I replied, "It doesn't matter, the stinging pain is fading." 当他问到第四次时，我感到刺痛已经减退到了可以忍受的程度，我也实在等得急，所以，重新又睁开了眼来。面对着那片冰崖，看到了在透明的冰崖之中的一切。 由于景象实在太奇特，所以有一两个问题，我应该急着问的，也忘了问，例如张坚在甚么地方之类，我只是全神贯注地盯着前面看，温宝裕紧靠我站立着，我简直如同石像，至少呆立了超过十分钟。 我看到的是甚么呢？ 如果要我用一句话来回答，那么，我的回答只有一句：“不知道。” 但是，我却可以详舷细细，形容我所看到的景象──必然十分舷细地形容，不然，根本无法表达出眼前景象的那种无可名状的奇诡。 我所看到的一切，全在冰崖之后，那平滑晶莹透明的冰崖，究竟有多厚，无法知道。 所谓“看到的东西在冰崖之后”，正确一点说，应该是：在冰崖之中，看到的一切，全被晶莹透明的冰所包围着，也就是说，一切东西，全凝结在巨大无比的冰崖中。 在冰崖中的东西，四面全是坚冰包围，一动也不动的，可是在冰里面的许多东西，给人的感觉，却不是静态，而是动态。 举一个例子来说，有一种东西叫琥珀，树脂凝结而成，在琥珀之中，往往有着昆虫。如果有一只昆虫，正在展翅欲飞之时，恰好有一大团树脂落在它的身上，把它裹住，若干年后，树脂变成了琥珀，在琥珀中的昆虫，仍然是展翅欲飞的形态，给人的感觉，也就是动态，不是静态。 这时，我所看到的，在透明的坚冰中，那些给人以动态感的东西的情形，正是如此。 由于冰崖不知道有多么厚，虽然透明晶莹，但是被冻结在里面的东西很多，有的在冰崖深处，只见影绰可见，不像是在冰崖这表面处的那些，看来如此清晰。 说了半天，冻结在冰崖之中的，究竟是甚么东西呢？我实在说不上来，但可以肯定的是，它们一定是生物，或者说，它们一定是动物。 我走近冰崖，伸手可以摸到平滑的表面，距离我最近的是一群看起来像是蜘蛛一样的东西，有着浑圆的身体，和长得出奇的凸出物（姑且可以称之为脚），但又只有四条。在“腿”和“身子”上，都有着密而长的细刺，或许那是毛，色作深褐，极可怕的是在浑圆的“身体”的中间部分，有一个球状凸起，那个凸起，大小如同网球，在那个凸起之上，又有两条长长的凸出，可以姑且称之为“触须”，而在“触须”之上，又各有一个小球，大小如乒乓球。 那一群，至少有十七八个这样的东西，“腿”或“触须”的姿态，各自不同，有的看起来像是正在爬行，而有的，看起来像是正在“搔痒”。这种东西的球状凸起，甚至在冰光掩映之下，还有着闪光，看起来像是活的，形态狰狞可怖。而当我第一眼看清楚其中正在“爬行”的那一个这样的东西时，那东西像是要向我冲过来，令得我不由自主，向后退了一步。 在退出了一步之后，我才有足够的镇定，去想那些东西。被冻结在极度坚硬的冰崖之中，不可能爬出来。虽然说离我最近，但是，至少也在冰崖的表面五公尺之后，我和它们之间，隔着至少五公尺厚的坚冰，不必害怕它们的攻击。 在那种蜘蛛状的东西之旁，是一大堆，重重叠叠堆在一起的另一种东西，那种东西看起来像是甚么爬虫类，色灰，无头无脑，长度约在半公尺到一公尺之间，椭圆形，有着略带拱起的硬甲，在硬甲之旁，是许多看来似脚非脚的凸出物。 这一大堆东西的形状，绝不属于看了之后，可以令人开胃消滞的那一类，但是不那么令人震悸，有一些生物的样子，与之类似，例如古代的三叶虫，或在南中国海沿岸地区，可以见到的鲎鱼之类，样子就差不多。 但是，在那堆东西后面的几个东西，看起来就可怕之极了，看得我不由自主，连连喘气，喉间发出一种莫名其妙的声音来。
