“回太后的话，奴才的父亲一直在京里当差。” “怪不得！”慈禧太后说，“你的京话，一点都没有变样儿。” 这是夸奖的话，慧妃不知道该怎么样回答，但在家已经被教导过，皇太后皇帝说话，不能不答，只好低着头轻轻回一声：“是！” 筹备三年，动用一两千万银子的大婚盛典，终于告成。论功行赏，普沛恩施，由惇王赏紫禁城内坐四人轿、恭王恢复了“世袭罔替”、醇王晋封亲王，到抬轿的校尉赏给银两，不论大小官员吏役，只要跟大婚二字沾上点边的，无不被恩。甚至象张之洞那样，以翰林院编修，撰拟乐章的份内之事，也赏加了“侍读”的衔。不过对皇帝来说，最好的是，他借可以召见载澂，赏了“御前行走”的差使。 皆大欢喜之余，各衙门慢慢都恢复了常态。皇帝也把丢了好些日子的书本翻了开来，弘德殿的功课照旧，即使在明年正月二十六亲政以后，也仍旧得上书房，这是已奉了明发懿旨的。
