"" “在的。”魏三爷仍低声道:“不过在名单上叫“周鸿庆”;框吉周、江鸟鸿、庆祝的庆。不是“莫人杰”。莫人杰用“周鸿庆”这个化名瞒得了旁人,瞒不过魏三。“周鸿庆”是他莫家当年在杭州兴办过塘行时所聘任的一个厨子,手艺极佳。尤其是一道“红煨清冻鸭”,能煨得鸭骨酥软,浑似无物,再以寒冰镇之,吃时入口即化、骨肉流离。所以有人还给这道菜拼了个谐句,叫“冰肌玉骨香无汗,水暖春江鸟不知”。上句改蜀主孟昶的词,赞这菜色的口感和味道;下句改王安石诗,且嵌入了“江”、“鸟”二字,是要让名厨随这美食而传扬——” “您说得多了我怕记不住,三爷。”万得福道。 魏一二爷也自笑了,道:“一谈起吃来,我就忘了正经,让老弟见笑了。这么着,回头你就趁四下无人,把前半段向老爷子回禀了,鸭子那一节就甭说了。” 向来这荷塘小集,七老从无私言窃行。但凡有什么事、什么话,无不可公开。唯独那一回,让万得福觉得好生蹊跷——直觉以为:万老爷子不得不藉由李绶武取得一份机密名单,而李绶武又似乎不同意万老爷子要这名单的动机和作为。至于魏三爷显然并不反对万老爷子的作法,甚至还尽其所知地帮了个忙,可是他却明白指示万得福:此事不可与其它人语。 在两年前的那夜里,万得福固然依言行事,却有如丈二金刚、摸不着头脑。直到数日之后——也就是民国五十二年的十月九日,才有一则惊天动地的大消息远从日本东京传来。 那是在十月七日的清晨,一个经由中共当局派赴日本来考察的“油压机械考察团”团中,有那么一个叫周鸿庆的工程师想要投诚,于是趁着当时台湾方面尙与日本具备正式邦交、且有大使馆驻在的时机,悄悄遁离同行人员监视,雇了一辆出租汽车,径奔中华民国使馆。不料出租车的司机听错了周鸿庆夹生不熟的日语,却把他带到了附近的苏联大使馆去。有道是:“天堂有路偏不走/地狱无门自来投”。苏联大使馆方哪里肯遂其人所愿?自然依国际公法惯例将之交付日本警方。巧的是:这周鸿庆本人预谋投诚的时候,就怕过早出走,反而夜长梦多;是以拖到在日签证到期,准备返回大陆的一日——也就是签证到期的当天——才一举起事。不料日本政府得到此人之时,已经是十月七日午后,而周氏本人的签证恰恰逾期。日本内阁当局不由分说,将他收押禁见,并且在两个月又二十天后交付中共原代表团。 这个事件立时引起轩然大波,台湾本地学生不多久便在尙未经由“老头子”的党团授意之下发起不学日语、不买日本货、不看日本电影、不听日本音乐、不读日本书刊的反日运动,外交部发表谴责声明,驻日大使张厉生则奉准辞职。 这一桩国际纠纷余波荡漾,一直到一九六四年一月九日,周鸿庆终于被遣返中国大陆时仍未止息。“老头子”授意国府公开抗议,并宣布暂时中止中日贸易。一月底,日本首相池田勇人宣布遵守一个中国——也就是中华民国——的政策,还把亲国府的前首相岸信介派来作特使,才稍事改善了两国当时的外交关系。 起初,万得福祇能据他所了解的只字词组推敲:万老爷子早在十月二日——也就是“荷风袭月”的小集当晚——从李绶武的名单和魏三爷的旁证上得知:化名“周鸿庆”的莫人杰投诚未果,却几乎酿成中日两国之间极大的扰攘。可是等民间的五大反日运动炒热到高潮之时——也就是阳历十一月上旬的某日——万老爷子忽然感慨地将当天报纸往地上一扔、同万得福道:““老头子”果然成事不足、偾事有余!” 万得福一听自然知道这话多的是自言自语之慨,且出言抨击极峰,更非他的身分所可以接腔应答的。孰料万老爷子接着又道:“当初他要是知道我会插手,必定不至于同意;那可不现成是个引狼入室的局面。如今倒好,这样把事情闹大了,反而给小日本一个一不做、二不休的台阶。