Chapter 45 Section 3 From Changsha to Mengzi

Due to successive defeats in the inland wars and the fierce Japanese army burning, killing and looting, a large number of bureaucrats, gentry, businessmen and refugees fled to the southwest border, especially Kunming, which is known as the Spring City. Amid the hustle and bustle of people and noise.Prices began to rise, and the housing was even more tense, showing signs of bursting and uncovering.Faced with this situation, Jiang Menglin, a member of the Standing Committee of the Southwest Associated University who rushed to Kunming in advance, decided to let the teachers and students of the Southwest Associated University temporarily settle down in Mengzi, Yunnan. At the end of February 1938, Jiang Menglin sent a telegram to Ye Gongchao, director of the Foreign Languages Department of Changsha Linda University, saying: "There is no school building in Kunming, and the construction is in a dilemma. The Mengzi Customs Bank and other places are idle, and the houses are connected. It can accommodate 900 people. People, according to the inspection report, the climate and flowers and trees are good, which can be used as a school site." Not long after, with the direct interrogation and coordination of "Yunnan King" Long Yun and the great help of people from all walks of life in Kunming, the Temporary University finally rented Kunhua Agricultural School in Kunming There are several halls for urgent needs, but the school building still cannot meet the needs of the teachers and students of the whole school. Therefore, Jiang Menglin went to Mengzi to investigate in person, and was welcomed by the local government and gentry. Jiang believed that some teachers and students could be accommodated here. On the afternoon of March 14, Jiang Menglin, who returned from Mengzi to Kunming, called Zhang Boling, Zhou Binglin, Shi Jiayang, Wu Youxun, Qin Yan, Zheng Tianting and other school affairs leaders to a meeting in Kunming Quanshu Guild Hall, and decided to set up the Faculty of Arts and Law in Mengzi, tentatively named Mengzi branch school, and sent Zheng Tianting (Peking University), Wang Mingzhi (Tsinghua University), and Yang Shixian (Nankai) to prepare.Wang and Yang arrived in Mengzi before Zheng Tianting to go through the lease and other procedures, and they were ready soon.

Mengzi is located in the southern border of Yunnan Province. It is a remote county-level town, close to the Red River, and can be navigable with Annan (now Vietnam). In the late 1850s and early 1860s, France invaded southern Vietnam by force, and then explored the route from Vietnam to Yunnan, China. During this period, it continued to send troops to spy and invade northern Vietnam. In 1883, France expanded its war of aggression against Vietnam and forced the Vietnamese court to submit. France obtained the right to "protect" Vietnam.China and Vietnam were originally suzerain-vassal relations. In order to prevent France from occupying North Vietnam and endangering China's border, the Qing government sent more troops to the southwestern border to strengthen defense. At this time, the French army no longer took the dying Qing Dynasty seriously, and openly challenged the Qing army, and the Sino-French war broke out.On April 4, the eleventh year of Guangxu (1885), China and France hurriedly signed the terms of an armistice, and the war ended. On June 9th of this year, Li Hongzhang, the representative of the Qing government, and Patner, the French minister, formally signed the "Sino-French Peace Treaty" in Tianjin, that is, the "Sino-French Conference on Vietnam Treaty", or "Vietnam Clause", also known as "Sino-French New Treaty" "The Treaty of Leba".There are ten clauses in the treaty, the first and second of which are: the Qing government recognizes France's right to protect Vietnam; the land border between China and Vietnam is open to trade, and two treaty ports are opened within the Chinese border, one above Baosheng and one north of Lang Son. French businessmen are allowed to live and set up consulates here.

In the thirteenth year of Guangxu (1887), Mengzi, Yunnan, was opened as a commercial port in accordance with the renewal of the Sino-French business treaty, with customs, French consulates, French banks, hospitals, etc., and even Greek Gelushi opened foreign firms and hotels in the city and other commercial facilities. All of a sudden, businessmen from home and abroad flocked to this inconspicuous remote and damp place, and the small town of Mengzi quickly became bustling and prosperous, and the surrounding tin and copper mines increased their mining. Strength, the world-famous "Gejiu Dianxi" is continuously transported to all parts of the world through the Mengzi commercial port and along the rolling red river.According to the data at that time, at its peak, the foreign trade volume of this place alone accounted for 77% to 89.9% of the foreign trade of Yunnan Province, and the small Mengzi became a leading commercial center in southern Yunnan and even in the whole of Yunnan. .

