Chapter 15 Chapter fifteen

A man sat for eight hours facing west on the beach, mourning his unspeakable loss.He could only think of a small part of his grief at a time because the pain was too great to bear all at once. He watched the long waves of the Pacific Ocean slowly crashing along the beach, and he waited and waited, not knowing what to expect. Then at last it would never happen again, of course not, and the afternoon passed, the sun dipped below sea level, and the day was over. It's a stretch of beach we can't name because the man's house is built on it, but it's a small stretch of coast that stretches hundreds of miles west from Los Angeles. The coastline was described in a new edition: "Terrible, asshole, disgusting, dirty, and all kinds of bad stuff, wow!", and another edition a few hours later The: "It's like laying out thousands of square kilometers of American Express junk mail, but without that moral depth. Plus the air in there is, for some reason, yellow."

The coastline stretches west, before turning north to the misty bay of San Francisco, which the Guidebook describes as a "place worth visiting. It's easy to believe that everyone you meet there is a space traveler. Believe A new religion is as simple as saying 'Hi' to them. Before you settle in and get used to your surroundings, preferably three out of four of any questions anyone asks you Say "no" because there are some very strange things going on here, some of which might kill an unsuspecting outsider." Hundreds of miles of winding cliffs and sandy beaches, palm trees, surf and sunsets in " "Guide" is described as: "Not bad, very good."

On a certain stretch of this fine coastline sits the house of this most sad man, who many would think was a madman. But like he told others, it was only because he was crazy. People had many reasons to think he was crazy, one of which was that even though everyone's house here was somewhat different from everyone else's, his house was extremely strange. His house is called "The Outside of the Shelter". His name was simply John Watson, though he liked being called "The Lone Wake," and some of his friends were now reluctantly doing so. There are some very strange things in his house, including a gray glass bowl with eight characters carved on it.

We can talk about him later,--just now was just an episode of watching the setting sun, and he was watching the setting sun there. He's lost everything he loves, and now he's just waiting for the end of the world to come - but little does he realize that it's already come and gone.
