆滞，博士一叫他，他抬起头来，口唇颤动着，喃喃说了一句话，这句话，所有听到的人，全部听不懂。 他像是也感到了我们没有听明白他的那句话，又提高了声音，说了一遍。 他的话，仍然没有人听得懂，可是我却吃了一惊。对于世界各地的语言，我有研究，他的那句话，从音节上听来，像是西非洲冈比亚一带的土语。我失声道：“天，他说的是西非洲的土语。” 道吉尔博士向我望了一眼，神情很难过：“是的，他一直在说这种语言，一个语言学家说那是西非洲的语言，可是他也不懂。” 我苦笑道：“在西非洲，语言复杂，一种语言可能只有几百个人使用，语言学家当然不会懂。” 博士苦笑：“那他怎么懂的？” 我没有回答博士的问题，只是向陈岛和梁若水道：“现在，至少又证明了一件事，自人脑发射出信号，是人人都有的能力，和文明人或野蛮人无关。” 陈岛道：“是。那纯粹是生物本能，蛾类有这能力，人有这个能力，我相信所有的生物，都有这个能力，只不过我们还没有法子捕捉得到这种讯号而已。” 博士叫了起来：“天，你们在说甚么？” 我向江楼月使了一个眼色，示意江楼月去向博士解释，我来到葛陵少校的面前，用我会说的几种西非洲的土语，对他说着话，但是葛陵少校只是摇头，自顾自说着他那种令人听不懂的话。 我在试了半小时之后，才叹了一声：“真不幸，他受干扰的程度极严重，而且，他脑部受干扰的，是有关掌握语言的那一部分。” 陈岛皱着眉，这时，道吉尔博士已经听完了江楼月向他的解释，也走进房来：“这样说来，他是医不好的，那……唉，怎么向外界公布呢？” 陈岛道：“唯一的办法，是把他们送到我的研究所去，试一试。” 博士问：“结果会怎样？” 陈岛摊着手：“没有人知道。” 博士一副欲哭无泪的样子，江楼月安慰着他：“或许，下一次该派一艘无人驾驶的太空船到那区域去。” 博士尖声道：“派你去！还有下次？” 江楼月吓得不敢出声，只是一个劲地翻着眼。我道：“除了照陈岛的方法之外，没有别的方法，我们知道，他脑部的活动，确然受了某种外来讯号的干扰，但不知如何驱除，只好去碰碰运气。” 博士只是唉声叹气，半晌，才无可奈何地道：“好了，暂时可以说，葛陵少校有紧急任务，必须到欧洲去。” 陈岛说道：“我会和他一起去的，梁医生当然──” 梁着水点头：“事不宜迟，迟了，那位金发美人追究起来，只怕更麻烦了。” 博士长嗟短叹，我们退到外面的客厅上，那两位原来在的精神病医生刚才也听到了江楼月的话，这时，他们发表他们的意见。 一个道：“你们推测的理论，可以成立。现在正在努力进行研究的'心灵相通'的现象，已有相当成功的例子。据我所知，新泽西州杜汉姆心灵学学院，就有一次实验，两个研究员，一个在底特律市的一间密室之中，与外界完全隔绝，另一个则远赴意大利，每日在不同的地方停留。而留在密室中的那个，则凭自己的感觉，写下另一个到过的地方，十处地方，竟被他写中了六处。” 江楼月“嗯”地一声，三句不离本行：“根据电脑的统计，如果靠瞎猜而猜中那六处地方的机会，是九亿分之一。” 那个精神病医生继道：“所谓心灵感应，听起来好像玄之又玄，但根据你们的解释，就简单得多了，那是脑讯号的发射与接收。” 另一个精神病医生道：“是的，在我的病人之中，有一个，因为工业意外而断了右臂，他的整条右臂，早已经手术切除了，可是他总觉得右臂发生剧痛。根本不存在的手臂会感到剧痛，那自然是他的脑部活动，使他感到痛，而不是真的痛。”