In the 21st year of Guangxu (1895), France forced the Qing government to sign an agreement on the pretext of being successful in the three countries' interference in Japan's return to Liaodong, China, and obtained the right to build the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, and started construction in the 27th year of Guangxu (1901).When the 389-kilometer section from Haiphong to Laojie in Vietnam was completed, the French decided to lay meter-gauge (rails with a distance of 1 meter between two tracks) along the entire line, considering the high mountains and deep valleys in China and the complicated road conditions. The Chinese section originally planned to reach Kunming from Hekou through Mengzi, Lin'an (now Jianshui), Tonghai, Xinxing (now Yuxi), Kunyang, Jinning, Chenggong and other counties, but was threatened by ignorant bureaucrats in Jianshui and Mengzi. A group of masses and lumpen proletarians who did not know the truth jumped up and down and strongly opposed the construction of the railway in its territory. In addition, the French survey team committed crimes in Mengzi and other places, looking for good women and flower girls to accompany wine, rape and rape, which aroused strong opposition from conscientious gentry and the people along the line, forcing the French to abandon the original route. Nanxi went northward, avoiding Mengzi City to the east, passing through Bisezhai, Ami Prefecture (now Kaiyuan), Poxi (now Panxi), Yiliang, and Chenggong to Kunming.

In the twenty-ninth year of Guangxu (1903), the French government approved the planning of the 466-kilometer eastern line, and the construction officially started the following year.On April 15, the first year of Xuantong (1909), the first phase of the railway was completed and opened to Bisezhai. On April 1 of the following year, the whole line was opened to traffic. The first railway in Yunnan and also China's first international line - the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway was born.Since then, breakthroughs have taken place in Yunnan's traffic conditions, and this line has played a major role in the import and export of materials.Of course, during the construction of the railway, the Chinese people paid a heavy price. The French colonists enslaved and oppressed the Chinese road construction workers in an extremely brutal way. During the seven years of the construction of the Yunnan section, more than 300,000 migrant workers were recruited from various provinces. Nearly 80,000 people were tortured to death. It can be said that there are strands of Chinese bones under every sleeper.

Bisezhai is located 12 kilometers northeast of Mengzi County. Before the train, it was a remote village with only a dozen families. After opening to traffic, it has become a special station on the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. The convenient transportation has brought vitality and unlimited business opportunities to this previously unknown small village. Whenever a train whizzing by with black smoke and light steam roars in, the station is crowded with passengers getting on and off the train and mountains of people piled up. goods.Bisezhai is like a red balloon that has been injected with air, and it swells up in the blink of an eye, becoming a station with extremely busy loading, unloading, moving, and transportation, and a large market town where merchants, officials, and travelers gather.

The mine owners and businessmen in Mengzi, Jianshui and other places who were neglected saw the rapid rise of Bisezhai by trains, so in May of the second year of Xuantong (1910), they jointly wrote to Li Jingxi, Governor of Yunnan and Guizhou, requesting the construction of a road connecting Bisezhai The railway from Mengzi County to Gejiu City is used to sell high-quality Gejiu tin and other minerals abroad. In 1921, the whole line of Gebi Railway was opened to traffic, and later it was extended to Jianshui and Shiping, which was called Gebishi Railway.Bisezhai Station is just at the intersection of the Tropic of Cancer and the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, where the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway (meter gauge) and Gebishi Railway (inch gauge) meet and transfer. Bisezhai's commercial status is as A shining star soared into the sky in southern Yunnan, and all kinds of profit seekers rushed to rush under the shining starlight. A small village soon became a prosperous area in Yunnan.

Not long after, Bisezhai set up customs sub-customs. International giants such as Mobil Sanda Water and Fire Oil Company, British Merchant Asia Water and Fire Oil Company, French Gabor Company, German Texaco Water and Fire Oil Company and more than ten foreign companies set up in Bisezhai. Set up a representative office.Next to the station, there is also a Gorax Hotel opened by the Greeks, which has all kinds of business items.Chinese businessmen, Vietnamese businessmen, French businessmen, and Italian businessmen have opened various hotels and shops in this small land, and this place was once called the "Little Paris" of the East.

