这日齐世杰在九曲十八弯的峡谷之中信步所至，希望能够碰上他的“老向导”连甘沛。不知不觉到了中午时分，人没找着，水源也没发现。他是清早从石罅之中渗出的水珠滴了几滴人口，就不耐烦再等下去。这几滴水珠不过仅能润一润他的喉咙，此时早已嘴巴里干得冒烟了。
正当他彷徨焦急之际，忽听得访佛有流水潺潺之声。齐世杰精神一振，连忙伏地听声，确定了方向之后，便去觅那水源。
眼睛一亮，果然发现了一条山涧。而且在山涧旁边，他还发现了一个人。
这个人是大吉法师，他正在用他那个穿了一个小洞的紫金钵盛水来喝。
他本以为大吉法师那天跨上了坐骑，是应该早已逃出了峡谷的，想不到还能碰上他。不过只是他一个人，他那匹马可不见了。
原来大吉法师这次也是靠连甘沛作向导才敢到通古斯峡来的，失去了连甘沛，他也就像齐世杰一样，找不到出路。他内力深湛，可以忍受饥渴，他那匹马可抵受不起，三天没有水喝，已是奄奄待毙，不能再骑了。大吉法师只好抛弃了它，自己来找水源。
大吉法师发现了齐世杰，这一惊更是非同小可！
“好小子，你竟然冤魂不息，缠上我啦！好呀，你既不肯放过我，我唯有与你拚命！今日不是你死，便是我亡！”大吉法师跳将起来，金钵的水泼了满地，横杖当胸，摆出迎敌姿态。
齐世杰笑道：“大和尚，我不是来找你麻烦的，只要你不想杀我，我为何与你拚命？”
大吉法师松了口气，说道：“你为何还在这里？”齐世杰道：“我迷了路。”大吉道：“他怎么不带你出去？难道你没有和他交谈，就把他杀了？”
齐世杰知道大吉说的这个“他”就是假名“唐不知”的那个少年，当下说道：“我和他说过，不过他已经走了。”
大吉法师更为惊异，说道：“你们既然曾经交谈，那么你们应该知道彼此是谁了，怎的他还会独自走呢？”
齐世杰心中一动，连忙说道：“大吉法师，我正想问你，你这位朋友是谁？”
大吉法师道：“他连姓名都没有告诉你么？”
齐世杰道：“说是说了，不过他说他叫'唐不知'，我想这多半是假名吧？”
大吉法师道：“你有没有把自己的真名实姓，先告诉他？”齐世杰道：“一罢手不斗，我就向他通名了。我又不是什么奢拦人物，何须对他隐瞒实姓真名。”
大吉法师道：“他知道你是齐世杰之后，还是自称'不知'么？”齐世杰道：“是呀，他说他是个孤儿，是以不知自己身世。”
大吉法师哈哈笑道：“唐不知，唐不知，他以前或许不知，见了你是应该知道了，怎的还说'不知'，倒是把我弄得也糊涂了！”
齐世杰道：“他到底姓甚名谁，赶快告诉我。”他急于知道，目光似有棱角的盯着大吉法师发问，把大吉法师吓得登时不敢发笑。
“你跑来回疆，为的是找什么人？”大吉法师反问他道。
齐世杰道，“大和尚，你这是明知故问了吧？我不相信你那伙伴连甘沛还没告诉你，我要找的是我的表弟杨炎。”
大吉法师缓缓说道：“那个自称'唐不知'的少年，就正是你要找寻的表弟杨炎！”
齐世杰大吃一惊，失声叫道：“他是杨炎。此话当真？”
大吉法师说道：“我何必骗你？实不相瞒，那天我就是恐怕疏不间亲，所以他一和你交手，我就急急忙忙逃跑的。”
原来那日他打不过齐世杰，恰值杨炎来到，他知道杨炎和齐世杰是未见过面的表兄弟，是以在危急关头，只能请杨炎替他抵挡一下。但心想他们始终会知道彼此是谁的，一旦他们说开之后，只怕他们表兄弟就要联手转过头来对付自己了。
齐世杰呆了片刻，叫道：“既然他是杨炎，为什么他不肯认我，为什么他独自跑开？”
大吉法师道：“你问我，我怎么知道？”
齐世杰双眼火红，说道：“好，那你把你知道的有关杨炎的事情都告诉我！”
