A rain bird smiling thoughtfully. As far as Hawksstandler is concerned, he has completely forgotten the past hostility between the two men.He rushed to the tall Indian, grabbed his hand and shook it vigorously. "We made it," he said to Rain Bird with great satisfaction. "We made it, and we got enough to answer anyone's questions, even in the Supreme Court!" "Yes, you succeeded." Rain Bird agreed softly, "Now you'd better send someone to bring her back." "Oh? Hawks Butler looked at him blankly. "That's right." Rain Bird still said gently, "The person in the room may have suddenly remembered an appointment that he almost forgot, because he just ran out in a hurry.

He didn't close the door, your fire elf has gone. " Hawkes butler turned to the one-way glass in surprise. The water vapor accumulated on the glass, but there was no doubt that only the bucket was left in the laboratory.Brain wave recorder.Overturned ashtrays and burning wood chips. "Go and get her back alone!" Hawkes turned around and shouted, Na Wu.Six people stood by their respective instruments, none of them moved.Apparently only Rain Bird noticed that when the little girl left, Cap also walked out. Rainbird grinned at Hawksdanner, then glanced up at the others; their faces suddenly turned almost as white as their lab coats.

"That's right." He said softly, "Who are you going to get that little girl back?" Nobody moved. That's funny; it occurred to Rain Bird: When those politicians find out that it's happened—the missiles are in the air, the bombs are being dropped.Trees and towns are in flames—that's what they must have looked like.It was so funny, he had to laugh... laugh... keep laughing. "They're beautiful," said Charlie softly. "It's all so beautiful." They were standing right by the pond; not far from where her father had talked with Pinchett a few days earlier.Today is much cooler than that day, and many leaves have begun to change color.A gust of wind blew by, wrinkling a pool of autumn water.

Charlie tilted her head up toward the sun, then smiled and closed her eyes.Standing behind her is John Rainbird, who spent six months as a warden at the Stewart Military Prison in Arizona before going abroad to fight, the same look he sees on inmates who have been released after a long incarceration face. "Would you like to see the horses at the stables?" "Sniff, yes, of course." She said at once, and then gave him another shy look, 'Of course, if you don't object. " "Against? I'm happy to be outside, too. That's Hugh for me" "Did they send you?"

"No," he said. The two started walking along the pond towards the stables over there. "They asked if there were any volunteers. After what happened yesterday, I don't think they found many." "Are they scared?" Charlie asked in a very sweet tone on purpose. "I suppose so," Rainbird said; he wasn't lying this time.As Charlie was wandering down the hall yesterday, Cap caught up with her and escorted her back to her room. The young man who went AWOL is now under review for a job in Panama City. The all-hands meeting after the trial turned into a frenzied farce: the doctors excitedly threw out a hundred new recommendations while endlessly torn about not being able to control her.

These people suggested that her living quarters should be remodeled with fire-resistant materials; that a full-time police officer should be installed;Rainbird forced himself to listen to the chatter. Finally, he finally knocked on the conference table with the heavy turquoise ring on his hand.He kept knocking until everyone turned their heads to look at him.Hawksdanner didn't like him (maybe "hate" wasn't too much of a word); his fellow scientists didn't like him either; After all, he spends most of his day with that human blowtorch. "I suggest," he said, rising to his feet and looking around with his one eye, "that we go on as we always have; until today, you were thinking that the girl might not have the ability at all, though you all know there has been." more than twenty records; and if she had it, it was only a very small power; or if it wasn't a very small power, she would never use it again, and now you know that the situation is very different from your imagination , but you are going to disturb her again."

"It's not like that," said Hawksdanner impatiently, "it's just—" "That's right!" Rainbird yelled at him; Hawksstander sank down in his chair.Rain Bird put on a smile again to the people around the table: "Now, this child is eating. She has gained ten pounds, and she is no longer a scrawny skeleton. She is reading. Talking. Playing games; thinking about it." Wanted a dollhouse, and her handyman friend John has promised to help her get it. All in all, she's in better spirits than when she first arrived. Gentlemen, we're not going to waste our efforts, are we?"

