余鱼同待群雄一走，急忙下床，站在桌旁，等众人脚步消失，亮火折子点了蜡烛，低声道：“你来干么？” 床上那人揭开棉被，跳下床来，坐在床沿之上，低头不语，胸口起伏，泪珠莹然，正是李可秀的女儿、陆菲青的女徒弟李沅芷。只见她一身黑衣，更衬得肌肤胜雪，一双手白玉一般，放在膝盖上，一言不发，眼泪一滴一滴落在手背。 那日提督府一战，余鱼同随红花会群雄飘然而去，李沅芷伤心欲绝，整天骑了马在杭州城里城外乱闯。李可秀明白女儿心事，也不加管束，让她自行散心。这天黎明，她在西城驰马，刚巧遇到骆冰从巡抚衙门盗了玉瓶回去。她曾和骆冰数次会面，知她是红花会中人物，于是远远跟随，直到天目山来。只是她万万料想不到，自己魂牵梦萦的那个心上人，竟然就是对这个美貌少妇梦萦魂牵。李沅芷十分机伶，骆冰又心情畅快，丝毫没有提防，居然没发觉后面有人跟踪。 当晚李沅芷踪迹数次被群雄发现，均得侥幸躲过。她只想找到余鱼同，向他剖白心事，却闯到了徐天宏和周绮的新房之外。心砚一叫嚷，群雄四下拦截，李沅芷左肩终于吃了常赫志一掌。她忍痛在暗中一躲，声东击西的丢了几块石子，直闯到后院来，在庭中劈面遇到陆菲青，被他一把拉住。李沅芷惊叫：“师父。”陆菲青怒道：“你来干甚么？”李沅芷道：“我找余师哥有话说。”陆菲青叹气摇头，心中不忍，向左边的厢房一指。李沅芷拍门，叫了几声：“余师哥。” 当众人四下巡查之时，余鱼同已然醒来，手持金笛，斜倚床边，以防敌人袭击，忽然听得李沅芷的声音，大吃一惊，忙拔开门闩，李沅芷冲了进去。他想：黑暗之中，孤男寡女同处一室甚是不妥，便亮火折点燃蜡烛，刚想询问，群雄已查问过来。此情此景，原本无私，却成有弊，实在好不尴尬，只得先行遮掩再说，以免她从此难以做人。他身上有伤，行动不便，便用笛中短箭打灭烛火。两人屏息不动。待听得徐天宏拍门，李沅芷低声道：“余师哥救我。”余鱼同无法可想，只得让她躲入了被窝。 若非陈家洛一力回护，这被子一揭，当真不堪设想。好容易脱险，但见她泪眼盈盈，深情款款，余鱼同心肠登时软了，叹了口气，说道：“你对我一片真心，我又不是蠢牛木马，那会不知？但你是官家小姐，我却是江湖上的亡命之徒，怎敢害了你的终身？” 李沅芷哭道：“你这么突然一走，就算了吗？”余鱼同道：“我也知对你不起。但我是苦命之人，心如槁木死灰……你，你还是回去吧。”李沅芷道：“你为了救朋友，跟我爹爹作对，我并不怪你，你是为了义气。”沉吟了一下又道：“似你这般文武双全，干么不好好做事，图个功名富贵？偏要在江湖上厮混，这多么没出息，只要你向好，我爹爹……”余鱼同怒道：“我们红花会行侠仗义，个个是铁铮铮的汉子，怎能做满洲人的走狗？” 李沅芷知道说错了话，涨红了脸，过了一会道：“人各有志，我也不敢勉强。只要你爱这样，我也会觉得好的。我答应听你的话，以后决不再去帮爹爹，我想我师父也会喜欢。”最后两句话说得声音响了些，多半窗外的陆菲青也听见了。余鱼同坐在桌边，只是不语。李沅芷低声道：“你说我官家小姐不好，那我就不做官家小姐。你说你红花会好，那我也……我也跟着你做……做江湖上的亡命之徒……”这几句话用了极大的气力才说出口，说到最后，又羞又急，竟哭了出来。 