大吉法师不知齐杨之间曾经闹过甚么事，以致杨炎不肯认亲。见齐世杰好像发狂似的盯着他问，不觉心里有点害怕，暗自想道：“前天我和这小子交手之时，曾经声言要杀他的，我可不敢相信这小子就肯如此轻易的放过了我。他问出所以然来，只怕就要施辣手了。”
怯意一生，登时动了三十六着走为上着的念头，施展缓兵之计，说道：“你是来找水源的吧？坐下来先歇一歇，喝够了水，我再尽我所知，告诉你好不好？”
齐世杰嘴里正干得直冒烟，心中异常烦躁，一半原因也是由于缺水而起，听他提起一个“水”字，不觉瞿然一省，面对着清凉的山水，如何还能忍耐，便道：“好，我喝了水，抹一把脸再来问你。”
他把脑袋浸入山涧里，一阵清凉的感觉有说不出的舒服，忽地发现水中已不见有大吉法师的倒影，抬起头来，只见大吉法师拔步飞奔，此时已在转入一个山坳。
齐世杰匆匆忙忙喝了几口涧水，便跑去追。大声叫道：“你若是不肯把杨炎的事情告诉我，那也罢了。咱们都要找寻出路，作个伴也好一些！”
大吉法师冷笑道：“你们汉人有句俗话：'明知不是伴，事急且相随。'要是你认识道路，或许我会事急相随。如今你是自身难保，我用不着倚靠你，干嘛还要和你作伴？”冷笑声中，他跑得更加快了。
齐世杰的轻功本来在他之上，但一来起步较迟，二来地形复杂，到他转过峡谷之时，大吉法师早已不知跑到哪里去了。
大吉法师躲过了齐世杰的追踪，正在胡乱找寻出路之际，忽听得蹄声得得自远而近。
“难道是连甘沛不见我出峡谷，他在附近牧场买了马匹，又再回来找我？若然如此，还算有点良心。”他抱着喜出望外的心情，急忙迎上前去。
蹄声在他面前戛然而止，这霎那间，大吉法师和那骑者都不觉“啊呀”一声叫了起来。
来的不是连甘沛，是一个妙龄女子。他认识这个女子，这个女子也认识他。原来正是跑来通古斯峡找寻齐世杰的天山女侠冷冰儿。
大吉法师吃惊未已，冷冰儿已在冷笑喝问：“真是人生何处不相逢，想不到一别数年，又在这里碰上你这位大和尚。哼，真人面前不说假话，大和尚，你跑来这里干什么？”
大吉法师怒道：“凭你这小丫头也配审问我么，贫僧云游四海，喜欢上那儿就上那儿。你来得这里我为什么不能来得？”
冷冰儿哼了一声，冷冷说道：“你不说我也知道！”
大吉法师倒是不觉一愕，说道：“你知道了什么？”
冷冰儿道：“好，我就替你说出来吧。你是杨炎约你来的，为的是要谋杀齐世杰！我说的是也不是。”
大吉法师那知她说的这个“杨炎”和他日前碰上的杨炎根本就不是一个人，听了不禁一惊，心想：“她猜的虽然没有全对，但看来她知道的也是当真不少了！”
冷冰儿之所以有此猜测，亦非无因而至。原来大吉法师虽是神僧奢罗法师的大弟子，位居同门之长，但赋性却与乃师不同，非但未能勘破色空，名利得失之心且还甚重。昔年他在拉萨作布达拉宫的客座“经师”之时，曾与当时清廷派驻拉萨的大内高手卫托平过从甚密，互相利用。那次天竺两神僧率领众弟子上天山与天山派的老掌门唐经天“切磋武学”，就是受他的鼓动的，而在他背后策划此事的人也正就是卫托平，以便和卫托平偷袭天山派的计划配合的。那次卫托平的阴谋虽不成功，但天山派所受的损害亦已不少。这件事情的真相天山派后来也知道了。后来段剑青逃下天山，也曾有人发现他是与大吉法师同行。
冷冰儿尚未知道骗她的人是冒牌杨炎，在她心目中，杨炎虽是死心塌地甘为虎作怅的段剑青一伙，而大吉法师又是和段剑青一伙的。故此当她一踏人通古斯峡，便碰上大吉法师之时，自是不免猜想他是杨炎约来，谋害齐世杰的了。此际，她见大吉法师面色大变，越发相信自己的猜测不错，便即喝道：“你们把齐世杰怎么样了？不说出来，我决不放你过去！”
