“我二人出得门来，径自又去跟蹑乔峰，遥遥望见乔峰从濬河边停靠的一艘船中出来。我们见那艘船的船身急速下沉，已一半入水，当即抢进船舱，只见谭公、谭婆夫妇和赵钱孙三人都已死在船中。这三人多半便是乔峰杀的，当真罪大恶极！我们赶回客栈，告知玄寂师兄等四位。玄寂师兄道：'说什么也不能再让乔峰杀害良善，凭我们师兄弟六人，必得阻止他再行凶作恶。'我们抢在头里，要先到山东泰安单家庄，打他个以逸待劳。我们骑了快马，比乔峰早到了片刻。可是我们到时，单家庄中已然起火，我们抢进庄去，见到铁面判官单正、他的两个儿子都已尸横就地，全庄男女数十口，或割去首级、或肩背中刀，无一得免。我们察看单正的尸身，见单正也是胸背肋骨齐断，心肺碎裂，乃是中了极刚猛的拳力而死。” 玄寂、玄垢、玄石等僧在武林中数十年来威名素著，正直无私，众所周知，他们既这么说，神山等僧听了绝无怀疑。 只见玄渡大师站起身来，说道：“方丈师兄曾派小僧前往天台山查究。智光大师确是服砒霜自尽。小僧细问那朴者和尚，他哭哭啼啼，说不知师父命他取药是要自尽，早知如此，他该用甘草粉冒充砒霜。他说有一位乔大爷和阮姑娘，确是来见过师父。师父对他们客客气气，说了好一会话，他们离开之后，才发觉师父已然圆寂。到了晚上，法身上才眼鼻流血。没想到第二天早晨，却见到师父眼珠凸出，后脑骨碎裂，却不知哪一个恶人，半夜里偷偷来残害师父法体。他说没好好保护师父法体，对不起师父，大力掌掴自己。我对他说，残害大师法体之人，武功异常了得，以极刚猛指力点了大师法身的左右太阳穴，就算你拼了命，也阻不住他。不料这朴者和尚自怨自艾，竟尔上吊死了。”说着长叹一声。 神山道：“那乔峰来见智光大师，自是要逼问雁门关外那带头大哥的姓名。智光大师不肯说，他便以'摩诃指'伤了大师。眼珠凸出，后脑骨碎裂，可不是中了'摩诃指'的情状吗？”玄慈道：“不是乔峰。”神山道：“还请方丈师兄指点其中原由。” 当年神山上人到少林寺求师，还只一十七岁。少林寺方丈灵门禅师和他接谈之下，便觉他锋芒太露，我慢贡高之气极盛，器小易盈，不是传法之人，若在寺中做个寻常僧侣，他又必不能甘居人下，日后定生事端，是以婉言相拒。神山这才投到清凉寺中，他才能杰出，只三十岁时便做了清凉寺方丈。此人聪明颖悟，算得是武林中的奇才，不过清凉寺的武学渊源远逊于少林，寺中所藏的拳经剑谱、内功秘要等等，不但为数有限，且大部分粗疏简陋，不是第一流功夫。四十多年来他内功日深，早已远远超过清凉寺上代所传武学典籍中所载，但拳剑功夫，终究有所不足，每当想起少林派的七十二项绝技，总不自禁又艳羡，又恼恨。 是以徐长老一死，便想借故来向少林寺寻衅，于是大邀帮手。但各处高僧一听说是到少林寺兴师问罪，多加推托，不肯参与，神山费了长时期水磨功夫，才邀到大相国寺、东林寺、净影寺各处名寺的高僧。 这时听玄慈方丈命人去取降魔掌与摩诃指两大绝技的典籍，心下甚喜，暗想今日当有机缘一见少林绝技的面目。玄生道：“是！”转身出殿，过不多时，便即取到，交给玄慈。大雄宝殿和藏经阁相距几达三里，玄生在片刻间便将经书取到，轻功了得，身手敏捷之极。外人不知内情，也不以为异，少林寺众僧却无不暗自赞叹。 “我二人出得门来，径自又去跟蹑乔峰，遥遥望见乔峰从濬河边停靠的一艘船中出来。我们见那艘船的船身急速下沉，已一半入水，当即抢进船舱，只见谭公、谭婆夫妇和赵钱孙三人都已死在船中。