Chapter 1 Primer

Liera looked at Victor and smiled.Victor was twenty-five, of course a grown man. However, every man -- even the most grown-up man -- has a little boy inside of him.As a nineteen-year-old girl in love, Valeria was convinced of this. "The burrow," she whispered in Victor's ear. "The burrow, and the basilisk. Woo-woo-woo!" Vija snorted. They were sitting in a room that would have looked dirty had it not been dimly lit.Surrounded by excited children and adults with shy smiles. On a stage covered with mysterious symbols, a young man is performing pretentiously, with heavy pale makeup on his face and a flowing black robe on his body.Below the stage, several crimson spotlights shone on him.

"You are about to see a horrible scene!" The young man dragged his voice. "Ah! ah! I am afraid even of what you are about to see!" He enunciated with such clarity that only a drama school student would have.Even Lila, who is not very good at English, understands every word. "I love the burrows in Budapest," Victor whispered to her. "It's a real old burrow there...very interesting." "It's just one big house of horrors." Victor nodded apologetically: "Fortunately, it's cooler." Edinburgh is quite hot in September.Vega and Liera took a stroll in the King's Castle in the morning - a must-see for tourists. Then they chose one of the many taverns, ate something and drank a pint each, and then ran here to escape the midday sun...

"You haven't changed your mind?" the actor in black yelled. Behind Liera came a faint sob.She looked back, and was surprised to find that it was a girl who was not young, she was about sixteen years old, and her mother and little brother were standing beside her.Immediately in the darkness, a staff member came over and took the whole family out. "That's the downside of the affluent life in Europe," Vija said with a didactic tone. "In Russia, is it possible that such a big girl will be scared by the horror house? The life is too comfortable so that they will be afraid of all the little fights..."

Liera frowned.Victor's father was a politician. Although his official position was not high, he was very patriotic.Want to prove the flaws of Western civilization anytime and anywhere.Of course, this did not prevent him from sending his son to the University of Edinburgh to study. Victor spends ten months abroad every year, but he still sticks to his father's rhetoric. It is difficult to find a few patriotic people like him in all of Russia.Sometimes this amused Liella, and sometimes it made her a little angry. Thankfully, the prologue is over quickly. The "Cave in Scotland" tour started slowly. The shrewd locals separated several small rooms in several dilapidated concrete houses under the bridge and next to the train station.Turn on a few light bulbs, hang rags and faux cobwebs around, and stick pictures of the fanatics and murderers who have run amok throughout Edinburgh's long history. Then you can recruit children.

"Here's a Spanish boot!" cried a shabby girl in one of the rooms, who was the guide of the procession. "In fact, it is a terrible instrument of torture!" The children squealed with excitement, and the adults looked at each other awkwardly, as if they had been caught blowing soap bubbles or playing with dolls. In order not to be so bored, Liera and Weijia deliberately fell behind the line and kissed amidst the tour guide's lengthy explanation. They have been together for half a year. Both have a feeling that there is going to be something special about this relationship for them.

"Now we're going through a mirror maze!" said the guide. Oddly enough, it's actually quite interesting.Liera always felt that statements such as "getting lost in a mirror maze" or "smacking your forehead against the glass" were exaggerated. How can it be impossible to see where the mirror is and where the road is? It turns out that it is really possible, and it is even easy to get confused. They jostled and jostled between the cold mirrors, flailing their arms and yelling as they tumbled around. The circle of visitors suddenly changed from a small group to a large group.Victor even waved to a person for a while to say hello. When they were finally out of the maze (the door was cunningly disguised as a mirror), he was still looking around.

"Who are you looking for?" Liera asked. "Uh, it's okay." Victor smiled. "I read it wrong." Then there are several exhibition halls arranged as eerie medieval prisons, and then we arrive at the "Blood River".The children who had calmed down got on a long tin boat, which started slowly and headed for the "Vampire Castle" along the blackened river.Horrible grinning and menacing voices came from the darkness, invisible wings flapped overhead, and the river murmured. It's just disappointing that after the boat has drifted about five meters with the help of the wind, the feeling of progress is created by the blower blowing directly towards the cheek.