大吉法师冷笑道：“你要找齐世杰，大可以自己去找，与我何干？”冷冰儿怒道：“你敢说你不是来谋害齐世杰的么？”
大吉法师心想：“莫非连甘沛已是被她所擒，不然她怎么会知道来这里找寻齐世杰？”一来他以为冷冰儿已经知道若干事实；二来他也还不怎样把冷冰儿放在心上，于是傲然道：“不错，我是听说齐世杰得了桂华生的武功秘笈，曾想与他一较武功。但我可没有杀他。我只知道他如今是和杨炎一起。我是看在贵派与那烂陀寺曾有渊源的份上才告诉你，你可别再见啰唆！”
他自以为说得已经很够客气，不知冷冰儿听了却是越发惊怒。齐世杰碰上真杨炎一事从大吉法师口中说出，听入她的耳。中，只道齐世杰已经上了“杨炎”的当了？
唰的一声，冷冰儿拔出剑来，喝道：“杨炎把他骗到什么地方了？”
大吉法师不禁无名火起，哼了一声，冷笑说道：“你的师父对我也不敢如此无礼，莫说我不知道，知道也不告诉你。你想怎样？”
冷冰儿冷冷说道：“你知道也好，不知道也好，总之我是要着落在你的身上，替我把这两个人找来，否则……”
大吉法师冷笑道：“否则怎样？”
冷冰儿道：“否则你可休怪我不放你走出这条峡谷。”她那知道大吉法师正是因为走不出这条峡谷而烦恼，他听了冷冰儿的话，不觉心中一动：“这丫头来得正好，我何不将她擒了，逼她带路。她既然敢来，料想也会识路出去。”
冷冰儿见他神色不定，当是暗加戒备，冰魄寒光剑扬空一闪，再加催问：“你在打什么鬼主意，我可没工夫等你，你到底说是不说？”
大吉法师陡地喝道：“凭你这小丫头也敢欺我！”青竹杖抖起劲风，斜斜一指，闪电般的就朝冷冰儿的右肩井穴打来。冷冰儿曾在天山见过他的本领，识得他的厉害。剑光闪闪，划了半个弧形，把上盘中盘全都护住，剑峰反削，这一招是天山剑的起手式，名为“云锁天山”。大吉法师攻不进去，当的一声，剑杖相交，溅起火星，各无伤损。但奇怪的是，在火星溅起之时，一股透骨沁肌的奇寒之气竟是随之而起，饶是大吉法师内功深厚，也不禁机伶伶的打了一个冷颤。
冷冰儿削不断他的竹杖，也是吃惊不小，心里想道：“幸亏师父把这把宝剑给我，要是换了普通的青钢剑，只怕今天非得吃亏不可！”
大吉法师虽然打了一个冷颤，但他的内功到底不是那个假杨炎可比，寒气沁肌，不过仅能令他的功力稍受点影响而已，运气一转，便即无事。可是他在骤吃一惊之后，却不由得蓦地想起连甘沛告诉他的一件事来，当下退开一步，神情是又喜又惊的问道：“臭丫头，你手中这把剑敢情就是冰魄寒光剑吧？”要知冰魄寒光剑乃是武林中人梦寐以求的异宝，大吉法师见了，能不动心？
冷冰儿说道：“算你眼力不错，你既然识得此剑，还敢逞强？”大吉法师一声冷笑，喝道：“你把冰魄寒光剑双手奉上，我倒可以饶你不死。”大喝声中，已退而复上，一招“横扫千军”，又打来了。
冷冰儿一个盘龙绕步，剑招亦已从起手式的“云锁天山”变成了“推窗望月”，剑势平推出去。
这一招看似平平无奇，内中却藏着极厉害的后着。大吉法师的竹杖横里一扫，用的力道比前更加刚猛，未曾碰着，一股劲风就把冷冰儿的剑锋荡开。不料冷冰儿居然不退反进，趁着对方扫荡之势，借力打力，剑尖轻轻一点杖头，倏地自下反弹而上，上刺大吉法师面门。
大吉左手拿起金钵一挡，挡的方位不正，按说冷冰儿以快剑疾攻，这一剑乘暇抵隙，还是可以刺着他的。但眼看着剑锋堪堪指到他的面门之际，却忽地好像被一股无形潜力牵过一边。说时迟那时快，大吉法师已是一招“平沙落雁”，竹杖猛地劈下，敲击她的手腕，大声喝道：“撤剑！”
