这一来，红发老祖自然怒上加怒，忿火中烧。因自负法力高强，差一点的人遇上，觉着胜之不武，轻视来人，不屑动手，只命众妖徒上前，自然要差得多。二人去得冒失，临机却尚机警，一见形势不好，大出意料，立打逃走主意。本身法力虽非红发老祖之敌，那几件法宝却大有威力。斗不一会儿，便将两件最厉害的法宝取出，一面迎敌，一面防身，冷不防突围飞去。等红发老祖看出那法宝来历，大吃一惊，知道门人决难取胜。正待变化元神，下手擒拿，人已遁去，忙率众追赶出去。以红发老祖法力本可赶上，哪知刚追不远，便由斜刺里飞来一道青光，长虹也似横亘天半，将路阻住。定睛一看，正是那法宝的主人，手指青虹，冷着一张怪脸，停空呆视，也不发话，只不放过去。知道此是旁门散仙中惟一人物，脾气古怪，有通天彻地之能，向不问人间事，不知怎会收此二徒。如与为敌，立有身败名裂之忧。此散仙又向不听人分说，只要出头，便强到底，无可理喻，万万招惹不得。红发老祖又惊又慌，无可如何，只得强忍忿怒，垂头丧气回去。青光一瞥即隐。门下徒党也随后追到，红发老祖推说没有追上，闷闷回山，越想越气。先以为此仇万不可报，又不便对门人说明，空自愧忿了好几年。
这日出游，路遇追云叟白谷逸，无心谈起受人欺负。追云叟笑答：“这两个老怪物行迹诡秘，我虽和你一样算不出他们的动静，但是他们决不会收这类徒弟。不能因来人用他法宝，便算拜师，我想其中必有原因。此人难得出动，上次许是正值出游，适逢其会；也是你那几个令高足背师犯规，该有此报。来人虽是狂妄，此时再去寻他，胜了也是羞辱，越做越无趣，就此拉倒了吧。”一面又历举那散仙的为人和近年行径心迹。追云叟无心之言，意在讽劝。红发老祖复仇之心本盛，姚、洪二妖徒恰又随行听去，回山后师徒计议，再试一回，看那散仙还出面不。便令二妖徒四出寻访仇人下落。本意法宝难敌，寻到仇人归报，亲往报复。
方、元二人逃时，不知有人暗助，始得脱险。因树了强敌，不敢再在近处觅地栖身，又往回走，连经过好些山水，不是不合意，便有别的顾虑。最后在四川大邑县西八十里凤凰山中，找到了一处石洞，地极幽静，相隔城镇又不甚远，便中还可修积善功，便住了下来。先防仇人追寻，轻易不出，行动极为隐秘。一晃数年，并无朕兆，渐渐疏懈下来。因为日久用功，道家元婴也自炼就。日常行法闭洞入定，在山中神游。先还是一人留守，日久元婴渐固，时常结伴同出。又是一年过去。渐渐炼到婴儿能携法宝应用。眼看再有两年，便可运用玄功，变化自如，瞬息千里，无远弗届，纵遇有人为难，也无败理。哪知仇人忽然寻上门来，二人事前毫无觉察。因山中有一仙树场，住有二三十户人家，年前遭受瘟疫，由二人治愈，救了全村性命。当地又有一株紫柏，大有十围，亭亭若盖，荫被数亩，相传乃古仙人遗留。又有清溪流水，近岭遥山，岚光树色，相映成趣，风景佳绝。场上人家俱都姓卫，世业耕读，幼童甚多，设有公塾。每当夕阳在山，明月未上，村童放学，群嬉于树旁清溪白石之间，别有一种天真之趣。这些儿童又都家规极好，举止不俗，山水灵气所钟，相貌多半美秀。内有一双兄妹，年约十三四，更是聪明灵秀，动人爱怜。方、元二人闲中无事，每喜引逗群儿为乐，隔些日总去一次，习以为常。去时，总是先往城市买些果饵，前往分散。被妖徒发现，也由于此。
二妖徒各带一二门人，分作两起寻访。这一起共是三人，以姚开江为首，还同有一个最工心计之妖徒秦玠。因知二人法力高强，惟恐难敌，先不出面，只在暗中窥伺，终于探出二人所炼元婴尚未十分凝固，不时出游。便设毒计，乘元神他出之际，暗入洞中，把两具法身毁掉，剩下两个火候未到的元婴，岂不手到成功？
二人因连日元婴渐凝，连与群儿嬉游，均非原身。好在村人均受过救命之恩，知是神仙中人，见惯不以为奇，又受过嘱咐，不为传扬，相处已久。这日又是元婴前往，正赶上最爱的两小兄妹一时无知，各吃了一枚异果，双双死去。因未见有余果，只听传说，心爱二童过甚，匆匆不暇查看，也认为误服蛇衔毒果，放下城里买来的果子，便即飞回，取药救治。路上二人忽然心动，元婴飞行绝快，相隔又近，眨眼将到。遥望洞门大开，正有三个着红半臂的妖人，两个手挽自己人头，由内急走出来，重将洞门封闭，隐伏在侧。二人不禁
