Chapter 48 Chapter 48 The balance is broken

The van hurtled forward, Lawrence gripping the steering wheel tightly.Thomas turned and looked out the window, but couldn't see anything.Somehow, the man was still on top of the van. As soon as Thomas turned around, a face hung from the front windshield, looking upside down at them.Apparently it was a woman, and Lawrence drove down the alleyway at terrifying speed, causing her hair to swirl in the wind. The woman looked at Thomas, then smiled, revealing a surprising set of white teeth. "What is she holding on to?" Thomas exclaimed. Lawrence replied in a low voice, "Who knows, but she won't last long."

The woman kept staring at Thomas as she let go of one hand, clenched it into a fist, and started banging on the windowpane.Boom, boom, boom. She kept smiling brightly, and the street lamp shone on her white teeth, shining brightly. "Will you get rid of her, please?" Brenda said loudly. "Okay." Lawrence stepped on the brake quickly. The woman flew into the air and rushed out like a grenade from a launcher, her arms splayed like windmill leaves, her legs spread apart and she fell to the ground.Thomas blinked his eyes shut tightly, then looked at her nervously again.Surprisingly, she was still moving, staggering to her feet. She regained her balance and turned slowly toward them, the van's headlights illuminating every inch of her skin.

She didn't smile again, not at all.Instead, she pursed her lips and let out a ferocious howl, her veins burst out and her face flushed red.Staring at Thomas again made him shiver. Lawrence stepped on the gas, and the Crazy looked like she was about to hit the car, as if she'd managed to block it, but at the last moment, she backed away and watched them drive by.Thomas watched her intently, and he took one last look at her, catching a glimpse of her frowning, her eyes clearing, like she realized what she had done, like she still had a hint of before she went mad. Seeing her like this made Thomas feel even more uncomfortable. "She seemed both mad and sane."

"Lucky, it's just her," Lawrence murmured. Brenda squeezed Thomas' arm. "It hurts to watch, I understand how you and Minho feel when you see Newt like that." Thomas didn't answer, just put his hand on top of hers. They reached the end of the street and Lawrence turned right onto the wider street.Seeing several groups of people standing there in front of them, it seemed that several people were fighting and struggling, but most of them were digging or eating something, and Thomas couldn't see clearly.Several ghostly faces stared at them, without any trace of anger in their eyes, watching them drive past.

No one in the car spoke, as if saying something would alarm the delirious people outside. "It's unbelievable how fast things are happening," Brenda finally said. "Do you think they're planning to take Denver? Can they organize something like that?" "It's hard to say," Lawrence replied, "there are signs. Locals are gone, government representatives are gone, more infected are found. But it looks like a lot of idiots are hiding, waiting for their chance, ready to act. " "Yeah," Brenda said, "it seems like the demented actually outnumber the healthy. Once the balance is thrown, everything comes crashing down."

"Who cares how it happened?" Lawrence said. "It's how it came to be. Look around, this place is a nightmare." He slowed down, made a sharp turn carefully, On a long path. "We're almost there, we have to be more careful now." He switched off the headlights and picked up the speed again. As they drove on, it was getting darker and darker until Thomas couldn't see anything large, and he imagined invisible shadows popping out of nowhere in front of him. "Maybe you can't go too fast." "It's all right," said the man, "I've walked this way a thousand times, and I know it like I know the..."

Thomas flew forward and was pulled back by the seat belt. They've hit something, and it's stuck under the van, and from the sound, it's supposed to be a piece of metal. The van jolted a few times, then stopped. "What is it?" Brenda asked quietly. "I don't know," Lawrence replied softly, "It's probably a trash can or something. It scared me to death." He moved forward little by little, making a sharp scratching sound. There was only a bang, and there was no sound at all. "Okay, it's over." Lawrence said to himself, with a sigh of relief. He continued to drive forward, but at a much slower speed than before.

"Maybe you should turn on the light again?" Thomas suggested, startled by his heartbeat so fast. "I can't see anything." "Yeah," Brenda went on, "I'm sure everyone out there heard it." "I think so." Lawrence switched on the light. A beam of blue-white light from the headlights illuminated the entire alleyway, and in contrast to the previous darkness, it seemed brighter than the sun.Thomas was blinded by the bright light, then slowly opened, only to be scared out of his wits.Twenty feet ahead, at least thirty people appeared, standing in a heap, completely blocking the way.

Their pale faces were haggard, scratches and bruises. They stood there in rags, each staring at the light as if undisturbed. They are like standing corpses, raised up after death. Thomas shivered, from head to toe. The crowd began to leave, and they moved together, retreating to the side of the alleyway, leaving a large space in the middle. Then one of them waved his arm, indicating that the van could move on. "These lunatics are too polite," murmured Lawrence.
