Chapter 50 Chapter 50 Short-Term Memory Impairments

Albie stood up abruptly, and the chair fell backward so fast, his bloodshot eyes were highlighted by the white bandage on his forehead. After taking two steps, he stood still, as if he was about to rush up and attack Thomas. "Now you're a damn fool," he said, glaring at Thomas angrily, "or a traitor. Why should we take your word for it when you helped design this place and send us here? We can't handle a single monster in their own turf, let alone a pack of monsters in their little hole, what the hell are you doing?" Thomas was very angry. "What the hell am I doing? There's nothing! Why would I make this up?"

Alby clenched his fists, his arms stiffened. "Since we know that the purpose of sending you here is to kill us all, why should we trust you?" Thomas stared at him in disbelief. "Alby, do you have short-term memory impairment? I risked my life to get you out of the maze—if it wasn't for me, you'd be dead!" "Maybe it's just a trick to win our trust. If you're with the group who sent us here, you don't have to worry about the monster hurting you at all—maybe it's all an act." Thomas' anger was because The words subsided a little, and he regretted it.There was something strange about the atmosphere—full of suspicion.

"Alby," Minho finally interjected, much to Thomas' relief, "that's probably the dumbest theory I've ever heard. He just suffered a terrible injury three days ago, you think that's acting too? " Alby nodded curtly and said, "Maybe so." "I did that on purpose," Thomas said loudly, with all the anger in his mouth. "Would you like to see the cuts and bruises all over my body for the chance of recovering my memory so we can all escape?" Alby said nothing, his face still twitching with anger. His eyes were full of tears, and the veins on his neck were bulging. "We can't go back!" he finally yelled, turning around and looking at everyone in the room. "I see our fate—we can't go back!"

"That's what you're trying to tell us, isn't it?" Newt asks. "Are you kidding me?" Alby turns to Newt in a rage, and he even raises his fist.He reined in it, though, and walked past Newt with his fists down, before slumping into his chair, his face in his hands, completely broken.Thomas was so amazed that the fearless chief of the glade was weeping. "Alby tell everyone," Newt urged, unwilling to let him go, "what the hell is going on?" "I did it," Alby sobbed, her voice very distressed, "I did it." "What did you do?" Newt asked.Like Thomas, he looked confused.

Alby looked up and said with tears in his eyes, "I burned the map. I did it. I bang my head on the table so you'll think someone else did it. I lied, I burned the whole map, I did it!" The guardians exchanged glances with each other, and their shock could be clearly seen from the raised eyebrows and wide eyes. But for Thomas, it all made sense.Alby recalled bad memories before he came here, and it made him not want to go back to the past at all. "Well, luckily we rescued those maps," Minho sneered almost expressionlessly, "Thank you for the reminder you gave us after the period of physical pain - let's protect the maps."

Thomas watches how Alby responds to Minho's taunts - comments bordering on cruelty - but he acts like he didn't hear them.Instead of getting angry, Newt demands an explanation from Alby.Thomas knew why Newt wasn't angry—the map was safe and the code had been cracked, so it didn't matter. "Listen," said Alby, sounding like he was begging—almost hysterical, "we're never going back to where we were. I see it all, and I'm reminded of all the horrible, most horrible things .a burning earth, a disease—a disease called the Flare. It's terrible—worse than we have here."

"If we stay here, we'll all die!" Minho yelled, "It's worse than death!" Alby didn't answer, he just stared at Minho for a long time.Thomas's mind was now full of what Alby had just said.Flare, what a familiar word, but he was sure that he didn't remember these things when he was going through the pain change period. "Yes," said Alby at last, "it's worse than going home and dying." Minho leaned back in his chair with a snicker. "Man, you're useless. Listen, I'm on Thomas' side, I'm on Thomas' side 100 percent. If we're going to die, damn it, let's fight to the death."

"Inside the maze or outside the maze?" Thomas added, relieved by Minho's unwavering support. He turned to Alby and looked at him bravely. "In the world you remember, we all survived." Alby stood up again, defeated. "Do what you want." He sighed, "It doesn't matter. We're going to die anyway." With that, he walked towards the door and left the house.Newt shook his head and exhaled deeply. "It hasn't been the same since he got stung—maybe it's a memory problem. What's the world like with the Flare?" "I don't care about that," Minho said, "it's better than dying here. Once we get out we can deal with the creators, but for now we'll have to follow their plan, go through the will-o'-the-wisp hole and Get out. If one of us is destined to die, so be it."

Frypan snorted and said, "You guys are going to drive me crazy, I can't get out of the maze, and being with the Griever in their bachelor apartment is the dumbest idea I've ever heard in my life, so why don't we suicide." The other Guardians were arguing all at once, each trying to convince the other, that Newt finally had to yell at them to shut up. After everyone fell silent, Thomas spoke again: "I'm going to go through the will-o'-the-wisp hole, even if I die on the way. It seems that Minho will make the same decision, and I guarantee Teresa will join us. If we can fight off the monsters and hold out until someone successfully enters the code and shuts the monsters off, we can escape through the door they came in. We can pass the test and face the creators.”

Newt grinned, but not in a good mood. "You think we can fight off the monsters? Even if we don't die, we'll probably get stung by them. When we reach the cliff, all the monsters will be there waiting for us - the blade beetles are always there, creators Know exactly when we're going to be there." Newt was horrified by this, but Thomas knew it was time to tell them the last part of his plan. "I don't think they'll sting us—body pain was an experimental variable when we were living in the glade, but it's gone once we're out of here. Also, maybe something will happen to us favorable."

"Really?" Newt asked, rolling his eyes. "I really want to know what it is." "It doesn't do the creators any favors if we all die - it's hard to do, but not impossible. I think we've now established that the monster is only going to kill us every day. Then when we are running towards the ghost fire cave, someone can sacrifice himself to protect everyone, I think maybe this is also designed." The entire room was silent until the guardian of the house of blood burst out laughing. "I'm sorry," asked Winston, "so you mean that we throw a wretch into the pack of wolves so the others can escape? Is that your brilliant suggestion?" The advice sounded bad, and Thomas didn't want to agree, but another idea came to him. "Yes, Winston, I'm glad you listened to me." He deliberately ignored Winston's glare. "Besides, it's obvious who that poor thing is." "Oh, is it?" asked Winston. "Who?" Thomas folded his arms and said, "Me."
