龙爪手功夫乃是龙家的不传之秘，堪称武林绝学之一，饶是段剑青本身也有上乘武功，在他凌空一抓之下，虽不至于被他抓了回来，脚步亦已迟缓了。
段剑青早已布置好脱身之计，但必须是在混乱之中才能成功的。时机稍纵即逝，决不能受到阻延。

缪长风的衣袖被剑尖画破了一道裂缝，铁袖神功已是不能使用。他不惧雾，本来想追上去的，但心念一转，想起段剑青恐吓他的那句说话，宁可信其有，百忙中回头一看。

救人要紧，缪长风只好暂且放开段剑青，回来救他的义子了。
杨炎得缪长风运功相助，真气登时凝聚，把那枚毒针从掌心逼了出来，说道：“义父，我不碍事，你赶快去捉段剑青那小贼吧！”

天山派弟子中毒昏迷的有十数人之多，被毒针所伤的也有七八个。宾客受到波及的也不少。

天山派自创以来，至今已有二百余年，弟子越来越多，在天山的南高峰建屋聚居，最高的一座就是“天一阁”，如今是由辈份最尊的长老钟展住在里面。（此次大会，钟展正在闭关练功期间，故而没来参加）天一阁下面是天山派的重地，天山派的弟子三百多人，大约还有五六十人留守在山上。
奇变突来，莫说天山派的弟子个个吃惊，即使是身为掌门的唐嘉源也难以保持镇定了。
要知天一阁矗立峰巅，乃是最高的一座建筑，天一阁都已起火，在它下面的晦明堂（掌门人居处）、未风堂（品级较高的男弟子所居的地方）、兰珠苑（女弟子所居的地方）等处建筑，恐怕已经是陷入火海之中。
天山派三百多名弟子，虽说站了八成的弟子已来参加同门大会，但留守的弟子也还有五六十人。这五六十人之中，也不乏武功高明之士，何以竟然抵挡不了敌人的侵袭，以至必须紧急呼援？这伙厉害的敌人是从那里钻出来的？
更可虑的是，那口大钟悬在天一阁上面，若然不是碰上非常事故，不会鸣钟报警，天山派建派以来，报警的钟声只曾敲过一次，那次是十多年前天竺那烂陀寺的高手前来挑衅，清廷的大内高手得知讯息，又再纠结了许多邪派妖人乘机趁火打劫而敲的。经过那次事件，天山派早已与那烂陀寺化敌为友，天山派的弟子谁也以为绝不会有同类的事情发生了，也正是由于有了这种“太平观念”，唐嘉源为了表示对与他父亲同一辈份的长老钟展的尊崇，请钟展入居天一阁，好让他得以闭关练功。天一阁在天山的最高处，与众弟子的住处隔开，众弟子若非奉命，是不能上天一阁的。在钟展闭关练功的期间，只有两个第三代的弟子留在大一阁侍奉他。
在这样情况底下，是谁鸣钟报警，这个疑问就不能不在唐嘉源心中升起，也令他不能不大大吃惊了。
若然是钟展的话，那就表明钟展亦已受困，未能逃出，而且他也自知抵挡不了强敌了。但这还好些，若然不是钟展敲钟的话，那更可虑。钟展是正在闭关练功的，闭关练功倘若刚刚到了最关键的时刻，练功的人有如老僧人定，不但视而不见，听而不闻，倘若受到惊扰，甚至还有走火入魔之劫。因此若是那两个侍奉钟展的弟子敲钟，钟展的生命都可虑了！
唐嘉源大惊之下，正要向一众宾客告罪，亲自赶回去御敌。他还未开口，宾客中辈份最高的两位——少林派的无碍大师与崆峒派的掌门人丹丘生已是齐声说道：“主家有事，我们虽属客人，自是不能坐视。唐掌门，请别拘礼，容许我们效劳。”主客同心，唐嘉源用不着多说了。
杨炎问道：“义父，我该如何？”缪长风当然懂得他的意思，他是在两件事情之间，感到难以取舍。
缪长风想了一想，说道：“炎儿，你已得掌门恩准，准你重列门墙。如今你的本门正在受到强敌的侵袭，你当然应该为本门效力。你跑得动吗？”

