玄真子因妙一真人适迎神僧时，曾向晓月禅师行礼，不曾理睬，看出他屡遭挫败，不特怙过不悛，故态依然，反倒因此羞恼成怒，愈发变本加厉，心蕴怨毒，誓不两立，故意借受佛法禁制，假装痴呆。似此叛道忘本，执迷不悟的败类，师命尊严，即念同门之情，也是爱莫能救，不便再与多言。见天蒙、白眉就座，略微接谈，各自低眉端坐，宝相庄严，意若有事，便向芬陀大师请问经过。大师答道：“此人真不可救药。叛师背道，罪已难逭。近去南疆，为报前仇，竟炼了极恶毒的邪法，并勾结番僧哈哈和一些邪魔妖道，来与诸位道友为仇，被白眉师兄佛法所制。我因念在以前曾有数面之缘，念他到令师门下苦心修为，能有今日也非容易，以为他也是有道之士，怎便为了一念贪嗔，甘趋下流，不知顺逆利害，到了力竭势穷，行遭惨劫之际，还不回头觉醒？于是力向白眉师兄缓颊，略加劝诫，便即放走。他刚一走，天蒙师兄便用佛法隐晦神光，移形幻相。我问何故，二位师兄齐说，此人近来入邪日深，为魔所制，为逞一己之私，多行不义，已是丧心病狂，无法挽救，行即反恩为仇，不久仍要约请厉害妖邪，前来报复为祟。依他本意，颠覆峨眉以后，我们三人中，只我似乎好欺。适我放他，为的是免被白眉师兄押送此间，多受一场屈辱，并还免受那玉匣飞刀斩首之劫。他不但不知感恩，反想仗着邪魔之力，乘我门人不在，孤身入定之时，突然发难，前往暗算。事成固是称心，如若被我发觉，来的妖徒自难免于诛戮，正好就此激引轩辕老怪等为首邪魔，全力寻我三人作对。我听二位师兄之言，还以为他纵然悖谬，还不致如此胆大昏愚。及至默运玄机，细一参详，居然半点不差。到了今日傍午，他果约了几个比较伎俩多一点的妖邪回来，因为佛法所迷，虚实两皆误认，自投罗网。同来妖党，只两个数限未到的见机遁走，余者均被我除去。他也受了佛法禁制，被我擒来。此乃是白眉师兄为践昔年对令师的前约，有意假手于我。至于如何处治，乃是贵派家法与令师遗命，悉听尊便，不与我三人相干了。”
话刚说完，忽听玱然鸣玉之声。那藏飞刀的玉匣，本奉长眉真人遗命，在开府以后，藏在中元殿顶一个壁凹以内，这时突自开裂，飞出一柄飞刀。那刀只有尺许长，一道光华，寒光闪闪，冷气森森，耀眼侵肌。先由殿顶飞出，疾逾电掣，绕殿一周之后，略停了停，然后忽沉忽浮，缓缓往晓月禅师立处飞去。晓月禅师本是面带愧忿，垂首低眉，经妙一真人揖让，坐在三位僧尼左侧，虽为佛法所禁，不能自脱，到底在正邪两派俱都修炼多年，有了极深造诣，法力高强。本派中人，苦行头陀已经成道，深知天蒙、白眉二位神僧，决不会亲手杀他；芬陀大师也只将人交到为止，谅必不肯加害。此外能致自己死命的，只有玄真子和妙一真人二人。余者连白、朱、乙、凌诸仙宾都算上，不是势均力敌，难分高下；便是至多法力较高，要想伤害自己元神，仍是极难。这些仇敌都有声望，自视甚高，不肯众人合力对付一人。这个僭当教主的仇人，即便不念以前同门之谊，当着开府盛典，各方仙宾云集之际，也必要假仁假义，决不肯于当众加害。只有偏心薄情的前师所留玉匣飞刀，厉害无比。能抵挡此宝的，只有前古共工氏用太乙元精和万年寒晶融合淬炼的断玉钩。