余鱼同柔声道：“我当初身受重伤，若非得你相救，千山万水的送到杭州你府上调养，这条性命早就没啦，按理说，那是粉身碎骨也报答不了。只是……唉，你的恩德，只好来生图报了。” 李沅芷霍地站起，说道：“你是不是另有美貌贤慧的心上人，以致这样把我瞧得一钱不值？”在余鱼同，那确是“除却巫山不是云”，他始终对骆冰一往情深。李沅芷人品相貌并不在骆冰之下，但情有独钟，却是无可奈何，听她如此相询，不知怎生回答才是。 李沅芷道：“你对她这样倾心，那她定是胜我十倍了，带我去见见成不成？”余鱼同给她缠得无法可施，忽然拉下脸上蒙着的手帕，说道：“我已变成这么一个丑八怪，你瞧个清楚吧！”李沅芷蓦地见到他脸上凹凹凸凸，尽是焦黄的疮疤，烛光映照下可怖异常，不由得吓了一跳，倒退两步，低低惊呼一声。 余鱼同愤然道：“我是不祥之人。我心地不好，对人不住，做了坏事，又是生来命苦……现今你好走了吧！”李沅芷骤然见到他这副模样，心惊胆战，不知如何是好。余鱼同哈哈大笑，说道：“我这副丑怪样子，你见一眼也受不了。李小姐，你后悔今晚到这里来了吧？哈哈，哈哈！”他边说边笑，状若疯狂。李沅芷更是害怕，大叫一声，掩面奔出房去。余鱼同笑了一会，自悲身世，伏在桌上痛哭起来。 陆菲青坐在房外阶石之上，虽然不明详情，也已料到了七八成，心知这时对余鱼同劝慰开导都无用处，心想：“沅芷夜来之事，虽然有关女孩子的名节，但如不说明谢罪，可对不起红花会众位朋友。”于是走到陈家洛房来。 陈家洛刚睡下。心砚听得陆菲青叫门，忙开房门，陈家洛起床披衣相迎。陆菲青道：“总舵主，我向你请罪来啦！”陈家洛惊道：“甚么？十四弟怎么样？”只道余鱼同遭遇凶险。陆菲青道：“不是，他很好。你道今晚来捣乱的是谁？”陈家洛道：“不知。”陆菲青道：“那是我的小徒。我管教无方，纵得她任性胡为。今日是七爷大喜的日子，无礼打扰，惊动各位，实在是万分抱憾。”陈家洛默然不语。陆菲青道：“小徒已经走了，日后我定要找到她，向各位赔罪。现今我先行谢过。”说着站起来深深一揖。 陈家洛忙站起还礼，隔了一会，说道：“令徒武功得自前辈真传，身手确是不凡。”陆菲青只道陈家洛是指她今晚闯庄而言，哪知他两人曾在西湖交过手，说道：“这孩子少不更事，到处惹祸，得罪朋友，我有时真后悔收了这个不成器的徒儿。”陈家洛道：“前辈太客气了。令徒曾到过回部吧？”陆菲青道：“她从小在西北一带。”陈家洛道：“嗯，我见他和那位回人姑娘好似交情不错。”霍青桐和陈家洛离别之时，曾说过一句话：“那人是怎样的人，你可去问她师父。”陈家洛几次想问陆菲青，总觉太着痕迹，始终忍着不问，此刻陆菲青自己过来谈起，这才轻描淡写、似乎漠不关心的问了几句，其实心中已在怦怦暗跳，手心潜出汗水。 陆菲青道：“那是为了抢可兰经的事，才和她结识的。起初有过一点误会，霍青桐姑娘还和小徒交过两次手，后来我出来说明跟天山双鹰的交情，两人才结成朋友。年轻人一见如故，倒着实亲热得很呢。”说罢捻须微笑。陈家洛听着却满不是味儿。 陆菲青只道他早知李沅芷是女子，始终没提她女扮男装的事。陈家洛心中不快，脸上虽然没显出来，但语言之间不免稍露冷淡。陆菲青只道他心恼李沅芷无礼闯庄，红花会这许多英雄人物，居然没能扣住一个初出道的少女，未免很失面子，心下甚是歉然，哪猜得到他另有心事，当下又道歉几句，正要告退，忽然门外心砚叫道：“少爷，十四爷来啦！” 