近处海豚人的欢唿声平息了，远处的声音又递次传来，汇成持续不断的轰鸣声。在这一瞬间，拉姆斯菲尔不能抑制自己的错觉，他变成了凯撒、亚历山大和成吉思汗，在接受千万骑士的欢唿；又好像成了耶和华、安拉和释迦牟尼，在接受万千信徒的朝觐。但他随即想起，自己完全没有必要为此而激动——面前的这些生灵并不是他的同类啊。于是他的目光黯淡下来。 欢唿声终于停止了。海豚人都沉入水中，安静地仰望着他。它们的目光汇成光的海洋，光的电闪。拉姆斯菲尔几乎不能忍受这千万双目光的烧烤——何况他还是赤身裸体呢，想来凯撒、亚历山大和成吉思汗都不会光着屁股接受朝拜吧。虽然下面的朝拜者们也同样是不着寸缕，但这并不能使他觉得好受些，屁股上总是冷嗖嗖的感觉。 他想起杰克曼说海人也要来参加的，他们在哪儿？他找到了，海人就在他的近处，不过人数很少，只有十几人。他们也在喊，但他们的声音完全被海豚人的声音覆盖了。昨天拉姆斯菲尔已经悲哀地觉察到，在海人和海豚人的混合社会里，海豚人是绝对的主流，绝对的强势。不光指人数，更主要的是指心理。比如，这位杰克曼就显然习惯了对海豚人的依附。这是弱势群体对强势群体的不可违逆的趋同，就像在20世纪的人类社会中，黑人歌星用换血换皮肤的方法把自己变成白人。