这三人多半便是乔峰杀的，当真罪大恶极！我们赶回客栈，告知玄寂师兄等四位。玄寂师兄道：'说什么也不能再让乔峰杀害良善，凭我们师兄弟六人，必得阻止他再行凶作恶。'我们抢在头里，要先到山东泰安单家庄，打他个以逸待劳。我们骑了快马，比乔峰早到了片刻。可是我们到时，单家庄中已然起火，我们抢进庄去，见到铁面判官单正、他的两个儿子都已尸横就地，全庄男女数十口，或割去首级、或肩背中刀，无一得免。我们察看单正的尸身，见单正也是胸背肋骨齐断，心肺碎裂，乃是中了极刚猛的拳力而死。” 玄寂、玄垢、玄石等僧在武林中数十年来威名素著，正直无私，众所周知，他们既这么说，神山等僧听了绝无怀疑。 只见玄渡大师站起身来，说道：“方丈师兄曾派小僧前往天台山查究。智光大师确是服砒霜自尽。小僧细问那朴者和尚，他哭哭啼啼，说不知师父命他取药是要自尽，早知如此，他该用甘草粉冒充砒霜。他说有一位乔大爷和阮姑娘，确是来见过师父。师父对他们客客气气，说了好一会话，他们离开之后，才发觉师父已然圆寂。到了晚上，法身上才眼鼻流血。没想到第二天早晨，却见到师父眼珠凸出，后脑骨碎裂，却不知哪一个恶人，半夜里偷偷来残害师父法体。他说没好好保护师父法体，对不起师父，大力掌掴自己。我对他说，残害大师法体之人，武功异常了得，以极刚猛指力点了大师法身的左右太阳穴，就算你拼了命，也阻不住他。不料这朴者和尚自怨自艾，竟尔上吊死了。”说着长叹一声。 神山道：“那乔峰来见智光大师，自是要逼问雁门关外那带头大哥的姓名。智光大师不肯说，他便以'摩诃指'伤了大师。眼珠凸出，后脑骨碎裂，可不是中了'摩诃指'的情状吗？”玄慈道：“不是乔峰。”神山道：“还请方丈师兄指点其中原由。” 当年神山上人到少林寺求师，还只一十七岁。少林寺方丈灵门禅师和他接谈之下，便觉他锋芒太露，我慢贡高之气极盛，器小易盈，不是传法之人，若在寺中做个寻常僧侣，他又必不能甘居人下，日后定生事端，是以婉言相拒。神山这才投到清凉寺中，他才能杰出，只三十岁时便做了清凉寺方丈。此人聪明颖悟，算得是武林中的奇才，不过清凉寺的武学渊源远逊于少林，寺中所藏的拳经剑谱、内功秘要等等，不但为数有限，且大部分粗疏简陋，不是第一流功夫。四十多年来他内功日深，早已远远超过清凉寺上代所传武学典籍中所载，但拳剑功夫，终究有所不足，每当想起少林派的七十二项绝技，总不自禁又艳羡，又恼恨。 是以徐长老一死，便想借故来向少林寺寻衅，于是大邀帮手。但各处高僧一听说是到少林寺兴师问罪，多加推托，不肯参与，神山费了长时期水磨功夫，才邀到大相国寺、东林寺、净影寺各处名寺的高僧。 这时听玄慈方丈命人去取降魔掌与摩诃指两大绝技的典籍，心下甚喜，暗想今日当有机缘一见少林绝技的面目。玄生道：“是！”转身出殿，过不多时，便即取到，交给玄慈。大雄宝殿和藏经阁相距几达三里，玄生在片刻间便将经书取到，轻功了得，身手敏捷之极。外人不知内情，也不以为异，少林寺众僧却无不暗自赞叹。 那两部经书纸质黄中发黑，显是年代久远。玄慈将经书放上方桌，说道：“众位师兄请看，两部经书中各自叙明创功的经历，以及功法的要旨。”说着将《降魔掌法》与《摩诃指秘要》两部抄本分别交给神山上人和观心大师。两人恭谨接过翻阅，见序文中述说两门神功创建的由来，“降魔掌”为少林寺第八代方丈元元大师所创，出掌轻柔，若有若无。