杨炎余毒未清，虽得碧灵丹的药力压住，武功究竟还是未能迅速恢复的。此时莫说是碰上段剑青这样的强敌，江湖上的二三流人物，他也未必打得过的。而来侵袭天山派重地的这伙敌人，能够火焚天一阁，逼使钟展不能不鸣钟呼援，这夥敌人当中，比段剑青武功更高的人恐怕就不只一个了。缪长风当然是不能放心离开杨炎。要是帮他一起去追捕段剑青的话，杨炎又未能施展上乘轻功，那就只有成为他的“包袱”，是绝计追赶不上段剑青的了。
他携着杨炎的手追上大队，但也只是仅能追上大队而已，当然还是追不上唐嘉源。
唐嘉源和丁兆鸣、白坚城、甘武维以及宾客中的无碍大师、丹丘生等人跑在最前一列，不多一会，已是回到天山派的老家了。
只见晦明堂、未凤堂、兰珠苑等等建筑果然已经起火，但却并不如他所想像的那样坏，火头虽有十几处之多，火势却并不大。他原以为是已经变成一片火海的，目前所见的情况要比他想像的“好”得多。
天一阁则是上层着火焚烧，火势正在向下蔓延，中层刚被波及。
但火势虽不怎样惊人，那四面扩散的烟味却是令人闻了有一种特异的感觉！
气味并不难受，相反，倒是令人有飘飘欲仙的感觉。但功力较高的弟子还可抵御。稍差的弟子被这香气一薰，多吸了几口便觉头晕目眩，摇摇欲坠。
杨炎吸了一口，又惊又怒，说道：“这是神仙丸的气味，来的一定是白驼山妖人！”宾客中有知道白驼山这一派人的来历的，知道这夥妖人擅于用毒，大惊之下，连忙叫走在后头的人赶快避开风头。纷乱中已是有几个人中毒昏迷了，幸而杨炎还有十多颗神仙丸的解药，立即把解药拿出来交给丁兆鸣分配，救治中毒最深的同门。
唐嘉源、无碍大师、丹丘生、丁兆鸣、白坚城、甘武维等人内功精纯，不惧毒烟，仍然向前行进。唐嘉源下令，叫众弟子暂且退下，避开风头。
杨炎比较识得神仙丸的毒性，知道神仙丸是一种令人陷入迷幻境界的麻醉剂，但不是至命的毒药。只是吸进香气并非直接吞服，受毒又要轻些。天山高处，冰川交错，就在这座山峰下面，也有几条冰川。杨炎想起冰魄神弹也可以辟除神仙丸的毒气味，灵机一动，便即指点同门，叫他们退出一定距离。之后，脑袋浸入冰川之中，或用冰块敷面，当可减轻毒害，最少也可以恢复几分清醒。

天一阁矗立山岭，山势险峻，有一条长约二三十丈的蹬道（依山势凿出石级的道路）作为上下的通道。但蹬道狭窄，仅能容得一人人拾级而登。
蹬道最上一级有两人正在搏斗，站在上首的是个须眉皆白的老者，站在下首的是个年约五十左右，躯体魁梧的汉子。这汉子要比老者高出一个头，故此虽然站在下面一级，但还是要比那老者高出少许。
那汉子攻势十分猛烈，但那老者站在上首，有如渊停岳峙，守得极其沉稳，虽然只是争夺一级，那汉子竟是难越雷池。
这老者不是别人，正是天山派当今辈份最高的长老钟展。
不出缪长风所料，那魁梧汉子果然是白驼山的山主宇文博。
跟在宇文博后面约有二十来人，只因钟展扼守在蹬道的最高一级，且又是正在和宇文博剧斗，蹬道仅能容得一个人拾级而登，是以宇文博的随从虽多，却是无法插手。功力较差的在两大高手掌风激荡之下，在蹬道上都无法立足，只能避过两旁，在陡峭的山坡上寻找勉强可以容身之地。
在这些人之中，杨炎认得三个，一个是攻打回疆的清军副帅武毅，另外两个是宇文博的弟子司空照与慕容垂。
山上都是天山派弟子，人数比宇文博这边更多。唐嘉源大略一数，约莫也有五六十人，亦即是留守在总舵的弟子差不多都已撤退到天一阁了。
不是这五六十名弟子业已有许多人中毒昏迷躺在地上，没有中毒的功力虽然较高，但和钟展、宇文博这两大高手相比，也还相差太远。因此，他们也和敌方那些人一样，同样是插不上手。
这些弟子插不上手，此时正在忙于救火。
天一阁上层着火焚烧，火势向下蔓延，中层刚被波及。山上有的是冰块，没中毒的天山派弟子论功力已是足以和江湖上的一流高手相比，虽然在两大高手的搏斗中插不上手，但捧起磨盘大的冰块掷上高处，在他们则是轻而易举的事。
当唐嘉源等人开始踏上蹬道之时，天一阁的火势亦已越来越小，差不多熄灭了。
原来这次偷袭天山派的事情是早有预谋的，主持这个偷袭计划的人就是武毅和段剑青。后来他们拉得宇文博加入，偷袭的计划就更加“完善”了。

