龙云从知道他这种少爷脾气，只得照着他的话去办。自己索性躲到编辑部去，也不管他们，随他两人胡闹去好了。少时烟具送了来。项三少一壁吸烟，一壁催正义快快去查看行迹。正义笑道：“我一个人的三爷，你看世界上，有白天做贼的吗？人家班子里，当十二点前后，正是午日中天，多少只眼睛看着，我做什么去？至早也得三点以后，我做手脚也用不了很大工夫，顶多有两刻钟，大事已毕，还能做到天亮吗？”又挨延了两三个钟点。他将皮袄脱下来，拿一条带子，把小衣服紧了紧，又脱下棉鞋，换了一双薄底夹鞋。看看本馆中，连夫役都安睡了，他便一纵身飞上墙头。见翠玉班虽然电灯明亮，却已静悄悄得不闻人声，知道一班客人是走得走，睡得睡了。他便飘身下来，伏在翠云楼住室的窗外，窃听里面有何声息。本来做贼的耳目，比普通常人格外敏捷。他一来至窗下，便知道里面是男女二人。心说：我这一次总算没有白来。少时果听见一个男子声音，说：“你今天把项三少推出门去，这个祸根总算种得不小，提防他早晚要报复你吧。”翠云楼哼了一声，说：“我要怕这个，就不敢到北方来了。妓女留客得要出于本心情愿，不是势力能够勉强的。不过像你这种人，也太难了。我甩走了项三少是为留你。其实讲脸子，讲势力，你哪一样儿能赶得上项三少！如今不说承我这份情，反倒说风凉话儿来吓唬我。像你这种男子，也太难交了。”那个男子被翠云楼数说了一顿，很惶恐地答道：“你千万不要误会。我是替你担心，决没有旁的意思。明天咱们吃过午饭一同到物华楼去。那一只钻戒，大楼已经镶好了，一千七百块钱，真不算多，连金托带手工，还得再加上六七十元，大约一千八，足足够了。”翠云楼说：“那块钻石也不见得怎样出色，不过比我手上的略强一点罢了。”正义又候了一刻，二人沉沉睡去。他一个人到屋中，把男女的衣服一件也没留，包了一个大包袱，把屋门从里面锁上，开开窗子，连人带包袱，全从窗户走了，仍然从墙上跳进报馆，手提着包袱，进了项三少住的屋子。三少一个人躺在床上，正吸大烟呢。见正义提着一个大包进来，眉开眼笑的，仿佛得了什么大彩。一进门将包袱放下，便拍手打掌地大笑起来。项三少忙问他：“为什么笑？包袱里包的是什么东西？”正义打开给他看，见里面男女皮袄，男女的棉裤棉袄，甚至连裤带，腿带子，袜子，皮鞋，一样也没剩下，全都给包来了。项三少笑道：“我派你去是给我出气，不是叫你去偷东西。你偷了人家这许多衣服，是什么意思啊？”正义道：“我不偷东西，您能出得了气吗？”随笑着把经过情形对项三少说了一遍。项三少听罢，恨得咬牙切齿，大骂翠云楼：“不是东西，你准知道项三爷给你打不起戒指吗？什么混账东西，敢占了项三爷的先。你明天再去打听打听那个睡她的男子，他姓什么，做什么事，叫他知道项三爷的厉害，倒看他还敢摆阔吗！”正义道：“明天午后，我随三爷到隔壁去，假装打茶围，咱们看她的笑话。那时他们还许起不来，正在寻衣服呢。您看这一幕活剧，比看模特儿曲线美，不更有趣味吗？”项三少哈哈大笑。 果然第二天午后，还不到两点钟，正义陪三少，大摇大摆地进了翠玉班。各屋里的人，有起来的，也有没起来的。掌班的柳玉，倒是早起来了，披散着头发，跑出跑进，面上现一种惊慌之色。一见项三少进来，强作镇定，赔着笑脸迎上来，说：“三爷今天起得这样早，您的人还没有起来呢，等我给您叫去。您先屈尊一点，到我屋里坐吧。”项三少笑道：“她又不留客，我们一直到她屋里坐吧，起来不起来，没有什么关系。”