Renowned American neurosurgeon Robert White plans to perform the first human head transplant on a quadriplegic patient.
The procedure has been successful in monkeys and dogs in the past, but humans have larger arteries and muscles, and the surgical anastomosis can block oxygen supply to the brain and cause tissue damage. But Dr White says he has overcome the final hurdle to human head transplants by developing a blood cooling system that can ensure that a living head is deprived of blood for an hour without causing brain damage.