门帘一掀，一名庄丁扶着余鱼同进来，他见陆菲青也在这里，不觉一愕。庄丁退了出去。陈家洛道：“你有事对我说，我过来不是一样？你身上有伤，别多走动。”余鱼同道：“总舵主，刚才有个人躲在我房里，你一定看出来了。你当时故作不知，给我面子，做兄弟的很感激你的好意。你虽然不问，我可不能不说。”陈家洛道：“咱们情同骨肉，还有甚么信不过的。”余鱼同道：“这人全是冲着小弟一人而来，和大伙决无干系。只因这事说来和人名节有关……”陈家洛道：“既然如此，那不必说了。好啦，这事以后咱们谁也别提，你回去休息。心砚，扶十四爷回去。”余鱼同以为陆菲青已将此事说过，陈家洛怕他不好意思，是以不愿再提，于是致谢回房，陆菲青也即作别。
次晨群雄齐下山来。各人互道珍重，分头进发。 陈家洛和周仲英一路本是同往西北，但周仲英说，他当年在嵩山少林寺学艺之时，便曾听师父及师伯叔们说起，南方莆田少林下院的武功与嵩山少林一脉相传，但数百年来莆田少林寺出了几位了不起的人物，于少林派武功颇有发扬，乘着此番南来，意欲就近前去探访，盼有机缘切磋求教。陈家洛道：“南少林门人弟子遍于江南，声势浩大，周老前辈于切磋武功之余，盼多所结纳。日后咱们举事，要是少林寺肯助一臂之力，实是天下百姓之福。”周仲英道：“谨当奉命。”于是带同妻子、徒弟孟健雄、安健刚，启程向南。 临别时周大奶奶对周绮再三叮嘱，现今做了媳妇，不可再闹小性子，争斗生事。周绮撅起嘴唇道：“要是他欺侮我呢？”说着嘴唇向徐天宏背心一歪。周大奶奶道：“好好的怎会欺侮你？”昨晚花烛之夜，李沅芷前来一闹，骆冰把他们的衣服搬了个地方，也不知那个法儿还灵不灵，周绮心中很是惦记，但不好意思再问骆冰，这时见父母远别，不禁掉下泪来。 周仲英嘱咐了女儿几句，对徐天宏道：“你妹子性子直爽，很不懂事，宏儿你要多多担待。要是她冲撞于你，可别跟她一般见识，将来让我罚她。”周绮急道：“爹爹你也帮他，难道定会是我不好？”周仲英一笑上马，向陈家洛和文泰来等抱拳作别，向南而去。 陈家洛、文泰来、骆冰、徐天宏、周绮、章进、余鱼同、心砚一行八人，向北经孝丰、安吉、溧阳，到了金陵。渡过长江后，文泰来伤势已然痊愈，余鱼同也已大好。一路往北，天时渐寒，草木枯黄，已是初冬景象。过开封后，余鱼同伤势痊可，便弃车乘马。 这一日出了开封西门，八骑马放开脚步，沿着大道奔去。朔风怒号，尘沙扑面。文泰来所乘白马脚程奇快，一骑马先冲了上去，一口气奔出五十里，来到一处镇甸，叫饭店杀鸡做饭，先行预备，等众人到时打尖。他坐在店口，泡了壶茶，拿着手巾抹脸，忽见东边店房中人影一晃，有人探头张望，一见到他便疾忙缩回。文泰来起了疑心，背转身喝茶。过了小半个时辰，陈家洛等也都赶上来了，文泰来悄悄和众人说知。徐天宏向东店房一看，只见窗纸舐湿，一颗乌溜溜的眼珠正向他们注视，见到徐天宏的眼光射来，立即避开。徐天宏低声笑道：“那是初出道的雏儿，半点规矩也不懂，一下子就露出了马脚。”骆冰笑道：“这样的人也出来混道儿，看来还在打咱们的主意呢。” 陈家洛向心砚道：“你过去瞧瞧，要是他手头不便，就接济他一点。”心砚应声站起，走到那店房门口，高声吟道：“天下万水俱同源，红花绿叶是一家。”