原来大吉法师的金钵虽然已被齐世杰刺穿钵底，磁性减弱几分，但也还是有吸铁的功能的。好在冷冰儿的冰魄寒光剑并非金属，不至于被他吸人钵中。但大吉法师以龙象功旋转金钵，以挥出来的那股相当强烈的吸力，对非金属的兵器，也还可以引过一旁。
“当”的一声，冰魄寒光剑和大吉法师的青竹杖又一次碰个正着。这一次大吉法师已经用上了龙象功，震得冷冰儿的虎口隐隐发麻，连忙一个“细胸巧翻云”倒纵出去，不过冰魄寒光剑可还是在她的手中。
这一下双方都是吃惊不小。冷冰儿那一剑刺不着他固然是始料之所不及，大吉法师吸不动她的剑，加上了龙象功，也还不能令她“撤剑”，更是惊奇。蓦然一省，想道：“听说冰魄寒光剑乃是万年寒玉炼成，怪不得我的金钵对它无效。不过龙象功也克她不住，这丫头的功力纵然比不上那姓齐的小子，倒也不可小觑了。”
但试了这招，大吉法师亦已知道冷冰儿的功力虽然不弱，但自忖还是可以胜她一筹，于是把龙象功全力发挥，狠狠抢攻。金钵护身，竹杖猛打，来势之烈，端的有如狂风暴雨。
冷冰儿眼看抵挡不住，蓦地剑法亦是为之一变。变得奇幻之极，而且剑上发出的奇寒之气也是越来越浓。原来她已是把冰川剑法使出来了。
冷冰儿学成了“冰川剑法”，这还是第二次拿来应用，起初不大纯熟，渐渐熟而生巧，当真像是冰川一样，往往表面看来似是平平淡淡的一招，内里却暗流汹涌，威力之大，难以想像。使到疾处，但见寒光一片，剑气千重，把大吉法师的青竹杖紧紧裹住。四面八方，都是冷冰儿的影子，不过半枝香时刻，冷冰儿已是反客为主，从下风扳成平手，又从平手而抢占上风了。
冷冰儿最初用天山剑法打不过大吉法师，这并不是因为天山剑法不及冰川剑法，而是内中另有缘故。
第一，大吉法师见过天山剑法，虽然未洞悉其中奥妙，但对一个在武学上有深湛造诣的人，曾经见过的剑法，总是比较容易应付一些。冰川剑法却是他从未见过的，冷冰儿使的每一招都是他始料之所不及，往往表面看来极为平淡的一招，当他应付时，便觉得奇幻无比。
第二，冰魄寒光剑本来就是要用冰川剑法配合，方能发挥最大威力的。剑上发出的奇寒之气越来越浓，饶是大吉法师内功深厚，也是感觉如坠冰窟，着实有点难熬。无可奈何，只好一面抵挡冷冰儿的剑招，一面默运玄功，抵御这股刺骨侵肌的寒气。
他本来是在功力上胜过冷冰儿的，如此一来，变成一心二用，此消彼长，连这点便宜也占不到了。不过他的龙象功能耐久战，青竹杖和紫金钵也都是武林异宝，冷冰儿在急切之间也还是胜他不得。
齐世杰失去了大吉法师的踪迹，正在到处寻找之后，忽地隐隐听得兵器碰磕之声。不觉大奇：“什么人在这峡谷之中打斗，难道是我听错了么？”几乎疑心这是像魔鬼城风中怪声那样的幻觉，但既然听到了这种似是兵器碰磕的声音，就像是在沙漠中被困的旅人，发现了远处有绿洲一样，那怕只是海市蜃楼的幻相，也不能不去查察一个究竟了。循声觅迹，终于给他找到了冷冰儿和大吉法师正在打斗的那个地方。
刚才他是不敢相信自己的耳朵，如今他是不敢相信自己的眼睛了，他揉揉自己的眼睛，呆了片刻，这才猛地失声叫道：“冷女侠，冷女侠，你，你怎的也来了这儿？”
就在此时，冷冰儿正在把一把冰魄神弹向大吉法师洒去，冰弹一发，冷气寒光，凝聚如网。
大吉法师骤吃一惊之下，根本就没想到她这冰魄神弹并非普通的金属暗器，本能的拿起嵌有磁石的紫金钵一挡，想把她这“暗器”吸入钵中。那知不挡还好，他这一挡，冰弹碰着金钵，立即炸裂，冰气寒光，迅即弥漫空际，转眼间凝结成一层好像有实质的东西，似是一张无形的网撒了下来，把冰魄神弹的威力发挥得更强更快！