此钩现在身上，随心动念，便可飞出迎御。仇人既不肯当众下手，芬陀又只将己禁住，不令逃遁，法力仍在。来时，听白眉口气，好似自己还有后文，不致便遭劫数。便照形势情理来断，这些新旧仇敌，万不至于因见飞刀无效，重又合力下手，置己于死地。断定此来不过受些屈辱，并无凶险。本来早遭劫兵解，凭自己道行法力，转世修为，一样速成，并还可以不必再转人生，当时寻一好庐舍，立可重生修炼。不过仇敌法力功候太高，再行转劫，功力相差，更难追步，此仇越发难报。再者本身修为，煞非容易，现己脱胎换骨，炼就元婴，只为一朝之忿，误入歧途。因前在南疆，与哈哈老祖斗法不胜，拜在他的门下，妄以为可以成仙，报仇雪恨，自为教祖，偿那平日心愿。一步走错，便以错就错到底，渐致仇怨日深，江河日下，无法再返本来。如若当年不动贪嗔，独自虔修，本可炼到天仙地位。就是现在忘本趋邪，只不过不能飞升灵空仙界，又多了道家一次四九重劫，仙业仍然有望。这原来肉体怎舍弃去，为此只有忍辱含垢，等自己脱身以后，准备再用多年薪胆之功，一拼死活。
晓月心虽如此想法，而对前师法力素所深知，自己的悖逆颠倒，多行不义，也不是不知其非。尽管受了哈哈妖师魔法暗制，当紧要关头，知道本门法规尊严，言必应验，因而也是有点心惊胆怯，不敢十分自信。昔年长眉真人所留玉匣飞刀家法，以及另外一些简箧遗示，多半俱当众弟子的面，封存收藏，尽管到时始得出现拜观，不知内容，形式全都见过。入殿落座，暗中留神观察，俱无影迹。玄真子只向芬陀大师问询前情，好似事前尚不知悉，否则玉匣早已请出，陈列殿中相待，哪有如此从容暇逸？照此情形，分明因为吉日灵辰，盛会当前，不愿以旧日同门来开杀戒，乐得假充好人。并还想到，叛教的人被外人擒送到此，如不经过处治，任其从容而去，决无此理，至少也要经过一番做作才是。也许仇敌心狠狡诈，既不便当众下手，为盛会杀风景；又好不容易擒到，不舍放脱为以后大患。表面假仁假义，已将玉匣取出，假作顾念前情，仗着外人法力禁制，不能脱身，留此解劝，或是稍微拘禁，便自悔悟。等到会后人去，再将玉匣飞刀请出，能杀便推在师父遗留的家法威力；不能，再行合力加害，必欲杀己为快，以免飞刀为断玉钩所破，有损长眉威严，并还放走仇敌，留下未来心腹之患。主意真个再毒没有。转不如拿话给他叫破，免中暗算。
晓月正在胡思乱想，忽见飞刀突在殿顶出现，他自是识货，觉出以前亲见封刀入匣时，虽觉神物灵异，并无如此威力。枉自费尽心力，炼成一柄断玉钩，自信十分能敌。这时两两相较，分明仅能勉强阻挡，不特结局只能缓死须臾，并非敌手，甚至连元神婴儿也为所斩，无能幸免。心胆立寒，不禁悔恨交集。见飞刀电掣，转了一圈，朝己飞来。尺许长一道银光，精芒四射，直似一泓秋水，悬在空中。前面若有极大阻力，其行绝缓。忧惧危疑中，一眼瞥见妙一真人夫妇目注飞刀，面有笑容，大有得意快心之状。