“摩诃指法”则是在少林寺挂单四十年的七指头陀所创，因系外来头陀，功法与少林派传统功夫大不相同，纯走刚猛路子，书中谆谆告诫，凡已练少林佛门柔功者决不可练，否则内息极易走岔，如师承照护不善，难免呕血，重伤难治。 玄慈方丈待二僧看了一会，将抄本传交道清、觉贤二位大师，等六僧都看了序文，说道：“各位大师，敝寺虽有七十二项绝技，但一来每一项功法均极难练，纵是天资卓异之人，一生亦不易练成一项，何况各项绝技练到精处高处，总之不过在武学上胜人一筹而已，既能以甲门功夫胜人，便不必再以乙门功夫胜人，至于丙门、丁门，更加不必去练了。敝寺历代祖师传法授徒，均以佛法为首，武学为末，僧众若孜孜专研武功，于佛法的参悟修为必定有碍。就算是俗家弟子，敝寺也向来不教他修炼一门绝技以上，以免他贪多务得，深中贪毒。乔峰曾由玄苦师弟授以'降魔掌'，玄苦师弟自己不会'摩诃指法'，乔峰亦未跟别的少林僧学过武功，此节老衲深知，决无错误。本寺玄字辈师兄弟以及下一辈武功较高的僧侣，大都自罗汉拳学起，学到降魔掌或般若掌而止。老衲在四十岁上见猎心喜，学了大金刚拳，内力走了刚猛路子，自此练般若掌便生窒碍，至今好生后悔。”
突然外面一个清朗的声音远远传来，说道：“诸位高僧相聚少林寺讲论武功，实乃盛事。小僧能否有缘做个不速之客，在旁恭聆双方高见么？”一字一句，清清楚楚地送入了各人耳中。声音来自山门之外，入耳如此清晰，却又中正平和，并不震人耳鼓，说话者内功之高之纯，可想而知；而他身在远处，却又如何得闻殿中讲论？ 玄慈微微一怔，便运内力说道：“既是佛门同道，便请光临。”又道：“玄鸣、玄石两位师弟，请代我迎接嘉宾。”玄鸣、玄石二人躬身道：“是！”刚转过身来，待要出殿，门外那人已道：“迎接是不敢当。今日得会高贤，委实不胜之喜。” 他每说一句，声音便近了数丈，刚说完“之喜”两个字，大殿门口已出现了一位宝相庄严的中年僧人，双手合十，面露微笑，说道：“吐蕃国山僧鸠摩智，参见少林寺方丈。” 群僧见到他如此身手，本是惊异之极，待听他自己报名，许多人都“哦”的一声，说道：“原来是吐蕃国师大轮明王到了！” 玄慈站起身来，抢上两步，合十躬身，说道：“国师远来东土，实乃有缘。”便为神山、观心、道清等客来大师，玄寂、玄渡等少林高辈僧侣逐一引见。 众僧相见罢，玄慈在正中设了一个座位，请鸠摩智就座。鸠摩智略一谦逊，便即坐了，这一来，他是坐在神山的上首。旁人倒也没什么，神山却暗自不忿：“你这番僧装神弄鬼，未必便有什么真实本领，待会倒要试你一试。” 鸠摩智道：“小僧适才在山门外听到玄慈大师讲论武功，宏法高论，深受教益，只其中一节，小僧却不敢苟同。”玄慈道：“敬请国师指点开示。” 鸠摩智微微一笑，说道：“方丈大师言道，少林寺纵使是俗家弟子，也往往不教他修习一门以上的绝技，以免他贪多务得，深中贪毒。但以小僧愚见，少林寺这项规矩，只怕是太死板了些，限制了才智卓绝之士上窥高深武学之路。在这规矩之下，只怕少林七十二绝技难以发扬光大，再过得千百年，不免仍是如此这般。就拿'摩诃指'和'般若掌'两项绝技来说，其实两者兼通，又有何难？就算一人身兼七十二门绝技，也并非决无可能。”他娓娓说来，似乎心平气和，但话中之意，显已对少林武学心生藐视。少林群僧听了，均感不忿。 玄生朗声道：“据国师所言，有人以一身而能兼通敝派七十二门绝技？”鸠摩智点头道：“不错！”玄生道：“敢问国师，这位大英雄是谁？”鸠摩智道：“大英