这霎那间，大吉法师只觉全身麻木，血液都好像要凝固了。他情知再打下去，自己必将束手就擒，趁着还能勉强支持之际，急忙一咬舌尖，强振精神，把残余的功力都运到杖端，跃将起来，狠戳过去。同时左手的金钵也向冷冰儿劈面掷来。这一下疯狂反扑，乃是他毕生功力之所聚，成败系于一击，端的凶恶无比。
齐世杰禁不住慌忙叫道：“冰河倒挂，飞瀑潜流！”这是冰川剑法中化解功力在己之上的敌手强攻的两招精妙招数。话犹未了，只见冷冰儿果然已经使出了这两招冰川剑法。齐世杰松了口气，心里想道：“她这两招虽然不及桂华生在冰窟石壁上的精妙，但对付大吉的强攻，相信已是足以破解有余。”心念未已，只见大吉法师的竹杖果然已是脱手飞出，掷出的紫金钵也没打着冷冰儿，滚下山坡去了。
大吉法师面如死灰，叫道：“齐世杰，你来杀了我吧。”
齐世杰却道：“冷女侠，请你看在我的份上，放过这位大和尚吧！我答应过一位朋友，不杀他的。”原来他是想起了自己对杨炎许下的诺言，同时也想起了杨炎和冷冰儿的关系。不过目前还未到细说的时候，是以他也暂缓把杨炎的名字说出来。
冷冰儿对大吉法师，虽无好感，但一来彼此师门有着深厚的渊源，二来大吉也尚未算得是大奸大恶之辈，她本来亦是无意杀他的。于是听了齐世杰的话，便把冰魄寒光剑插入剑鞘中，冷冷说道：“如今用不着你替我寻人了，看在齐小侠的份上，就放过你吧。”
大吉法师想不到齐世杰竟然会为他求情，当下拾起竹杖和金钵，向齐世杰施了一礼，说道：“施主这番恩惠，老衲记下了。”也不知他说这两句话是什么意思，说罢，便即走了。
齐世杰得与心上人意外相逢，欢喜无比，此时亦已无暇思索大吉法师说的是什么意思，便即上前与冷冰儿相见。
两人意外相逢，一时间都不知从何说起。
半晌，齐世杰说道：“冷女侠，我正想到鲁特安旗找你，想不到你先到这里来了。”冷冰儿道：“我也是特地来找你的。”说罢，不觉脸上一红。
齐世杰道：“你怎么知道我在这儿？”
冷冰儿不觉一怔，心里想道：“难道他还没有碰上杨炎？”于是说道：“你先告诉我，你又怎么会知道要到鲁特安旗找我的？”
齐世杰道：“此事说来话长——”
冷冰儿道：“好，既是说来活长，那就请你从头说起吧。啊，对啦，我还未曾向你道贺呢。刚才多蒙你指点我的冰川剑法，想必你已经在魔鬼城中，得到了桂华生夫妇留下的武功秘笈了吧？就从这事说起好不好。”
要知道冷冰儿自从出生以来，遭受过两个最大的打击，一个是段剑青的负心，一个是她待杨炎有如姐弟，“杨炎”竟然要谋害她。对段剑青她是早已绝望的了，对“杨炎”的“失望”则还是新近的事，因此也更感到痛心。也正是因为害怕在新的创伤之上又再加深创伤之故，此际她实在是怕问齐世杰和杨炎有关的遭遇，纵然不能避免提及杨炎，她也不愿先提。
齐世杰本来就想把碰上杨炎的事情告诉她的，但一想事情若非从头说起，确实也难说得清楚，同时他也想把这个“最大的喜讯”留到最后说可能令冷冰儿得到更大的惊喜，于是便改变原来的主意，应冷冰儿之请，先从魔鬼城中的奇遇说起。
“说起来，我也得多谢你两年前的指点，我真的是在魔鬼城中因祸得福，而且是如你所说，得遇'仙缘'了。”他把在冰窟中碰上迦象法师，又找到了桂华生夫妇留下的内功心法和冰川剑法，以及其后怎样因地震而脱困，脱困之后，碰上窦健刚、连甘沛，和大吉法师这一些人的事情，原原本本