中座天蒙禅师，正在低眉入定。连他所抱三岁童婴，也在他怀中闭目合睛，端容危坐，相随入定，迥不似初入仙府，青瞳灼灼，东张西望，活泼天真之状。晓月心中恶毒至极，无从发泄。在座诸人法力高强，一击不中，徒自取辱。因来时天蒙、白眉中途忽离去了好一会儿，回来便抱个婴儿。听他三人对谈，此子竟是仇人前九世的亲生之子，与天蒙极深渊源。初世便在佛门，因受父母三十九年钟爱，父母年已八十，忽遇天蒙禅师度化出家。后来功行精进，万缘皆空，只有亲恩难报，不能断念，为此誓发宏愿，欲凭自己多生修积，助父母修成仙佛，方成佛门正果。由此苦行八世，俱是从小出家。那前生父母，便是仇人夫妇。因是本身好善，积德累功，终于归入玄门，成就今日仙业。此子虽算完了心愿，但是过去诸生，除头一世在天蒙禅师门下外，余均苦行修持，寿终圆寂，并无多高法力。又以时缘未至，终未见到父母一面。直到现今九世，投生在一个多子的善人家中，名叫李洪。天蒙禅师才去那家，暗地度化而来，一为使他父子重逢，二为自己功行圆满，几桩心愿已了，不日飞升。而此子此生，须将以前诸生所发宏愿一齐修积完满，并还随时助他父母光大门户，直到飞升灵空仙界，始能证果。当此异派云起之际，非有一位法力高强的佛家师父不可，故此带了回来。看他这时入定神气，晓月误以为天蒙禅师正用佛法度此婴儿，使他元神坚凝，日后易于成道，暗忖：“仇人真个阴毒可恶。本是同门至交，因夺了我教主之位，才致今日惨状。现我狼狈至此，毫无动念，反以速死为快。听老秃驴说，此子日后于他发扬光大，大有助益。反正难免兵解，倒不如趁此时机，将此子杀死，就势拼着原法身不要，再去投生转世。一面用断玉钩敌住飞刀，不使刀光照顶，先用飞剑自行兵解，好歹出一点怨气。仇敌虽多高明，此举突然发动，又当自己势迫危临之际，人所不防，只要下手神速，未必便达不到；即或无成，仍是兵解，也无别的害处。”想到这里，恶念顿生。说时迟，那时快，晓月念头一转，默运玄功，心念所向，身旁断玉钩便化成两钩金红色极强烈的光华，互相交尾飞出，直朝婴儿飞去。其势比电还疾，法宝又极厉害，相隔又这么近，似此突然发难，便有大法力的人遇上，多半惊惶失措，难于抵御。在座诸仙宾，多半不知此中底细，俱觉此举太狠，激于义愤，知道救已无及，好几位都在厉声呼叱，待要下手。口刚一开，忽见钩光到处，婴儿顶门上突升起一朵金莲花，竟将钩光托住。婴儿一双漆黑有光的炯炯双瞳，也自睁开，一点也不害怕，反伸出一双赛雪似霜的小胖手，不住向上作势连招，似想将钩取下，却不敢之状。天蒙禅师随睁眼喝道：“洪儿，你将来防身御魔，尚无利器。适才怜你年幼，已将你多生修积功力还原，并赐你我佛门中的大金刚愿力。你既想在证果以前借用此宝，便即取下，何必迟疑？”婴儿答声：“弟子遵命，敬谢恩师。”随说，小手一抓，宝光立化为一柄非金非玉、形制奇古、长约二尺的连柄双钩，落到手里。
婴儿这时已经天蒙禅师点化，洞彻夙因。钩取到手以后，立即纵身下地，直朝妙一真人夫妇奔去，眼蕴泪珠，喜滋滋跪在地上，叩头不止。真人夫妇早知来因，随命起立，等到事完，再向诸道长礼拜。妙一夫人随手便抱了起来。