说着便同正义，一直向翠云楼的屋里闯。这一来可把柳玉的脸全吓白了。到底她是久经大敌的老手，当两人进门之时，她早已用眼睛知照了娘姨大姐，先跑到翠云楼屋中，防备一切。幸而她住的是上房三间一明两暗。此时屋里的男子急得连衣裳也没穿，从东间一直跑入西间。项、霍两人，来至堂屋，还依稀看见了他的后影。要依霍正义，便想追过去，要看一个究竟。幸而项三少还算略顾体面，一把将正义拉住。两人直进东屋，见翠云楼蒙着锦被还在酣睡未醒，只有一个娘姨，在地上立着。见项三少进来，忙得招呼让座，沏茶点烟卷，忙个不了。掌班的柳玉也随着进来，见床上乱哄哄的，放着一堆衣服，像是才从箱子柜里寻出来的。正义心里明白，只是看着项三少发笑。正在这时，忽见一个毛役，夹着包袱贸贸然进来，向柳玉道：“胡八爷的衣裳取来了。”柳玉朝他瞪眼努嘴，骂道：“糊涂东西，别人屋里的衣裳，你拿到这里做什么？”毛役明白过来，赶紧向外飞跑。正义同项三少，俱都拍手大笑，说：“妙啊妙啊！”在这笑声中，又一同跑出来，向柳玉道：“回头再见！”仍回报馆去了。 柳玉本是多年老妓，什么样人什么样事，她都经过。一看这情形，心中早明白了八九，赶紧将头梳好，便到隔壁去寻龙云从。一见云从，便深深请安，说：“二爷，您不要看着不管啊！总算我们有眼无珠，冒犯了项三爷。您要不替我们疏通，我们这翠玉班简直就开不成了。”云从很诧异地说：“什么事用着我疏通啊！你们怎样得罪了项三爷，我连影儿全不知道，却从何疏通起呢？”柳玉道：“二爷您要装糊涂，我更没有法子办了。”云从道：“我是真糊涂，还用装吗？”柳玉听他的口气，简直是不肯承认。心说：我要不用软磨的手段，他一定不肯应承。想到这里，便双膝跪下，拉住云从衣襟大哭起来。云从一把将她拉起，说：“有话慢慢地说，你哭的是什么？”柳玉起来，说：“二爷您哪里知道，人家一件衣袄是真正葡萄肷的，净桶子，就值四百多块。一件貂腿马褂，也值二百多块。如今全都不翼而飞，我怎能赔得起啊！二爷您只当积阴功，替我要回来，就算救了我的命了。”云从大笑道：“岂有此理！你们被窃，尽可向警察署报官，为什么向我说？我既不是官面，又不是捕头，还能替你去起赃吗！”柳玉道：“我的二爷，您还不明白吗，这是项三爷故意同我们开玩笑，哪里是遇窃呢？”云从听她这样说，立刻把脸沉下来，说：“你可不要胡说，难道项三爷还能到你们班子里去偷窃吗？提防叫三爷听见，把你送官。”柳玉道：“我天大胆子也不敢说三爷什么，不过三爷手下的能人太多，保不住三爷昨天不痛快，对他们说了一句，他们想替三爷出气，变了这个小戏法儿，遇巧连三爷还许不知道呢。请您转托三爷，替我们查问查问。如果不是呢，我再另想法子。倘然要被我猜着了，没旁的说，求二爷三爷看在我的老面子上，将原物赏回，我必叫翠云楼向三爷磕头赔礼。二爷同我是多年老相好，难道真能袖手不管吗？”云从被她磨得实在无法了，便问道：“你说了这半天，倒是哪一位客丢的衣裳啊？”柳玉道：“事到而今，我也不敢瞒二爷了。实对您说，是大和洋行的买办胡八。他从翠云楼来津那一天就认识，可从来没有住过。三天两头地摆酒碰和，报销钱很不在少处。前天又带翠云楼去买一块钻石，花了两千块。翠云楼也实在出于无可奈何，不能不留他了。没想到才留下他，便被项三爷认识了。有意拒绝胡八，人家有约在先，并且又花过许多钱，怎能张得开口！