The man who had been in charge of monitoring the video equipment asked hesitantly: "But what if she sets the house she lives on fire?" Rainbird replied quietly, "If she wanted to do that, she would have done it already." No one objected to this. Now, as he and Charlie walked away from the pool to the red-walled and white-sided stables, Rainbird laughed aloud, "I guess you really freaked them out, Charlie." "But you're not afraid?" "Why should I be afraid?" Rainbird said, stroking her hair. "I'm just going to be a child in the dark and can't get rid of it."

"Sniff John, you don't have to be ashamed of that." "If you wanted to set me on fire, I think you would have done so.  … Her body stiffened suddenly: "I hope you don't...don't say such things." ... Charlie, I'm sorry.Sometimes my mouth is too fast, and the words come out without thinking. " They went into the stables. It was dimly lit and filled with the fragrance of grass. The dusty beams of the sun slanted in, and the particles in the hay danced dreamily in the air. A groom grooms the mane of a black gelding with white spots on its forehead.Charlie stopped and stared excitedly at the horse. The groom turned to see her and grinned: "You must be the young lady. They told me you might come."

"She's beautiful," murmured Charlie. She stretched out trembling hands to caress the silky fur. That horse is gentle. The serene black eyes made Charlie fall in love at first sight. "Actually, it's a stallion." The groom said and winked at Rain Bird.He had never seen or heard of Rain Bird, "Barely." "what is his name." "Tianshi." The groom said, "Want to pet him?  … Charlie moved closer hesitantly. The horse ducked for Charlie to pat it.After a few minutes, she started talking to it.It didn't even occur to Charlie that she could light a few more fires and ride with John...but Rainbird saw it in her eyes, and he smiled.

At this moment, she suddenly looked at him and saw his smile. For a moment, her hand patting the horse's neck stopped. There was something in that smile that she didn't like; and she thought she liked everything about John. She has a gut feeling about most people and never gives it much thought; it's like her blonde hair and blue eyes are part of who she is.Usually she deals with people based on these intuitions. She didn't like Hawks Butler, because she felt that in his eyes, she was not much different from a test tube.To him, she was just a thing. But her liking for John was based solely on what he did and how he cared for her; perhaps partly because of his disfigured face: on this, Charlie identified with and sympathized with him. After all, isn't she here because she's a monster too?But besides that, he was one of those rare people—like Mr. Roger, the grocer who used to play chess with her father in New York—who, for some reason, could talk to her. very close.Mister Roger was very old, he wore a hearing aid; he had a faded blue number tattooed on his forearm.Charlie had asked her father if that meant anything, and he had warned her not to mention it to Mr. Roger, promising to tell her later. But he had never told her. And now John was smiling so strangely that it made her uneasy.Charlie asked herself for the first time: what was he thinking? Soon, interest in horses dispelled her wandering thoughts. "John," she asked, "what does 'Heavenly Master' mean?" "Well," he said, "as far as I know, something like 'Wizard' or 'Warlock' "Wizard. Warlock." She chewed the terms softly, stroking the satin-like skin of the Celestial Master as she tasted. On the way back, Rainbird said, "If you like this horse so much, you should ask Hawkes Danle to allow you to come out and ride it sometimes.  … "No...I can't..." She looked at him with wide eyes in surprise. "Sniff, of course you can." He deliberately pretended not to understand her words. "I don't know much about geldings, but I do know that people say they are very docile. He does look like a huge one, but I don't think he will bring Running after you, Charlie." "No, that's not what I said. They won't say yes." He stopped and grabbed her shoulders with both hands. "Charlie McGee, you can be a bit stupid sometimes," he said. "You did me a favor when the power went out, Charlie, and you didn't tell anyone. So now listen to me, I'm going to do you a favor too. Do you want to see your father again?" Charlie nodded quickly. "Then you've got to show them you mean it. It's like poker, Charlie. If