"The castes in Tianzhu are very strict, and they do not marry each other. The leader said: "Don't mages be afraid of robbers?" Xuanzang said: "I am a monk from China. I have traveled thousands of miles to the west and almost died. I have made up my mind to seek scriptures. Now I am not afraid even if tigers and poisonous snakes block my way. You are human beings. Should I be afraid of people?" What he said made the thief's ears red and his face hot, the thief scratched his ears and said: "You came from so far away, and you are the only one?" "Exactly." "Why are you so courageous? Aren't you afraid of death?" Xuanzang read ten together and said: "Amitabha Buddha, if you are afraid of death, you will not come, and if you come, you will not be afraid of death." The thief said: "Everyone who met us kowtowed and knelt down in fright, but the image is not afraid of death. It seems that you are a true Buddha." Xuanzang read again: "Amitabha, I am not a Buddha, I am just a poor monk. But I just want to advise you a few words, the Buddha warned: good and evil cause and effect, eternal, good will be rewarded with good, evil will be rewarded with evil, hope You go to worship in front of the Tathagata Buddha, and from then on, you can change your mind and be a new person." The thief was a little moved when he heard this, and asked: "We have done evil, will the Bodhisattva forgive us?" Xuanzang hurriedly said: "As long as you put down the butcher knife and correct your evil ways, the Buddha will forgive you. After the Tathagata Buddha surrendered the evil dragon in this cave, the reason why he left the Buddha's shadow is to let the evil dragon see the Buddha. The shadow changes its black heart into a kind heart." The thief looked happy when he heard this, and said: "We are forced to become thieves because of life. We are willing to repent to the Buddha, as long as we don't give us any evil rewards." Xuanzang further warned: "Turn back early, and reduce some sins earlier to reduce more evil rewards. I advise you to turn back early." Xuanzang also said: "The sea of ​​suffering is boundless, and turning back is the shore. Now that you have the intention to turn back, please go to the Buddha Shadow Cave to worship the Tathagata Buddha Shadow more often. The Buddha will pray for you." "We are willing to listen to the mage." Several thieves kowtowed to the mage in unison. Xuanzang said: "Excellent! Then please swear in front of the Buddha's shadow, change from evil to good from now on! Amitabha." The thieves said in unison, "OK." So the five thieves followed Xuanzang into the cave. The cave was very dark, and there was still water dripping from the walls. Xuanzang recalled an old man he had consulted and said: "Go straight into the cave, and when you touch the east wall, back up more than fifty steps, and then raise your head to the east." The mage and the others walked straight into the cave, and they bumped into the wall, and then stepped back more than fifty steps, facing the east wall and began to worship, but after praying more than a hundred times, the black wall was still black. Yes, there is no light to be seen. Xuanzang was in a hurry, and he said while praying: "Tathagata Buddha! Didn't the Buddha tell us to save ourselves and others! Even though they had bad karma, they are now willing to change their evil and do good. Please show up to the Buddha and give them a chance to repent. Buddha!" After they prayed more than two hundred times, a light as big as a bowl gradually appeared on the east wall, and Xuanzang was overjoyed.He read again: "Great Buddha, Tathagata, please show your image. We are all waiting for you devoutly." After saying that, he went to worship the wall again. Xuanzang and the others kept worshiping and worshiping... The light on the wall became bigger and bigger, and finally, the majestic Buddha statue sitting on the lotus platform was fully revealed. "Ah! Buddha Tathagata, you are finally here, Amitabha!" The five thieves also bowed directly to the Buddha happily.The leader said: "May the Buddha bless you! We swear to you that we will never do evil again, and we are willing to abandon evil and do good." Several other thieves also read: "Buddha, please forgive us! We are willing to change our ways and return to our righteousness!" Xuanzang was very moved when he heard this, wept and said: "Buddha Tathagata! Did you hear that? The prodigal son will never change his mind! They have really changed their minds. Please pray for him!" After Xuanzang finished reading, they knelt down and kowtowed hundreds of times... The sound of their prayers echoed on the wall, and suddenly, the light on the wall became brighter, and a golden mountain appeared in an instant, imprinting on the golden cassock of the Buddha, and suddenly, the golden light shone, appearing and disappearing, and Xuanzang was so happy They worshiped again piously, and when they raised their heads again, the Buddha shadow had disappeared. Xuanzang and the five thieves left the Buddha Shadow Cave reluctantly. When they got outside the cave, the sky was clear and the sun was shining brightly. The five men threw down their butcher knives as if they had seen the light again, and prepared to go back to their hometowns. up.When parting, they all knelt down to Xuanzang: "Master, we are willing to accept the precept!" Xuanzang nodded and said solemnly: "Will you be able to uphold from now on: no killing, no stealing, no sexual misconduct, no lying, no drinking?" "Can hold!" The tall man at the head said gratefully to Xuanzang: "Fortunately, we met the mage today, which made us suddenly wake up. If your sons don't learn well and become thieves, can you bear it? If your Gaotang parents know that the money his son gave them is actually murder and robbery If you come here, you won’t be pissed off to death.” The leader said: "The mage is right. Through the repentance of the five thieves, he deeply felt the meaning of saving himself and others.He thinks that a person who enters Buddhism not only saves himself, but also saves others. Helping others escape the sea of ​​suffering is the highest purpose of Buddhism.Therefore, he became more determined that the state of Nirvana is by no means illusory, but can be real, thus laying the foundation for his famous "Consciousness-only Theory". The audience was full of discussions, but the Buddha still closed his eyes and preached the Dharma. The girl thought that the Buddha was cowardly, so she jumped and screamed to provoke the Buddha. But the pillow fell on the ground. After the conspiracy was exposed, she was ashamed and wanted to run away. Everyone caught her and asked the Buddha to punish her severely. The Buddha still closed his eyes and sat quietly, but he just waved his hand and said: 'Let her go!'” Xuanzang went on to say: "There was also a girl named Sun Dali who was killed by foreign believers and thrown into the Gion Abode where the Buddha preached. Not only has the reputation of Buddhism not been damaged in the slightest, but it has become even more respected and prestigious." Hearing what Xuanzang said, the girl became restless and her face turned pale.Xuanzang raised his voice again and said: "Heretics who want to commit crimes, don't regard Buddha's tolerance and compassion as cowardice. So, Xuanzang grabbed the little novice monk, and while the robbers were not paying attention, he quietly squatted down and hid in a thorn forest... After squatting for a while, they got out of the hole and ran southeast. The two ran for two miles in one breath, and finally saw someone.They hurried over and told a local man who was plowing the land that the bandits were going to kill. The man was a Brahmin. woo woo woo... The sirens echoed, and after a while, people rushed over from all directions. They were very angry when they heard the news that the robbers had robbed money and killed people.Because of the remote location and dense forests in this area, bandits come and go and the villagers suffer a lot.So they formed a joint defense. When encountering thieves, as long as the alarm is raised, everyone will come to rescue them. An angry crowd of about eighty people, led by Xuanzang and the other two, rushed towards the scene of the accident in the dense forest.When Xuanzang and the others arrived, the thieves were still fighting because of the uneven distribution of the loot. A villager asked: "Master, everyone is sad because their property was robbed, but you didn't cry, why?" Xuanzang laughed and said: "All property is external to the body. The most precious thing in life is life. As long as you keep your life, why worry about mere petty things!" The villagers admired them very much, invited Xuanzang and the others to the village, entertained them with meals, and donated clothes to them.
