Chapter 2 Preface to the new edition

This time, based on the new facts found during the visit to China in September 1982 and subsequent investigations, as well as the new materials collected, a new edition was published after supplementary verification of the first and second parts of the book.In the new edition, the controversial part of the testimony is deleted, new facts ascertained are added, and comments from readers are also absorbed.Regarding the content of the controversial testimonies, I plan to sort out the interview notes and the speech recordings of the former Unit 731 members themselves and publish them separately.

Since its occurrence (September 14, 1982), "The Devil's Satiety" and its author and assistant Masaki Shimosato have been severely criticized and attacked by society.Judging from the weight of the content of this documentary and the great social influence, this is a matter of course.Taking the issue of misuse of photos as an opportunity, those forces in Japan who hope to revive militarism and do not like to expose these crimes took the opportunity to get in. Some media insisted on the misuse of photos. In addition, "The Devil's Feast" was first serialized and published in the "Chiqi" newspaper, so they believed that it was a strategy of the Japanese Communist Party and used it as a weapon to attack the party.I am a writer who has nothing to do with the party. The Devil's Feast is purely my own work.It is rare for a documentary written by a writer to be used as a tool for political and ideological struggle.

My real intention in writing "The Devil's Feed" is not just to expose the brutality of the invading army and expose its crime itself, but to pass the truth to the next generation who don't understand the war, so as to prevent the Japanese from repeating the same mistakes.I believe this is the duty of war medical examiners. The documentary of Unit 731 does not only reveal the partial war crimes committed by one unit, but explains through the unit that it aims to have stronger weapons than the enemy in the war, the mechanism of throwing at all hands, and the fact that good citizens who are usually kind are killed by war groups. Horror when controlled by a madman.

Some people have criticized that Unit 731 is not only a dark side, it would be unfair not to write about its contribution to medicine and epidemic prevention and water supply.Indeed, Unit 731 has made enormous contributions in the fields of medicine and epidemic prevention and water supply. However, we must never forget: the basis for the establishment of Unit 731 was aggression. Japan broke into Manchuria, not at the invitation of China, but because Japan worried that it would not be able to keep up with the bus that Europe and the United States were competing to invade China after the European and American countries carve up Africa. In the name of defending Asia with human hands, it is a convenient strategy to arbitrarily draw Japan's lifeline on Chinese territory.

Japan is trying to become the leader of Asia, building a "kingly paradise" in China, and building a "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" throughout Asia.No matter what contribution the aggressor makes for the people of the invaded country in the invaded area, it is only a part of the colonial policy of making other countries as victims for the benefit of its own country. What would happen if China changed its position and invaded Japan under the banner of building a kingly paradise or a Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere with China as its leader?Assuming that, as part of the colonial policy, some contributions were made to Japan, is it possible for a Japanese to evaluate this practice? The so-called fairness means that both parties who are equal can say that it is fair.No matter what contributions the Japanese army, including Unit 731, made in the past invaded countries, it cannot offset his crimes of aggression in the slightest.

"Eagle's Feed" embodies the resentment of countless war victims and the vow never to let that tragedy happen again. This book was once out of print, and now it has been resurrected by Kadokawa Shoten with more substantial content, which makes me very happy. It would be a great honor for me if this book could add a brick to the edifice of peace and democracy in Japan. I would like to express my deep gratitude to all the people in Kadokawa Shoten who gave great support to the new students of this book, and to all the readers who continued to give me warm and strong support and encouragement during difficult times.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere apologies for the misuse of photos of unknown authors and unrelated to Unit 731 in "The Devil's Satiation" (sequel). Joichi Morimura