you're not playing with strength... then you're not playing at all.Every time you spark their experiment, you deserve something from them. He shook her shoulder lightly, "This is your Uncle John talking to you."Did you hear me? " "Do you really think they'll say yes? If I ask?" "If you ask? Maybe not. But if you tell them, sure. Sometimes I can hear what they're saying: If you just clean out the wastebasket and ashtray for them, they'll treat you like a new piece of furniture.Last time, that Hawks Danle almost peed his pants in fright. " "Really?" She smiled. "Really." The two walked on. "And you, Charlie? I know you were very scared. How are you feeling now?" She was silent for a long time: at last she spoke.Rain Bird had never heard her use such a deep voice. He spoke in such a grown-up tone. "It's not the same now," she said, "it's much stronger. But . It’s just that one came out for a while, but it... it ran everywhere.” Her eyes dimmed: In her memory, the burning chickens were flying in the air like lit fireworks, “But yesterday, when I When I told it to go back, it really went back. I said to myself Feng wanted a small fire. It turned out to be a small fire. It was like I was pulling a string and letting it out little by little." "And then you take it back?" God, no. ' She looked at him. "I put it in the water. If I take it back...I think I'll burn." They walked forward in silence. "There should be more water next time." "But you're not afraid now?" . · Not as cypress as before. She seriously emphasized the difference between the two, "When do you think they will let me meet my father?" " He put an arm around her shoulders tightly. "You've got to put a long line to catch a big fish, Charlie." In the afternoon, the sky began to turn cloudy; in the evening, a cold autumn rain fell. Not far from Ita's headquarters is Patrick, an upmarket suburban complex called Longmont Hills.Hawkes butler lived in one of the houses. He was putting together a motorboat in his workshop (boats and the Thunderbird were his only hobbies), thinking about Charlie.McGee, Hawksbutler is in high spirits today. He figured that if they could get the girl to do the experiment a dozen more times—maybe even ten—his future, his future, would be secure. He can further study the characteristics of Destiny Six in the future... And wages will rise substantially. He glued a mast on carefully, and whistled happily. At another house in Longmont Hills, Herman Pinchet was slipping into a pair of his wife's trousers to hide his erection. His eyes were dim and his expression was in a daze. His wife was at a party; the two children were at a Cub Scout reunion, and the other was in an intramural chess game.Pincher puts one of his wife's bras on carefully, letting it hang loosely over his shriveled breasts. He stood in front of the mirror and looked at himself, thinking that he looked... beautiful. He walked out of the bedroom to the kitchen, ignoring the uncurtained windows like a sleepwalker. He stops by the sink,) and looks down at the intake date on the newly installed garbage disposer. He stood there a long time, thoughtful; then he turned on the machine.Amidst the roar, he grabbed his genitals and started masturbating. When the climax came and ended) he looked back in surprise, eyes full of fear, as if he had just woken up from a nightmare. He closed the processor and ran toward the bedroom; crouching low as he ran past the window.God, what happened to him? In the third house in Longmont - a house with a view of the foothills, the likes of Hawks Steiner and Pinchet can't hope to live in it - Cap Hollinster and Rain Bird Sitting in the living room drinking brandy.Vivaldi was playing on Cap's stereo.Vivaldi had been one of his wife's favorite composers, poor Georgia. "I agree with you." Garp said slowly. He was still wondering why he had invited this man he hated and feared over his house. The fact that the girl had extraordinary powers, and he imagined that the same kind of people would have them, "she said so casually 'next time' was very important to us. " "Yes," Rainbird said, "it looks like we're really productive." "Unfortunately, it won't always be like this." Garp played with the wine glass, and then forced himself to meet Rainbird's bright eyes, "I think I understand how you intend to continue to expand the achievements you have made, although Hawks may not clear." "County servant" Not bad. " Garp paused, then