我吸了一口气：“这种情形和洪安的看见不存在的东西，时造看不到的存在的东西，有点相同。” 各人静了一会，才不约而同，发出了一下叹息声来。梁若水说出了每一个人为何叹息的原因。 梁若水道：“人脑，实在太复杂，也太容易被控制，太不容易了解，或许，这就是人的生命的形式？” 没有人回答她的问题，实在无从回答。她的这个问题，也使人心情郁闷，不想回答。 过了好一会，我才道：“人到了对这个问题想不通的时候，就会步向虚幻之途，对真和假、存在和不存在、真实和虚无之间的界限，也越来越模糊，甚至划上等号。” 江楼月闷哼了一声，大声道：“只要根据推测得到的理论，研究下去，一定可以有成绩的。” 陈岛显然赞成江楼月的意见，他忙道：“江博士，你说得对，我会穷毕生之力去研究，以后如果在仪器方面，有要你帮助之处──” 江楼月拍他的胸口：“我一定尽力而为。” 陈岛又向道吉尔博士道：“关于你在太空收集讯号的仪器，我想借来参考一下。” 道吉尔博士想了一想，慨然道：“好。” 他们几个博士，继续在讨论著将来如何在研究上合作的问题，我想已经没有我的事了，我宁愿早一点到东京去陪白素。 于是我向他们告辞，又到飞机场去。在飞机上，照例甚么也不理会，只是睡觉。到了东京之后，直驱酒店，芳子和弥子陪着白素，白素见到了我，自然很高兴。我和高田警官联络上之后，他的声音中充满了关切：“你真有办法使尊夫人没有事？” 我取笑道：“你还没有想出辩护的方法来？” 高田声音沮丧：“还没有。”我道：“慢慢想，你一定会想到的。” 到了开庭那一天，热闹无比，记者群集，那位律师愁眉苦脸。 主控开始传讯证人，第一个上台的是宝田满，他详细他讲述看到的情形，讲完之后，白素的律师双手抱住了头，不敢抬起来。法庭中所有的人，都用诧异的目光望向白素，心中显然全在想：何以这样出色的一个人会做那么凶残的事？ 白素十分镇定，带着微笑。轮到辩方律师盘问证人，那律师向我望来，我在他耳边，低语了几句，那律师像是才吞了一只炮仗椒，一副垂头气的样子，问：“宝田先生，你说看到死者用手抓住破裂了的玻璃，企图阻止外跌，但是被告还是不断推他？” 宝田满肯定地道：“是。那情形可怕极了，破裂的玻璃，割得死者的手全是血。” 宝田满的话才开口，厅中突然有一个人，发出了“啊”地一下呼叫声来，法官立时对这怒目相向，可是那人却笑容满面，一副高兴之极的模样。 那个人，就是高田警官，我和他互望了一眼，点了点头，因为我知道他为甚么呼叫，他已经想出了我有方法可以令白素自由离开法庭。 我向他作了一个手势，示意他离开法庭，高田警官满面笑容，走了出去。和聪明人打交道，真是愉快的事，我甚至不必和他交谈一句，他就知道自己该去做甚么了。 接着，是两个女工轮流作供，每次作供完毕，我都叫律师去问同样的问题，两个证人作了同样肯定的答覆。 这时，庭外突然传了一阵喧哗，我知道高田已经回来了，又对律师讲了几句，律师大是兴奋，立时道：“法官大人，我有一项强有力的证据，可以推翻三位目击证人的证供，请法官大人准于呈堂。” 主控方面没有反对，法官点头批准，法庭的门打开，法庭中所有的人，都愕然站起，人人可以看到，高田警官和一个殓房的职员，推着一具白布覆盖着的尸体，走了进来。 法官一再敲槌，法庭中才静了下来。白素的律师侃侃而谈，和刚才判若两人：“法官大人，这是死者张强的尸体，刚才，三位证人的证供中，都提及死者双手抓住破裂的玻璃，割得他双手鲜血四浅，现在请大人看死者的双手。” 