The reputation of Bisezhai rose rapidly, but Mengzi County, which was prosperous for a while, fell into a slump. The customs originally stationed in Mengzi moved to Kunming. Many companies and foreign firms either moved to Bisezhai or the provincial capital Kunming. Mengzi quickly declined and returned to the situation decades ago, leaving only pieces abandoned by their owners. The tall and sturdy bungalows squatted in the same place, guarding loneliness, and occasionally showed the world its former glory with a gloomy peripheral vision. ——It is the decline of Mengzi's commercial status and the large number of buildings left unused that give the teachers and students of the Faculty of Arts and Law of the United Nations University the historical opportunity to settle in.

Some professors withdrawn from Changsha, such as Tang Yongtong, He Lin, Wu Mi, Mao Zishui, etc., arrived in Kunming and temporarily lived in the Yixi and Quanshu guild halls in Kunming. The campus is divided into three main parts: 1. The original Mengzi Customs was used as a classroom for students to attend classes. The lease period is one year and three months, and the rent is only one yuan in national currency. Its symbolic meaning is far greater than its actual meaning. 2. The Bank of France and the Consulate as a library and staff quarters. These three houses are in a large courtyard, so it is quite convenient to come and go.According to Wu Mi's description: "This is a French-style garden managed and arranged by the French in the past. The flowers and trees are flourishing, and most of them are tropical plants such as palm banyan (white tree. Yinkeyun, that is, the god oil of eucalyptus, whose juice can prevent miasma. , made of cinchona), etc. The green shade is lush, beautiful and colorful.... However, the houses are very rare, half Chinese and half Western style, and most of them are damaged and dilapidated. Now they are being demolished and repaired. The general affairs of the branch here are temporarily managed by Mr. Zheng Tianting ( Yisheng, Fujian) presided over the project. He was a virtuous and talented person, and Mr. Xia Zhenhuan was in charge of the project. Mi and others temporarily lived in a row of semi-western-style rooms with a floor in the bank. Mi and Tu Wenjun shared the semi-small room in front of Room 311, two The bed and the writing desk are fully occupied. Meals are served in the teaching staff cafeteria. Morning porridge, an egg. Lunch and dinner rice, the daily meal cost is 0.04 yuan, and I am constantly suffering from hunger. Mi eats bread sold in the Annan coffee shop. Hang bread in the air with strings to prevent rat food.”

3. The foreign house opened by Kalos, a Greek, is used for the residence of another batch of arriving professors. This is the second place rented by the branch school, and it is also the main place of residence.Gelushi Foreign Trade Co., Ltd. is a two-story building with front and rear entrances, facing the lake and facing the street, with exquisite and magnificent architecture. The upper floor facing the street is used as the staff dormitory, and the downstairs and the junior one are used as the male dormitory.Zheng Tianting recalled: "When I first went to the place, I remembered that the month plate in the room was 192×year×month×day, which indicated that it would not be open again in the future. There are still a large number of foreign wines for sale in the foreign firm. Some professors from Tsinghua University saw it. I was very happy, and immediately had a drink." After April 8, more and more professors arrived in Mengzi, and the houses began to become tense. The number of bank residents in the customs courtyard increased from 2 people to 4 people per room, and there are doors connecting each room, so it is "noisy and chaotic". The situation is not far from that of the Quanshu Guild Hall in Kunming, and it is difficult to read and write letters." From April 12th to 20th, male and female students who came to Yunnan via Guangdong and Hong Kong arrived in Mengzi in batches. The students who came to Yunnan on foot from Changsha also arrived at the end of April. So many foreigners rushed in suddenly, and the local villagers and gentry came to watch one after another, causing a sensation in the whole county. On May 4th, the branch campus of the United Nations University announced the opening of school, and the lonely small town of Mengzi became lively again. All the girls lived in the first three-storey building in Zhou Bozhai’s residence on Zao Street in the city, which was called “Tingfeng Building” by the students. The teachers and students were deeply moved.Because Mengzi is located in the border area, the social composition is mixed, and the gangsters who rob houses come to patronize from time to time.In order to prevent accidents, the person in charge of the branch school negotiated with the local government, and the county sent 40 