added, "It's dangerous for you." Rainbird smiled slightly. "If she finds out what your real intentions are," Karp said, "you'll probably know what a steak feels like in the microwave." Rainbird's smile turned into a terrifying grin like a shark. "And will you shed a tear of grief for me?" "No," Cap said. "There's no need to hide that from you. But for a while lately—before she agreed to cooperate—I've always felt the ghost of Dr. Varys wandering around. Hurricane Ruler." He stared at Rain Bird over the glass, "Do you believe in ghosts, Rain Bird?" "Yes, I believe." "Then you'll see what I mean. The last time I saw him, he tried to warn me. He made an analogy - let me think about it - that Milton was seven years old trying to use an alphabet that other people could understand spelling his own name; and the same guy who grew up and wrote Paradise Lost). He talked about her...her potential for destruction." "What else? Rain Bird asked with twinkling eyes. “He asked me what we would do if we found out that this little girl could go from setting fire to causing a nuclear explosion and blowing up the entire planet. I thought he was ridiculous. Nasty, and almost certainly insane. " "But now you think he might be right." "Let's just say, sometimes I find myself at three o'clock in the morning," mused the question.Don't you? " "Karp, when the Manhattan Project team detonated their first atomic device, no one knew for sure what would happen. There was an opinion that the chain reaction would never stop—that until the end of the world there would be A miniature sun." Cap nodded slowly. "Those Nazis were horrible, too," Rainbird said. "And the Japanese. Now the Germans and the Japanese are good and the Russians are horrible. And the Muslims. Who knows who will be?" To be a terrible person?" "She's dangerous," Cap said, standing up irritably. "Varys is right about that. She'll put us in a deadlock." "Maybe." "Haukestanle said that the last time the ashtray hit the wall, there were ripples. The wall was made of iron, and there were ripples due to the high temperature. The ashtray itself was twisted and completely deformed. She Melt it down. That little girl might generate three thousand degrees of heat in a second." He looked at Rainbird, who seemed to have lost interest in the conversation and was scanning the living room absently. "All I'm saying is that what you're going to do is dangerous to all of us, not just you." "Oh, yes." Rain Bird agreed with a sense of complacency. "There's a risk. Maybe we don't have to pretend like that. Maybe Hawkessteiner can finish the experiment before having to go through Plan B." "Haux Steiner is a freak," Karp said curtly. "He's an information freak who can never get enough. He can experiment with her for two years, and when we... when we take her away, he Still yelling that we're rushing. You and I both know that, so stop kidding." "We'll know when the time is right," Rainbird said, and I'll know. " "What will happen then?" "Friendly John the Handyman will walk into the room." Rainbird said with a smile "'He'll greet her, talk to her, make her laugh. Friendly John the Handyman will trAs feel! Happy. Because he is the only one who can do it.Then when John thought she was the happiest. He'd punch her hard on the bridge of the nose, shattering it and sending bone shards into her brain.Soon it will all be over... At that point, I'll be looking at her face the whole time. " He smiled—without the ruthlessness of a shark this time. This smile is gentle, kind... fatherly.Cap gulped down the brandy. He needs it.He only hoped that Rain Bird would actually catch it when the moment came.Or they might all discover what a steak feels like in the microwave. "You're crazy," Cap said.He didn't have time to stop, but Rainbird didn't look angry. 