Chapter 1 foreword

Every horror and suspense writer has written at least one haunted tavern novel, in addition to the ever-popular mistaken burial of the dying, which is what I'm about to write. But the strange thing is that I didn't intend to finish it. I only wrote three or four pages. I wanted to use these pages as part of the appendix of my book "On Writing" to demonstrate to readers how a novel can be written. From first draft to second draft.I simply want to provide some examples of the principles that the book talks about. But a pleasant thing happened: the novel was so addictive that I finished it in one sitting.I think what scares people is very different for different people (for example, I have never figured out why the Peruvian tree snake makes some people's hair stand on end), but writing this novel gave me the creeps. This novel was originally part of the audio version of "Blood and Smoke", and the sound in the audio version is even more terrifying.I was scared to death. But hotel rooms are inherently scary places, aren't they?I mean, how many people have been in that bed before you?How many of them contracted the disease? How many people are insane? And how many people might want to hang themselves in the closet next to the TV after reading the last few short lines of the Bible in the drawer of the nightstand next to them?Oh, never mind, let's go check in, shall we?Hold on to the keys... Take your time and you might find out what those four otherwise innocent numbers add up to.

It's just down the corridor. -------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ ① The short story "Burying the Living" written by the famous American poet and detective novelist Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) tells such a story.
