Chapter 31 Chapter Twenty Nine

"Zaphod! Wake up l" "Uh uh uh uh uh huh huh?" "Hey, come on, wake up." "Just let me do more of what I do best, eh?" Zaphod muttered, turning away, and soon fell asleep again. "You want me to kick you?" said Ford. "Does that give you a lot of pleasure?" Zaphod said sleepily. "No." "Me neither. So what's the point of you doing that? Just leave me alone." Zaphod curled up even tighter. "He's inhaling twice as much smoke," Trillian said, looking down at him. "He's got two windpipes."

"Shut up, please?" said Zaphod. "It's so hard to get a good night's sleep. What the hell is wrong with the floor? It's cold and hard." "It's gold," said Ford. With a stunning ballet movement, Zaphod was already on his feet and scanning the horizon for the distance that this golden land stretched in every direction. It's really flat.It shone like... It was impossible to tell what kind of light it was, because there was nowhere in the universe that shone like a planet made entirely of gold. "Who put all this gold here?" cried Zaphod, glaring.

"Don't get too excited," Ford said. "It's just a catalog." "A what?" "A catalog," Trillian said, "an illusion." "How can you say that?" cried Zaphod, crouching down, touching the ground on his hands and knees, and keeping his eyes on the ground. He poked and prodded at it.The ground was thick and a little soft—he could even scratch it with his fingernail. It had a golden sheen, and when he breathed on it, the breath evaporated from it in exactly the same way it uniquely evaporates off the surface of real gold. "Trillian and I woke up earlier," Ford said, "and we too were yelling excitedly until someone came over. We kept yelling and eventually they got upset and threw us in their wares Planetary Catalog."