security teams to station in the Sanyuan Palace near the "Tingfeng Building" to protect the girls. The school police escorted them into the city for accommodation. The teachers and students who came here found that the geographical environment of Mengzi was quite different from that of the inland provinces. Spring was the rainy season, and the torrential rain continued for ten days, so that people could not go out, and most of the shops in the city were closed. A giant snake entered the room and fled in panic, beyond words."The professors who used to live in Mengzi Customs, because there are many people in one room, different temperaments, noisy and chaotic, it is not suitable for class preparation and rest, some professors with unique personalities began to find their own residences. In late April, Wu Mi, Tang Yongtong, He Lin, Pu Jiangqing and a foreign professor shared a small western-style two-story building off campus, which Wu Mi named "Tiannan Jingshe".In May, it rained almost every day, heavier and harder than before, and the roads were muddy and difficult to walk. From "Tiannan Jingshe" to the classroom of Mengzi branch school, one has to pass through a field. After a long rain, the accumulated water will turn into mud. mud monkey.Wu Mi and other professors, who could not bear the hardship, returned to the dormitory on campus one after another, and ate in the staff cafeteria.Because of the long rains, for professors who live in bungalows or on the first floor of buildings, the room is flooded to the foot of the bed. In addition to mosquitoes and flies flying around, there are also groups of colorful and large snakes scurrying into the room, entwining around the bed, and facing the owner. Shaking his head and tail, staring and sticking out his tongue, he acted like biting someone. When the professors saw him, they screamed and ran away, not daring to go back to the dormitory for a long time.A young lecturer from Tsinghua University saw a large black crack on the inner wall of the customs courtyard at night. Startled, the lamp in his hand fell out more than ten feet away with a "bang", took two steps back and fell to the ground.Because the old customs site was overgrown with wild grass and many snakes and mosquitoes, it was intimidating. Most professors wanted to live in the upper floor of the Gelushi foreign firm with better conditions, but the foreign firm had limited rooms and had to draw lots to decide. In this regard, Zheng Tianting had such a memory: "I used to live in No. 314 of the Bank of France. After a large number of professors arrived, they drew lots again. No. 314 was drawn by Luo Changpei and Chen Xueping. Da Nian lived in Room 4 and moved in on May 3. In addition, Wen Yiduo, Chen Yinke, Liu Shuya, Fan Jichang, Chen Daisun, Shao Xunzheng, Li Zhuomin, Chen Xujing, Ding Ji, etc. lived on the upper floor of Gelushi. " He also said: "Mr. Yinke arrived in Mengzi later, without family members. He often walked with us, sometimes to Junshan, sometimes near his residence. He was in good health at that time, and we went to Mengzi Middle School to read books together. Before leaving Mengzi, everyone went to visit the Black Dragon Pool in the area, and the round trip was 15 miles, which lasted several hours." Chen Yinke, Professor Pu Xuefeng (No. Tisheng) of the Department of Politics, and a girl arrived at Bisezhai at 4 pm on April 23 in Annan by train, and then took a small train to the former site of Mengzi Customs. It was already dusk , after meeting with Zhu Ziqing and other professors, it became known that the Temporary University had been changed to the National Southwest Associated University. The Linda University, which was originally located in Xi'an, has also been moved to Hanzhong and changed to the National Northwest Associated University. On the second day, after discussing with Fan Jichang, the general affairs director of the branch school, Chen Yinke, Pu Xuefeng, Shen Naizheng and other three professors were allowed to move to the two connected rooms on the upper floor of Gelushi Foreign Firm without drawing lots, and Pu and Shen lived outside. There is a large room, and Chen Yinke lives alone in a small room.A week later, Wen Yiduo came to Mengzi from Kunming, and lived in Room 1, No. 2, Upstairs of Gelushi Foreign Company. The equipment in the professor's room is uniformly configured, including one plank bed (three planks and two benches), one desk, one wooden chair, one kerosene lamp, and nothing else for each person.Because the conditions were too simple, Chen Yinke and others each gave four yuan to buy an old rattan chair from Gelushi Foreign Firm. Although the later professor wanted to ask for a high price, the rattan chair had already been sold out, so they could only make it simple , coping with the day. When traveling from Changsha to Yunnan via Hong Kong and Annan, Chen Yinke took the manuscripts, rubbings, photos, ancient