'Oh, yes. he agreed, and drank his own brandy. He was still smiling. One-eyed dude.One-Eyed Dude is a puzzle. Andy walked from the living room to the kitchen, forcing himself to walk slowly.A smirk on his face—the gait and expression of a drugged-up man. So far, he'd only succeeded in staying here, with Charlie; Find out that the nearest highway is Highway 301; the surrounding areas are all rural. And all this was a week ago.It had been a month since the blackout, but his knowledge of the base was limited to what he had observed when he and Pinchert went for a walk. He didn't want to use his powers on people near where he lived, because the one-eyed man was listening and watching all the time. And he didn't want to do anything more with Pinchet, because Pinchet was breaking down--Andy was sure of that.Pinchet had lost a lot of weight since their walk by the pond, and he had dark halos under his eyes, as if he hadn't slept well.Sometimes he would fall silent while he was talking, as if he forgot what to say...or his train of thought was interrupted. All this makes Andy's situation more dangerous. When will Pincher's colleagues notice a change in him?Maybe they'd think it was just nervousness, but what if they connected it to him? Then Andy's only hope of escaping here with Charlie will be shattered. And he felt more and more strongly by the day that Charlie might be in serious trouble. Then Jesus Christ, how should he deal with the one-eyed man? He took a can of canned food out of the refrigerator and walked back to the living room to sit in front of the TV. He wasn't watching the show: his mind was racing, searching for a solution to the problem. But when the solution finally appeared, it was (like the last blackout) a complete accident. In a way, it was Herman Pinchert who opened the door for him: he killed himself and two men walked into his room.He recognized one of them whom he had seen at Menders Farm. " let's go, man. said the man, "go out and take a few steps." " Andy smirked, but felt scared inside.problem occurs. What happened to: Bad thing for him; if it was good thing, they wouldn't send such a man.Maybe he was found out.In fact, this is the most likely thing. "where to?" "Just follow us." He was taken to the elevator, but when he got off the elevator and walked into the ballroom,.They didn't go out but walked into the house. They walked through the typing room into a slightly smaller room.A secretary inside saw them come in and shut down the computer in front of him. "Go in," she said. They passed her, through a door, into a small study with a bay window looking out over a goose pond shaded by low canopy trees.Behind an old-fashioned roll-top desk sat an elderly man.He has a keen eye.A wise face; flushed cheeks - Andy thought it was probably not from drinking, but from the sun and the wind. The man looked up at Andy, then nodded to the two people who brought him: "Thank you, you can wait outside." They left the room. The man behind the desk stared at Andy piercingly; Andy looked at him poisedly, still with a smirk. He prayed, hoping he hadn't gone too far. "Hello, who are you?" he asked. "My name is Capton. Hollinster, Andy. You can call me Cap. People tell me I'm in charge of this place." "Nice to meet you." Andy said as he made himself smile more happily, but his heart tightened suddenly. "I have some sad news for you, Andy." (Oh god no, it's Charlie, something happened to Charlie!) Cap stared intently at Andy with those shrewd little eyes. Those eyes were sunken so deeply in a mass of fine lines that you could scarcely notice their coldness and concentration. "Yes." Garp was silent for a while. The ominous silence made Andy more miserable. Garp carefully examined his hands stacked on the notepad.Andy tried his best not to jump over and grab him by the neck. After a moment, Garp looked up. "Dr. Pinchet is dead, Andy. He killed himself last night." Andy opened his mouth in undisguised surprise, relief and fear surged in his chest one after another. But above all of this—like a patch of sky on a rough sea—he realized it changed everything...but how? Cap was staring at him.He became suspicious. He suspects something. But is his suspicion serious or just a job requirement? Countless questions. He needs time to think, but he doesn't.He can only adapt. "That surprised you?" Karp asked. "He's my friend." Andy said simply, and forced himself to shut his mouth and keep silent. The man would listen patiently to him; he would wait patiently (as he was now) after Andy finished a sentence, to see if Andy would spout him out, say something he hadn't thought about.Standard interrogation techniques. And Andy felt strongly that the jungle here was full of traps. It must be because of the echo effect.Transformed into a bounced echo effect. His attack on Pinchert caused an echo effect, which in turn caused his breakdown. And about all this, Andy found himself without guilt; there was fear—and exultant joy. "You're sure that... I mean, sometimes an accident looks like—" "I'm afraid it wasn't an accident." "He