你看着罢!不出十年,小日本非和“对面”的勾搭上不可。这么看来,倒是我这步棋下错了呢!” 事后,万老爷子才幽幽向他吐露:原来那莫人杰一直是杭州湖墅一带过塘行的一霸,与德胜坝项氏一家素称莫逆;这交情代代相袭,已不下百有余年。到了抗日战争结束之后,项氏一家转行投资海运,并且将营业重镇由杭州迁往上海。当时作成这个决定且主其事的就是民国十八年在太湖之滨与他万氏主仆二人有过交臂之缘与折箭之辱的项迪豪。至于同一时期的莫氏一家却因为战争焚掠和过塘生意的落伍而凋败了。传到莫人杰身上,偌大一份家业却祇余朽木慢船五、七条,空头帐款几百万,老宅一幢,还有满坑满谷的债务。 莫人杰那年年仅十六,口袋里除了欠条、当票之外,祇剩一本祖传的《莫家拳谱》。据闻当时项迪豪即遣人致送书信一封,信中告诉莫人杰:项家愿意承担莫家一切债务,且派人替莫家索回在外所有帐款,另于其海运公司之中为莫人杰安插高阶职务,且有干股可以领拿,这些条件祇求一物回报,就是将那《莫家拳谱》交给项迪豪硏读三日。项迪豪并公然宣称:十六年前在杭州高银巷、惠民街口被北京飘花门孙少华父子当众羞辱之仇不可不报,然而若要报得此仇,恐怕非修习莫家拳不能奏功;武林史称:“人言项、莫双连手/天下无敌水无边”,则甚望莫家贤弟成全则个云云。 提出这种财大气粗的要求,即便是再优沃的条件,也不免贻笑武林方家——起码还会落一句有失厚道的指责。在莫人杰而言,他大可以相应不理;设若果尔因为境遇实在窘困而不得不答应了这笔交易,江湖上也未必招人什么议论。可此子却做了桩怪事:他一方面回信答应了项迪豪,且央送信人将《莫家拳谱》的上册随信附致,并于信中解释道:由于祖传拳谱仅有一套行世,并无附本;而仓促间来不及雇人将下册抄绘完竣,是以先行奉上前半卷八八六十四式,一俟后半卷抄绘完成,即另请专人送呈,且毋须归还。 项迪豪收到书信和半部拳谱可谓大喜过望,当下赍发一个财务专员小组,夤夜奔赴杭州,解决莫家一切债务,还在三日之内收讨了大部分积欠莫家许久的帐款。不料到了第四日头上,这财务小组成员中的领事者吴某却在商会会馆的待客小厅中目睹一桩奇案:一个头戴黑呢帽、身着黑西装的不速之客忽然举枪射杀了莫人杰。那人行凶之前还大义凛然地训诫了莫人杰一番,说什么莫家出了这样一个不肖的子孙,居然为了区区几个小钱就出卖传家之宝、日后势必要在江湖上平添无数恩怨是非。且北京飘花门孙氏向来行侠仗义,抗战期间在沦陷区亦捐输粮饷物资、支持游击部队,于国家社会,皆有殊勋奇功;岂容宵小之辈横加扰犯?此番老漕帮光棍为着民族大忠、家国大义,出手制裁,也是当仁不让的行径——这些话,都是要莫人杰死得瞑目,也显示光棍明人不做暗事的风范。话才说完,当场掏出一把连发盒子,照着莫人杰胸前就放了三响。 奇的是:这个案子只找着了弃置在现场的凶枪一把,还有剌客遗留的灰色毛料围巾一条。目击此案的吴某为了作证的缘故,不得不在杭州逆旅羁栖竟月,还亲自参加了莫人杰的丧礼。然而杀人者逃逸无踪,市井上却谣诱纷纭。有人说这是老漕帮向与搞海运的不对头,此中仇连怨结,可谓冰冻三尺、非一日之寒——毕竟当初粮米帮庵清南北输运粮米的生意正是在光绪末年废止的;之所以废漕,也正缘于海运之大兴。从这个背景上看:老漕帮出手杀一个在江湖上已无依无傍的莫人杰并非为什么大忠大义,却是为了积世累代的嫌隙。 另一个说法,则是北京飘花门孙少华年事已高,自知当年在通衢大路之上所折辱的对头如今已成富家巨室,既非赤手空拳所可力敌,又没有豪资恒产得以干拒,索性假借老漕帮光棍的名义阻止莫