oriental books, and many volumes of "Mongolian Origin and History Notes" and "Five Dynasties History Notes" annotated over the years, together with some documents, Put it into two wooden boxes and hand it over to the railway department for consignment—this is the precious wealth that he has condensed for decades and regards his life.Unexpectedly, when Mrs. Chen arrived in Mengzi, she hired a rickshaw driver to pull the wooden box to her residence and opened the school excitedly, only to find that there were only a few bricks in the box, and there was no trace of books and other things.Faced with such a tragic situation, Chen Yinke fainted on the spot.Later, according to the analysis and deduction of colleagues in the school, it is very likely that something happened to the wooden box when it was changed to the Yunnan-Vietnam train in Haiphong, Vietnam, and the thief may be criminals in the railway industry. They mistakenly thought that there were gold, silver, jewelry, or other valuables in the box. , So I tried to steal it, because most of the books were wrapped in baggage or other things, the thief didn't think it was a book, or thought that there was a lot of money in the book.In order to prevent the early exposure of the theft, a few bricks were put into the box in order to muddle through. It is conceivable that when the thieves opened their bags in the dark with the desire to make a fortune and found that what they contained was a pile of dilapidated books, they must have been very angry. And Chen Yinke, who was in exile in the southwest, looked at a pile of bricks and two empty boxes, filled with grief and indignation, stomped his feet and beat his chest, sighing in vain? What? ! What Chen Yinke lost was not the so-called "rare books and secret books" in the traditional sense, but an annotation book in which he had spent countless efforts to record relevant materials and his own experience in the eyebrows in small script. History and Ancient Oriental Books. This batch of manuscripts can be said to be the "semi-finished product" of his research work, the crystallization of painstaking efforts and thoughts. If it is further processed and polished on this basis, it will be a complete work. The high status and great value of these books in Chen Yinke's heart can be deeply understood by all scholars, especially intellectuals who rely on reading and writing to make a living. On September 23, 1942, Chen Yinke made the following disclosures about the lost books and manuscripts in a letter to his friend Liu Yongji, Dean of the School of Liberal Arts of Wuhan University: The unfinished drafts of my younger brother's 20-year-old writings were lost in Annan. There are notes on Mongolian origins, which are based on the Mongolian and Manchu editions, and the so-called Karab Sutra extracted from Siku, the original Tibetan book that he published, to verify the gains and losses. It is very different from Shen Yi'an's book.Later, I heard that Bo Xihe obtained the original version of the secret history of the Yuan Dynasty in Kulun, so I wanted to add and delete it after it was published.Although I worked hard, the value of the original book is not high. Since the current manuscript has been lost, I will not talk about it anymore. There are also Shishuoxinyu annotations, the main purpose of which is to examine and explain the Wei, Jin and Qing Dynasties and to correct the omissions in Liu's annotations. There are also annotations to the historical records of the Five Dynasties, which are different in style from the old annotations of Peng and Liu, and also have a different interest. They are intended to examine the basis of Yongshu's arguments, and they are also a fragment of the intellectual history of the Northern Song Dynasty. Also, if Buddhist scriptures exist in Sanskrit, they are collated with the Tibetan and Chinese translations. What are the gains and losses of the translators? What is the origin of the original version? , There are also those who are different from today. The similarities and differences, gains and losses, can be seen a little) are listed in the school notes.Although it is lost today, there will be someone who will do it in the future. After You Gang and Tai passed away, my younger brother was troubled by the troubles and did not dare to get involved in this matter. However, there is a Pulaoni poem in Pali, but there is no modern translation of it in Chinese, and it is scattered in the Asher Sutra.Mr. Gang is not very proficient in Pali, and he did not proofread it in detail when he was in Beijing. When my younger brother lived in Berlin, he read from famous German masters. He liked the poems about women who entered Taoism very much. However, they are all works before the Gregorian era, which is particularly valuable. If you want to collect the old translations of the Chinese and make up for the translation and interpretation (?) of his poems, they