这是红花会招呼同道的讯号。江湖上各帮会互通声气，患难相助，纵然不是红花会会友，只要知道讯号，回答一句：“小弟是某某帮某某舵主属下，有求红花会大哥相助。”那么几两银子的接济是一定有的。心砚见房中寂然无声，又说了一遍，忽然房门呀的一声打开，一个黑衣人走了出来，那人一顶大帽遮住了半边脸，伸手递过一个纸团，道：“给你们十四爷。”心砚接住了，正要询问，那人已奔出店门，上马疾驰而去。 心砚把纸团交给余鱼同，道：“十四爷，那人叫我给你的。”余鱼同接过打开，见纸上写着十六个细字：“情深意真，岂在丑俊？千山万水，苦随君行。”笔致娟秀，认得是李沅芷的字迹，不料她竟一路跟随而来，眉头一皱，把字条交给陈家洛。 陈家洛看了，料想是男女私情之事，不便多问，将字条还了给他。余鱼同道：“这人跟我纠缠不清，现下一定在前路等待。小弟想在此弃陆乘舟，避开这人，到潼关再和大家会齐。”章进怒道：“咱们这许多人在这里，又何必怕他？他本事再好，咱们也斗他一斗。”余鱼同道：“不是怕，我是不想见这个人。”章进道：“那么咱们教训教训他，教他不敢跟随就是了。这是甚么人？这般不识好歹！”余鱼同好生为难，不便回答。 陈家洛知他有难言之隐，说道：“十四弟既要坐船，那也好，在船上可以多睡睡，没骑马那么劳顿。心砚，你跟着服侍十四爷。”心砚答应了，他小孩心性，嫌坐船气闷，虽然公子之命不敢违抗，不免怏怏。余鱼同看出了他的心意，坚称伤势已经痊愈，不必心砚随伴。于是众人来到黄河边上，包了一艘船，言明直放潼关。陈家洛等送余鱼同上船，眼见那船张帆远去，才乘马又行。章进对余鱼同吞吞吐吐的神气很是不满，连骂：“酸秀才，不知搞甚么鬼。”骆冰道：“十四弟烧坏脸后，心情很是不快，作事不免有点异常，咱们就顺着他点儿。”周绮道：“那次咱们在文光镇上，听说他和一个姑娘在一起，后来又不知怎样的到了杭州。”章进道：“他鬼鬼祟祟的，多半跟娘儿们有关，否则为甚么怕人家找麻烦？”文泰来喝道：“十弟你别胡说。”
余鱼同坐船行了几日，见李沅芷不再跟来，才放下了心。这日遇上了逆风，天色已黑，离镇甸仍远，水势湍急，舟子不敢夜航，只得在荒野间泊了船。余鱼同中夜醒来，翻来覆去的尽睡不着，只见一轮圆月映在大河之上，浊流滚滚而下，气象雄伟，逸兴忽起，抽出金笛，悠悠扬扬的吹了起来。他感怀身世，满腔心事，都在这笛子中发泄出来，忽而激越，忽而凄楚，正自全神吹奏，忽听背后有人高声喝采：“好笛子！”微微一惊，收笛回头，月光下只见有三人沿河岸走来。 三人走近，其中一人说道：“我们贪赶路程，错过了宿头，正自烦恼，听阁下笛声清亮，禁不住喝采，还请勿怪。”余鱼同听他说得客气，忙站了起来，说道：“荒野之间，小弟胡乱吹奏，聒噪扰耳，有辱清听。”那人听他说话文诌诌地，似是个读书人，缓缓走近。 余鱼同道：“如蒙不弃，请下舟来小酌一番如何？”那人道：“最好，最好！”三人走到岸边，纵身一跃，都轻飘飘的落在船头。余鱼同心中吃惊，暗忖：“这三人武功不弱，不知是何等人物，倒要小心在意。”当下假作文弱胆怯，双手紧紧握住船边，只怕船侧而落下水去。 只见当先一人躯干魁伟，穿件茧绸面棉袍，似是个乡绅。第二人满腮浓须，整张脸只见黑漆一团。第三人却穿蒙古装束，一件羊羔皮袍翻出
