萧逸忙往竹园中跑去，身未近前，见祭烛已熄，雷二娘似已他去。心方一动，忽一阵积雪群飞，绕身乱转。昏林之中，仿佛有一鬼影闪动，不由激灵灵打了一个冷战。当时只觉肌肤起粟，毛发根根欲起。因是素来胆壮，略微惊讶，以为偶然风起，一时眼花，没甚在意，仍然踏雪疾行。跑到供桌前一看，二娘不知何往。所有香烛供品，全都被人发怒掷碎，烛泪油腥，满桌狼藉。烛本长大，残烛约有小半支，与临回房时所剩差不多少，仿佛自己才回房不久的事。如是鬼神显灵，二娘尚在，不会不来奔告。即便怕冷回房，也应通知，为何不在？心正惊疑，忽又一阵阴风，起自身后，似有一只冷冰冰鬼手，又凉又尖向后脑抓来。萧逸本在疑神疑鬼，再经这一下，不禁吓了一跳。仗着身法轻快，刚觉有异，哪敢回看，忙即向前纵去。纵出老远，觉未追来，方始奓着胆子，回头细看。只见雪深没膝，茫茫一片，风已停歇，哪有鬼的影子。一见身陷雪内，知逃时用力太猛，落地竟未提气。凭自己本领，就有鬼何妨，何致望风惊心，这般胆小？Can't laughing.继而想：“适才明明有一物触脑，并非积雪竹枝这类。”一奇怪，不禁把头往上一抬，猛瞥见果有一条鬼影悬身空际，背向自己，两手一张，依竹而立，心中大惊。一摸身旁，一样兵器未带，正发急间，渐觉那鬼呆立竹间，悬空不动，背影看去颇熟。同时天上雪花飘飘，又下了起来。猛地想起前事，定睛一看，果如所料，脱口喊了声：“雷二娘！”忙纵过去，果是雷二娘，业已吊在一根高竹竿上，这一惊非同小可。本想解救，可是一查看，见二娘吊的是她随身丝绦，系在竹竿中间有横枝处，长舌外伸，手舞足张，死状甚惨，并且离地有一人高，竹竿冰冻坚滑，不易攀援。凭二娘本领，决纵不上去。估量两番祷祝，自吐真情，再看供物和香火的零乱翻倒之状，定是遭了鬼戮。否则她性情柔和，与人无忤，村中素无外人，谁来害她？料死已久，定救不转。这一来，越料爱妻中了她的阴谋。反恨她死得太早，没有全吐真情，聚集村人，明正其罪。想起昔日夫妻恩情，不由又望空哀号一阵。因己立身为人，素得村人敬重，虽然无虑，终不愿亲手去解。忙赶回后院，将厨婢工人唤醒，将尸首解下，停在她的房内。雪已愈下愈大了。 次日萧逸召集村人，说妻室出走，久无音信，疑已野死，昨晚是她失踪之日，特就当年自尽之处，望空遥祭，携子女先归；雷二娘留后撤祭，忽然自尽，吊死竹林之中，死状甚奇，想是遇邪等语。村人俱知二娘对于萧氏夫妻父子，最为忠诚，相处更好，平日提起，老是赞不绝口，毫无可死之道。吊死的所在，凭二娘决上不去。俱猜竹林闹鬼，并连欧阳霜之死，也由于此。叹息了一阵，俱都不疑有人暗害。萧逸对二娘虽然不无疑忿，因事未询明，遽死非命，念在多年服劳操持之勤，依然给她从优埋葬。 经这一来，仔细回忆爱妻生平心地为人，越断定她死得冤屈。又想到爱妻既将仇人活捉了去，可见仙人救去的事，是出于小孩梦呓，昏迷之言，无可凭信。想望一穷，不由悲从中来，愧悔无地。加以二娘身死，家务俱要亲理，小孩缺人照料；三小兄妹更因慈母不归，仙灵毫无感应，虽未哭哭啼啼，牵衣索母，总是愁眉泪眼，絮问归期。有时放学回来，随定乃父，围炉谈笑，论文说武。正说得好好的，方觉天伦之乐，略解愁烦，内中一个想起，只问得一句：“妈到底要哪天回来呀？”话才脱口，那两个跟着笑容顿敛，潸然欲涕，立把满室春气，化成愁云惨雾。又不知要费若干口舌，才能使他们止泪含酸，不欢而睡。小孩家纯然一片天真，三小兄妹虽听乃父和村人露出乃母已经野死，过了当年，就要告庙设主的信息，依然执意不信，断定乃母仙去，总会有日归来。只是孺慕太深，苦思不已，哀而不伤，悲而不痛。但惟其希望未绝，故此常时都在盼想，也容易放落，事过便忘。一会儿想起，又复情殷乃母，啼泪纵横。日常如此。 萧逸本已悲深心碎，触绪伤怀，不能自已，哪里再经得起这三个爱儿爱女至性至情磨折和无人理家的烦扰，闹得终日愁索心病，凄然欲死。只半月工夫，人便消瘦了好多，连武艺都无法传授了。畹秋虽然阴险狠毒，用情却极专笃。见他悲苦，先疑下手稍慢，二娘或已泄露。嗣经仔细查探，竟似疑心乃妻死于二娘之手，奸谋已遂，宽心大放。想起萧逸绝好一个家庭，只为自己一念之忿，害得他这等光景，不由又怜惜起来。除每日同了丈夫、女儿及萧元夫妻前往宽解陪伴外，顺便并代指挥下人，料理家政，渐渐有了条理。又因年事将近，一切均为部署周详。萧逸见她诸事井井有条，自己已不似二娘初死时那般事必躬亲，杂乱琐细，身心交