钟展在天一阁上闭关练功，此时刚刚开始进入紧要关头。

此时钟展正在全力和宇文博搏斗，掌风呼呼，跟在宇文博背后的武毅在蹬道上也有站立不稳之势，只能施展千斤坠的重身法定住身形，插下上手。他都插不上手，其他的人更不必说了。在蹬道下面石级站立的只有寥寥几个从京师来的大内高手，其他的人连宇文博的两个得意弟子司空照与慕容垂在内，都被逼避过两边，在陡峭的山坡上寻找勉强可以立足之地。
唐嘉源等人来到之时，正是钟展到了最吃紧的关头，只见他虽然仍是寸步不让，但十招之中，白驼山主最少占了七招攻势，显然他已是处在下风了。
原来钟展一来吃亏在年纪老迈，若然只本身功力，他本是在宇文博之上的，但两人年纪相差了三十年（宇文博刚刚五十出头，钟展已在八十开外），时间一长，自是钟展吃亏；二来钟展是在“闭关练功”的中途“开关”的，若是他这次闭关练功练足了七七四十九天，他可以练成天山派最上乘的内功，虽然他的原意不在争胜，但于他却是可以益寿延年，功力加深之后，也可弥补年老的缺陷，但只练到了一半，便即半途而废，不但前功尽弃，而且由于逆运玄功方能“自拔”的关系，原有的功力反而打了三成折扣。有此两个原因，此消彼长，他还能够令得宇文博不能越过雷池一步，已是竭尽所能了。
唐嘉源又喜又惊，喜者是钟展尚还无恙，他最担心的那种最坏的情况并没发生；但虽然不是最坏的情况，钟展目前力搏强敌，险象环生，亦是足以令他提心吊胆了。
他大喝一声，立即抢上蹬道，喝道：“何方妖人胆敢到天山捣乱！”大喝声中，已是有两名大内卫士给他的劈空掌打得从蹬道上骨碌碌的滚下山来。
武毅在宇文博后面一级蹬道，他手中提着碗口般粗大的钢杖。钢杖一丈多长，他居高临下，反手一仗就朝着唐嘉源的天灵盖打下来，唐嘉源长袖一卷，卷着钢杖，喝道：“你是丐帮弟子，看在天山派和丐帮的交情分上，饶你不死！”长袖一挥一送，钢杖脱手飞出。在一挥一送中，唐嘉源已经用上了“隔物传功”的上乘内功。
武毅只觉虎口一震，不但钢杖脱手，整个人也好像被狂涛冲击一般，抛了起来。他半空中一个鹞子翻身，跌落山坡。所受的冲击余力未衰，他想立足也立足不稳，骨碌碌的滚下山坡去了。这还是唐嘉源手下留情之故，否则他焉能还有命在。
白坚城与甘武维跟在唐嘉源后面，另外两名大内高手窜出急袭。这两人都是用剑的，齐声喝道：“听说你们是天山派有名剑客，我们想见识几招。”
这两人是海南剑派高手，本领比刚才那两人高得多。本来若论剑术，白、甘二人是只有在他们之上，决不在他们之下的，但因海南剑派颇有许多特异的招数，和中土各大门派的剑术不同。天山、海南相隔数万里，白甘二人从未见过这种剑术，而且对方占了地利，开头几招，倒是给他们攻得有点手忙脚乱。
丹丘生道：“这两个鹰爪孙，你们交给我吧！”抢上前去，只是一招，只见冷电精芒，耀眼生缬，那两名大内高手立即逃了。下面的人都还未能看得清楚丹丘生是怎么致胜的。丹丘生冷笑道：“这点本事，就想在天山逞能，快去换过一件衣裳遮丑吧！”
此时下面的人方始看见，那两个人衣裳破破烂烂，上衣都开了十几道裂缝，有一个人还提着裤子，好像生怕裤子会脱下来