且不提多生再遇的母子亲爱。只说那晓月禅师一见婴儿头顶现出金莲，法宝无功，大吃一惊。忙运玄功收回，已被天蒙禅师施展无边佛法，相助婴儿收去，再也收它不回。本就难于幸免，此举残忍，更犯众怒。如不早自打点，就许形神皆灭，再转人生，俱都无望。万分惶急中，欲放飞刀自行兵解时，哪知天蒙禅师话还未和婴儿说完，就这一睁眼的工夫，那柄飞刀本是飞来极缓，这时竟比初现时飞得还快，连放飞剑自杀都来不及。晓月这里断玉钩没有收回来，刚试得一试，飞刀已电掣而至，到了离头丈许，倏地展开，化为一片三丈方圆光幕，将全身罩住，外圈渐有下垂之势。知道厉害，刀光只要往下一围，不特通体立即粉碎，化为一股白烟消灭，连血肉都不会有残余，便自身婴儿元神，也同时化为乌有。想要自裁兵解，势已不能。晓月禅师枉自修炼功深，饶有神通变化，平日妄自狂傲，不肯低首下心向人，到此存亡绝续，危机瞬息的境地，也是心寒体颤，六神皆震。情知长眉真人仙法神奇，在座诸仙谁也解它不得。便是乞怜求饶，也无用处。情急之下，顿生悔心。这时只恨孽由己作，用尽心机，先期百计防范，到头来依然难逃显戮。料定不免于难，便把双目闭上，暗运玄功，打算死中求活，将元神缩小，静俟飞刀上身时，乘隙将元神遁走，作那万一之想。同时默求师父，恩施格外，特赐原宥，只使身受诛戮，不要伤及元神，便是万幸。本心元神不敢即出，战战兢兢，潜伏待机。满拟刀光四外一合，便即了账。但有丝毫空隙，无论何处，均可变化逃走。正在忧惊颤抖，不知如何是好，等了一会儿，不见飞刀近身，耳听众仙求情之声。虽然自觉许有生机，惟恐一时疏神，刀光突然合拢，元神不及遁逃，形神皆灭。存心戒惧，认作一发千钧，仍持前念，不敢骤然睁目，分了心神，并遭仇敌耻笑。暗将飞剑紧护元神，潜伏左臂腋下，准备刀光透体时，奋力一挡，略微冲荡开一丝缝隙，飞剑虽未必能保，元神或可幸免。
晓月准备停当，仍无动静，方始略微分心静听，果是玄真子、妙一真人诸旧同门师兄弟，在那里代向长眉真人求恩原恕。大意说他叛道背师，投身邪教，忘恩反复，多行不义，该正家法，予以显戮。但他当初只是一念之差，并未为恶。后受邪魔诱迫，迷途不返，日趋堕落，不能自拔，并非出自本心。加之贪嗔之念太重，遭受挫折，有激而发。虽彼执迷不悟，一半也由于弟子等德薄能鲜，不知善处，感化无方，以至今日，为此引咎，情愿分任其责。敬乞恩师大发鸿慈，并看在三位老禅师面上，念他相随多年，能到今日，大非容易。前在本门，实无大过。特降殊恩，姑且原宥，暂免刑诛，予以最后一条自新之路。晓月禅师听出语气纯诚，并非卖好做作。又知此刀乃师留本门家法，便几个道行最高的旧同门，如玄真子、妙一真人等三数人犯了教规，一样受刑，无力避免。先还当前古至宝断玉钩专破飞剑飞刀，可以抵御。谁知师父法力仙机神妙莫测，一经相对，仍是相形见绌，万非其敌。照飞刀的神异威力，谁也阻它不住。按说在眨眼之间，早已应劫上身，怎会虚悬？只觉寒气森森，逼人肌发，尚未下合，不是数限未到，便是师父允了众人求恩原宥之请；即或不然，也好趁这将落未落之际，查看一条出路。似此闭目等死，岂非胆小太过，弄巧反倒误事，更是冤枉。
晓月念头一转，忙即睁眼一看，一干旧同门俱朝飞刀跪下，求告将终。随侍四弟子俱未在侧。在座一二十位仙宾，除白眉、芬陀、媖姆、优昙、李静虚在座前站立外，俱都回