will all be lost. It is precisely because of the theft of these books and manuscripts that Chen Yinke devoted his painstaking effort and sweat that several new works that could be completed in a short period of time had to be delayed or even vanished."Semi-finished products" such as "Shishuoxinyu Jianzheng" and "Eminent Monk's Biography of Jianzheng" have not been completed, and it has become a lifelong regret.During this period, there was also a small episode, that is, in 1955, 17 years after the catastrophe, Chen Yinke, who lived in Lingnan, suddenly received a letter from Peng Yuming, an overseas Chinese in Vietnam, saying that he lived in Saigon and had gone to Haiphong to search for old books. I got Chen's lost two annotated copies of "New History of the Five Dynasties" and kept them at home.Chen Yinke was overjoyed when he heard the news, and was eager to see the real thing. Unfortunately, the Vietnamese government banned the export of books, and the laws were very strict. Not long after, the flames of war in Vietnam broke out, turning tens of thousands of houses in Saigon into rubble. Unfortunately, Peng Yuming's family was also among them. Thousands of volumes of ancient books in his family were burned. Chen Yinke's annotated version of "New History of the Five Dynasties" and reduced to ashes.According to Chen Yinke later, the only "relic from the original box" he got was a copy of "Lunheng" bought by Liang Zhifeng, an old graduate of Tsinghua University. Among them, it is not a book that you want to bring. In this regard, Chen Yinke said in a letter to his student Jiang Tianshu with regret: "The two boxes of Chinese books and ancient oriental books, rubbings, and photos were all lost that day. At this time, the originals in the old boxes around me are only enough to fill the gaps. It is a kind of "Lunheng" of light and heavy, which is lamentable." Such was the fate of Chen Yinke, and intellectuals who were exiled in the southwest during the war lost their property during the journey everywhere. On November 27, 1937, Wu Mi recorded: "Overcast, light rain. When I arrived at the station at 9:00 in the morning, Mi Zhimao's box had been transported, and I returned home. But it was destroyed, so I tied it with ropes. The black cloud silk cotton gown has also been taken away by others. Afterwards, this Mi put the contents of the box into the other boxes, and this box of Oxford souvenirs no longer exists!" The tragic scene, as an intellectual, what can I say besides sighing? The theft incident made Chen Yinke, who had just arrived in Mengzi, ill and, amidst grief and indignation, he still planned to give lectures. When my health improved a little, I wrote to my colleagues in the Institute of History and Philology of the Academia Sinica for help.Lao Gan (named Zhenyi), Chen Chen (named Yushu) and others from the history group of the Institute of History and Philology have arrived in Kunming, and they have stayed at Zhao Yuanren's house at No. 663 Tuodong Road with colleagues Ding Shengshu and Quan Hansheng of the Institute of History and Philology. On May 1, Chen Yinke sent a letter to Laogan and Chen, writing in a sad style: "My brother has been in Mongolia for ten days, and I want to teach but I have no books. I don't know the History of the Three Kingdoms, the Book of Jin, the Northern and Southern Dynasties, etc. Are the history, Weishu, Suishu, Tongdian, etc. in Kunming? If in Kunming, no matter what version (that is, the twenty-five history of the enlightened Ming Dynasty is also acceptable), please lend it, mail it or ask a friend to take it. Such as the history of Kunming If there is no such book in the language, can you borrow it from friends? This time I came to Mongolia just to ask for food, and I dare not pretend to be teaching.” On May 7, Chen Yinke sent an additional letter to Lao and Chen, saying: "Three Kingdoms and Jin books have been borrowed here, so you don't need to send them. If you can't borrow them for a while, you can delay them. Near the Central Research Institute All the bookcases of the Academy’s history and language were transported to Mengzi and borrowed from the United Nations University. Since there is no catalog, and no one has come to hand it in here, I don’t know if there are any Tripitaka, four series, and three links. Check it out, and show me what book box it is in. At this time, the United Nations University has urged the Institute of History and Languages to send someone to Mengzi to hand it in. The sooner the better, because there are many homeworks that depend on whether the books are there or not. It’s a decision of no. My younger brother, Mr. Mengzhen, will come to Kunming after he arrives in Kunming, around the end of May or early June. All the colleagues in the institute beg for their compliments.” Lao Gan and Chen Chen took immediate action after receiving Chen Yinke's request for help, and sent the first