Liera was still a little creepy. She felt ashamed that she should feel afraid, but she was afraid. The two of them were sitting in the last row with no one beside them. The vampire impersonator was humming and laughing at the front, but at the back... The back is empty. But she always felt that someone was there. "Vitya, I'm afraid." Liera took his hand. "Stupid..." Victor whispered to her. "Just don't cry, okay?" "Okay." Liera agreed. "Ha-ha-ha! All around are vicious vampires!" Victor said, imitating the actor's tone. "I feel them sneaking into me!"

Liera closed her eyes and squeezed his hand even tighter.Really like a child!Men are still children who can't grow up even if their hair is white! Why are you so scary? "Ouch!" Victor yelled reflexively, "Someone...someone is biting my neck..." "Fool!" Liera shouted at him, without opening her eyes. "Lerka, someone is sucking my blood..." Viktor said darkly and desperately. "I'm not even afraid...like a dream..." The cold wind blows from the blower, the river beats against the side of the boat, there is a lot of shouting, and it seems that the smell of blood can still be smelled.Victor couldn't help but let go of his hand.Liera pinched his hand angrily, but Victor didn't even shudder.

"I'm afraid, wooden man!" cried Liera loudly. Victor didn't answer anything, just leaned towards her gently. She was less afraid. "I'm going to bite your neck off myself!" Liera threatened.Victor seemed embarrassed and said nothing. In a moment of impatience, Liera added: "Drink all your blood, you know? Immediately after the wedding..." This is the first time she has used the term in relation to their relationship. She held her breath, trying to see Victor's reaction. It's impossible for single men not to respond to the word "wedding"!Either you will be intimidated, or you will be ecstatic.

Victor seemed to be dozing off on her shoulder. "Scared you?" Liera asked, then smiled nervously and opened her eyes.Although the shouting had subsided, it was still pitch black all around. "Forget it... I won't bite you. We don't need any wedding either!" Victor remained silent. The machine made a creaking sound, and the tin boat moved forward about five meters along the concrete ditch.Dim lights came on, and children jumped ashore, chirping.A three or four-year-old girl held her mother with one hand, and stuffed a finger of the other hand in her mouth. She kept looking over her shoulder and would not take her eyes off Liera. What fascinates her so much?Because Lella spoke a foreign language? No, that's impossible, they're in Europe... Liera let out a long breath and looked at Victor. He really fell asleep! With eyes closed, there was still a hint of a smile on the corner of his mouth. "What are you doing?" Liera touched Victor lightly, but he collapsed limply, his head hitting the side of the iron boat.Liera screamed, grabbed Victor, and made him lie down on the wooden bench. What happened?what happened? How did he become so depressed?Immediately upon hearing the scream came a waiter—in a black robe, with rubber fangs, and cheeks painted red and black. He jumped into the boat nimbly. "Miss, what's the matter with your friend?" The young man was still very young, and looked about Liera's age. "Well... no... I don't know!" She glanced at the waiter, and the young man looked panic-stricken. "Help me! Gotta get him out of the boat!" "Is it a heart problem?" The young man bent down, trying to grab Victor's shoulder. But he quickly withdrew his hand again, as if he had touched something hot. "What's going on? Are you kidding? Turn on the light! Turn on the light!" He shook his hand again and again, and sticky black drops of blood dripped from his hand.Liera was stunned, staring at Victor's motionless body. The lights came on—bright white light dispelling the shadows and turning the frightening ride into a tedious farce. However, the farce ended with the amusement show.Viktor's neck was split in two, with the edges turned outward. The wound was bleeding slowly, like the last drops of ketchup from an overturned bottle.Because the wound was deep, the blood gushing out from time to time was even more frightening.Right on the artery...like being razed by two razors...or two rows of razor-sharp teeth... Liera yelped, squealing, her eyes closed, her hands flailing in the air, like a little girl who has witnessed her beloved cat being crushed to death by a truck on the highway. When it comes down to it, every woman -- even the most grown-up -- has a frightened little girl inside.