left a last word?" (referred to me?) "He put on his wife's underwear, went into the kitchen, opened the garbage disposal and put his arm in." "Oh...my...god." Andy slumped heavily in his chair. If there were no chairs next to him, he would be sitting on the floor. He stared blankly at Cap Hollinster with great terror. -You had nothing to do with it, did you, Andy? asked Cap. "You didn't try to persuade him to do that?" " "No." Andy said, "Even if I still have special powers, why should I do it?" "Maybe it's because he wants to send you to Hawaii," Cap said. "Maybe you don't want to go to Moe because your daughter is here. Maybe you've been lying to us, Andy." Andy was a little relieved that this Cap Hollinster insinuation was close to the truth. If Cap really thought he was the one who pushed Pinchort to this point. Then the conversation wouldn't just be between the two of them. No, it's just going through the motions; that's all.Perhaps they found enough evidence in Pinchet's own files to prove that he committed suicide without looking for some mysterious means of murder.Haven't they said that psychiatrists have the highest suicide rate of any profession? "No, not at all." Andy sounded terrified and confused, on the verge of tears, "I want to go to Hawaii, I told him. I think it's because I'm leaving that he's going to do some more experiments. I don't think he likes me very much. But I sure as hell didn't do anything to make him... make him do that." Cap looked at him thoughtfully.Their eyes met for a moment, then Andy dropped his eyes. "Well, I trust you, Andy," Cap said. "Herman Pinchet's been under a lot of stress lately. I guess it's an inevitable part of life, sorry. Plus there's this transvestite. , it will make his wife sad, very sad. But we mind our own business first, Andy." Andy could feel the man's gaze meet his own. "Yeah, we're always going to mind our own business. That's the most important thing." "Of course." Andy replied dryly. Then there was an unbearable silence. After a while, Andy looked up, thinking Cap was watching him.But Cap was staring out the window at the meadows and Keben. His face was haggard, confused and old, like an old man remembering the happy days in the past. When he caught Andy looking at him; a look of disgust crossed his face.A fire of hatred suddenly rose in Andy's heart. Why should this Hollinster be disgusted? He saw sitting in front of him a fat drug addict - or so he thought he saw.But who ordered this fork? And what are you going to do with my daughter, you old monster? "Then," said Garp, "I'm glad to tell you that you're going to Moy. Andy is a blessing in disguise, does that mean it?I've started writing the official report. "But . . . look, you really don't think I had anything to do with Dr. Pinchett's death, do you? "No, of course not." That small, involuntary look of disgust flashed again. This time, Andy felt a kind of gloating satisfaction. But more important than that is the uneasiness caused by the phrase "I have started writing a formal report". "That's all right. Poor Dr. Pinchett." He assumed a look of affected sadness, but after a moment he asked earnestly, "Then when shall I start?" "The sooner the better. Before next week at the latest." There are still nine days at most! There seemed to be a ram rushing in his stomach. "It was a pleasure talking to you, Andy. I regret that we have to meet under such sad, unpleasant circumstances." He reached out to press the intercom when Andy suddenly realized he couldn't be made to do that.In his room full of monitors and bugs, Andy has been unable to move. But if the man is really a big shot, the office must be "deaf": he will constantly check the room for bugs.Of course, he may have his own monitoring equipment, but "Put your hands down," Andy said, "push" in his head. Cap hesitated. He took his hand back and put it on the notebook like the other one.He looked out on the lawn with that drifting, reminiscing look. "Are you recording the conversation here?" "No," Cap replied calmly. "There used to be a recording facility here—like the kind that gave Nixon trouble—but I took it down fourteen weeks ago." "why." "Because it looked like I was going to lose my job. "Why do you think you're going to lose your job?" Karp said quickly, somewhat chantingly: "No results. No results. No results. If you apply for funding, you have to come up with results. Replace the person in charge. No tapes, no