律师走过去，揭开白布，把尸体的双手一起提起来，尸体的双手谁都看得出来，丝毫没有割伤过的痕迹。 法庭中又传出了一阵交头接耳声，律师又道：“死者的尸体，曾经过详细的检验，法医官的报告书中，也从来未曾提及死者双手有过伤痕。” 律师讲到这里，向我望来，我递了一张字条给他，他看了一下，照着我在字条中所写的说：“我不指责三位证人是在说谎，只想指出一点；三位证人看到的，显然不是事实，没有任何事实去支持他们的证供。” 法庭上的喧哗，法官已无法控制了。 半小时之后，我和白素、律师、高田，一起离开法庭，大批记者跟着拍照，证供与事实不符，白素自然无罪释放，张强的死，纯粹因为他脑部不知道接受了甚么讯号的误导。 我相信，尾杉的死，原因也是一样，接近了误导的信号，或许那信号令得他自己以为是一条鱼，所以就跃向山溪之中。 只有一个疑问，始终不能确实解开，那就是，张强当晚在回到旅馆之后，为甚么不打电话给我。 我和白素商量这个疑问，得出的结论是，当时尾杉可能在酒店之中。张强回来，尾杉看到了，可能对张强采取了某种行动，最可能是对张强进行了不知不觉的催眠。 催眠术本来也是讯号输出，使人接受的一种方法，有单对单的催眠，也有大规模有组织的催眠宣传，用在商业上，政治上，使成千上万的人，接受输出讯号的误导。 真正的情形如何不得而知，但尾杉既然事后曾取回仪器，他和张强早曾相遇，极有可能。 我们并没有多在东京停留，就回家，休息了几天之后，就到维也纳去，目的地是维也纳的安普蛾类研究所。 当我们走进陈岛的办公室之际，看到梁若水正在墙上，挂起一幅画。 那幅画，就是在台北一个画廊中见到过，也曾挂在梁若水办公室中的“茫点”。 我帮着她挂好了画：“现在，我多少可以解释一下画家的用心了，眼睛部分遮着，这表示看到和看不到，其实是一样的，真相和不是真相，眼不想作用，起作用的是脑。” 梁若水点头：“是，而人脑又是那样迷茫，对讯号的接受，甚至不能自己作主，太容易受外来讯号的影响，而作出错误的判断。” 白素叹了一声：“人类的历史，就是在这样的情形之下产生的。” 梁若水也叹了一声：“甚么时候，我们才自己是自己的主人，不受各种各样外来信号的干扰？人脑中的茫点何在？这是我想要研究的中心。” 我们讲到这里时，陈岛走了进来。我忙问：“三位不幸者的情形怎样？” 陈岛道：“葛陵少校的情形最好，三个人一起在实验室中，接受我们搜集的讯号的输出，开始的时候，三个人都表现得很慌乱，但是葛陵少校突然恢复了正常，他说，他连自己是怎么降落的都不记得了，那一段日子，在他的记忆中是一片空白，就像喝醉了酒的人，不记得发生过甚么事。” 我倒抽了一口凉气：“他居然能操纵太空穿梭机降落地面？” 陈岛作了一个手势：“那可能是他的潜意识还未曾受到误导干扰，人的脑部构造实在太复杂了，不知要多久才能有一点研究结果。”我和白素有同感。我们在陈岛的带领之下，参观了他的研究所，他研究的目的是甚么，我已经知道，但是研究的过程如何，却实在没有法子了解。 各位如果到维也纳，不妨到安普蛾类研究所的门口去看看，不过这个研究所是绝对谢绝参观的。 洪安和时造会怎样，那只好看他们接受偶然的因素是多少，换句通俗一点的话说，要看他们的运气。离开了维也纳之后，回到了家中，总算事情告了一个段落，但是心中的茫然之感，却久久不能去。 人类对于自己身体主要的构成部分，所知竟然如此之少，难怪人生那么痛苦。