batch of books on May 5.However, the road pass was blocked, and the delivery was not smooth. On May 12, Chen Yinke said in his reply letter: "North and South History received it, and I am very grateful. The Northern History is the Banai version, but the Banai version has not arrived yet?" .) To show that I have sent Wei Shu on the 6th of this month, but I haven’t received it yet, so I beg for a check.” The letter added: “I have entered the rainy season, and my daily life and diet are very inconvenient, and there are many diseases. Those who are here are all complaining, thinking that Kunming may be slightly better than this." Three days later, on May 15, Chen Yinke received a letter from Lao and Chen on May 11, saying that the Tripitaka was not in Kunming but in Chongqing.Chen Yinke, who was anxious, sent another letter expressing his urgency: "My brother needs to use the Tripitaka urgently, because my brother teaches a class of 'Buddhist scripture translation' here, if there is no Dazang, there is no way to quote it. Beg Su Airlines letter please Chongqing Expressway Sending Mengzi, I am very much looking forward to it. Wei Shu has received it today, thank you! The letter from the king has been received, so those who are eagerly looking forward to the king are the ears of the great Tibetan. Now that the Dazang is in Chongqing, I don’t know who else is there in Kunming Can it be sold or borrowed? Wang Jiuling, the former governor of Yunnan Province, advocated Buddhism, and once asked Ouyang to give a lecture, so he suspected that there might be a place to borrow it in Kunming.” The Najun mentioned in Chen’s letter refers to Na Lianjun, the librarian of the Institute of History and Philology. Previously, the Institute of History and Philology planned to send Na’s family to Mengzi to hand over the books sent to the branch of the United University. The scriptures were taken to Mengzi together. Unexpectedly, there were no books in Kunming, and the hope was in vain.Ouyang Jingwu, whose name is Jian, and whose character is Jingwu, is also known as Master Yihuang, a native of Yihuang, Jiangxi, a famous Buddhist scholar and lay Buddhist, and an old acquaintance with Chen Yinke from the same hometown. A few days later, Mr. Na Lian came to Mengzi Yudian to hand in the books, but he was unable to open the box due to disputes over the shipping charges between the Institute of History and Philology and the General Assembly.Chen Yinke also received the catalog of Buddhist scriptures published by the Kunming Buddhist scripture circulation office sent by Lao and Chen. After seeing it, Mrs. Chen thought that there were not many buyers, so she replied on May 21: "I will send you the catalogue, begging to check and accept it, and I hope you can send me the six items listed on the right... I have been harassed many times, and I feel sorry for you. No worries, the postage cost is quite a lot (such as air mail), I hope to let you know, so that my younger brother can return it according to the number. Also, Gao went to Xunjun's manuscript and handed it back to Najun, with a reply letter, I beg to forward it to you. " On June 17, Chen Yinke sent another letter to Lao Gan and Chen Chen. This is the last book that can be found so far that Chen sent to them during his stay in Mengzi. The content is as follows: All the masterpieces have been received, and please read them carefully before returning them. The younger brother must go to Kunming in July and August. If the two brothers are not in a hurry to claim it back, the younger brother will bring it to Kunming to return it.If you need it urgently, please let me know and send it by the post office. Lian Da paid for the shipping cost of the book box and did not want to take the book out.The box has not been opened yet, so there is no book to read in Lianda. This matter can only be resolved through negotiation after Mr. Meng Zhen comes to Yunnan. The institute cannot work without books. My younger brother has also drafted two short articles recently, but there is no book to check, which can be called "fabrication". Fortunately, there are works today, but they cannot be published. The overall situation is so sad and indignant.Hasty reply. Many years later, Jiang Tianshu, a disciple of the Chen family, excerpted three letters from Chen Yinke in the "Mr. , The feelings of teaching are beyond words. After quoting the letter to Lao and Chen on June 17, Jiang Shi once noted: "At that time, my husband was wandering in the Southwest, and he was prepared for hardships. When he fled to death, he was as humble as a valley, rewarding young students, and working tirelessly. He shoulders his own shoulders with culture, and Hefen’s self-indulgence is great! The four letters are recorded, and we can see the feelings of the husband at that time. Anyone who reads the above-recorded letters will also know the depth of the anger of the husband at that time?"