scandals." Andy tries to sort this out.Does this help what he hopes? He didn't know, and time was running out.He felt like he was the dumbest in the Easter egg hunt. The slowest of a child. He finally decided to try again. "Why didn't you get results? McGee's mind control had been completely lost, permanently.Everyone thinks so.The girl didn't want to start a fire, and said she wouldn't do it anyway.People say I'm stuck in Destiny Six and out of my wits. He grinned. "It's all right now."Even Rain Bird said so. " Andy "pushed" again; he felt a slight pain in his head: "Why is everything okay?" "Three experiments have been carried out so far. Hawksdanler is wild with joy. Yesterday she heated up a steel plate.Hawkes butler said the temperature exceeded 20,000 degrees in four seconds. " Shocked, his headache intensified, making it even harder to sort out his chaotic thoughts. Charlie is lighting a fire?what did they do to herGod, what is it? He opened his mouth to ask, when the intercom rang, startling him to give Cap a harder push.At that moment, he seemed to be giving it his all.Karp trembled all over, as if he had been hit by an electric baton. He let out a low hiss, and the blood on his rosy cheeks disappeared instantly.Andy's headaches were worsening rapidly, and he was doing nothing to remind himself to relax; having a stroke in this man's office wasn't going to do Charlie any favors. "Come on," Garp moaned, "It hurts—" "Tell them not to disturb for ten minutes," Andy said. The black horse in my mind is kicking the gate of the stable somewhere, trying to come out and run wildly. He could feel sticky sweat trickling down his face. The intercom beeps again; Cap leans over and presses the switch. His face suddenly aged fifteen years. "Karp, Senator Thompson's aide has arrived with the information you asked for about the take-off project." "Don't disturb me for ten minutes." Garp said and turned off the walkie-talkie. Andy sat sweating profusely. "Would that stop them, or would they get suspicious' but the thoughts drifted away quickly. The black horse would be out in a second and he could ride away, Andy almost chuckled. "Charlie kept lighting the fire?" "yes." "How did you get her to agree to do this?" "Carrots and sticks. Rainbird's idea. She was able to go out for walks after the first two experiments. Now she can ride. Rainbird thinks this will handle her for another two weeks." Then he repeated, "Haukes Butler was wild with joy. . . "Who is this Rainbird?Andy asked, but he didn't think that what he just asked was the most critical question of the party members. Cap gushed on and on. He talked for five minutes. He tells Andy that Rainbird is one of Ita's killers.Wounded badly in Vietnam, lost an eye (the one-eyed pirate in my dreams, Andy thought mechanically). He tells Andy that it was Rainbird who was in charge of the operation that captured Andy and Charlie at Tasmore Pond.He also talked about the blackout and Rain Bird's first approach to Charlie. He ends up telling Andy that Rain Bird's personal interest in all this is just to kill Charlie when the deception is finally exposed.Garp narrated everything in an emotionless but urgent voice. Then he fell silent. During the course of this narrative, Andy grows more and more angry, but also more and more terrified. When Garp's reciting description ended, he was trembling all over.Charlie, he cried in his mind, oh Charlie, Charlie. Ten minutes would go by in no time, and he still had so much to figure out.The two sat for about forty seconds in relative silence; a bystander might have thought that this was a pair of long-time friends who no longer needed words to communicate with each other.Andy's brain was spinning rapidly. 卡普顿·霍林斯特;”他说。 "What's up?" “品彻特的葬礼什么时候举行?” “后天。”卡普平静地说。 “我们要去参加。你和我。你明白吗?” “是的,我明白。我们要去参加品彻特的葬礼。” “是我请求去。当我听到他的死讯时,我悲痛欲绝,嚎陶大哭”“是的,你悲痛欲绝,嚎陶大哭。” “我非常难过。” “是的,你非常难过。” 以这样。但我们两个要单独在一起。do you understand? " “噢,是的,这很清楚。只有我们两个。” “而且我们会好好聊一聊。这个你明白吗?” “是的,好好聊聊。” “你的车上有监听装置吗?” "absolutely not." 安迪再次开始发功。这次是一连串轻微的“敲击”。他每“推”一次,卡普就哆嗦一下。安迪知道这很可能再次导致一次回波效应,但他己别无选择。 “我们要聊聊恰莉现在关在什么地方。我们要聊聊怎样能把这个地方搞得一片混乱,而不用像停电那次把所有的门都锁上。 我们还要聊聊我和恰莉怎样才能离开这个地方。do you understand? " “你们不能逃跑。”卡普用孩子气的,充满怨毒的声音说道,“方案中没有这一点。” “现在有了。”安迪说着,再次“推”了一下。 “噢——”卡普哀鸣道。 "do you understand?" 卡普再次茫然地朝窗外的梢木林望: go.gradually.他的脸上现出了生机并朝安迪看去;安迪正在抽噎; 着擦拭着眼睛。 “你感觉怎么样,安迪?” “好点了。”安迪说,“但是……你知道……听到这样的…… “是的,你难过极了。”卡普说,“要来杯咖啡或别的什么吗?” “不用了,谢谢。我要回自己的房间去了。” “当然了。我送你出去。” "thanks."
