It was written by my grandfather Dong Gong Yuqing, and the first edition was signed "Zhuo Yingzi", which originated from "Chu Songs Yufu Pian", to show cynical and self-defensive aspirations. From 1920 to 1932, it was published in the supplement "Yizhi Zong" of Tianjin "Yishibao", which lasted 12 years. The book takes political anecdotes from the late Qing Dynasty to the warlord period of the Republic of China as the classic, and folk customs and human feelings as the latitude. It is voluminous, broad, far-reaching and profound, and it is regarded as a rare work of writing romantic novels based on modern historical stories.

"Yi Shi Bao" used to be published in separate volumes one after another, and in 1936, it was published in a set of 11 volumes in a new edition, which had a far-reaching influence in the press and publishing circles at that time.Tianjin "Yishibao" is a daily newspaper founded mainly by Catholics under the promotion of Father Lei Mingyuan. The first issue came out.At the beginning of the publication, Mr. Liu Junqing and Father Lei Mingyuan, knowing that their grandfather was knowledgeable and well-known in the press at that time, sincerely invited them to write articles for the newspaper. Not long after the publication of the newspaper, it coincided with the "May 4th" Movement in 1919. In this movement, "Yishi Bao" sympathized with the students and condemned the warlords and bureaucrats at that time, which was well received by the society. In 1936, Suiyuan Bailing Temple fought against Japanese aggression. Yishibao commented and reported on this as the center, and widely publicized anti-Japanese ideas to the society. It also cooperated with the rescue team headed by Father Lei Mingyuan to go to the battlefield to express condolences and encouragement to the anti-Japanese officers and soldiers. He also collected donations from the society and sent them to the front line, which was deeply admired by the Tianjin press. In 1937, the "July 7th Incident", the Japanese army occupied Tianjin on July 28, and the newspaper was forced to suspend publication.

His grandfather was of Han nationality, and his ancestral home was Shaoxing, Zhejiang. He moved to Beitongzhou with his great-grandfather when he was young. After the Republic of China, he moved to Beiping City. He had a lot of friends. He treated people with sincerity and integrity as the foundation of his life. He was able to treat friends with sincerity, speak out for justice, and never succumbed to the oppression of power. He was praised by the people of the time.He once wrote an article for the "Beijing Times" and took his sharp writing to criticize the social ills at that time. Therefore, his reputation grew and his friends and friends became more and more popular. All the social rumors, court secrets, political turmoil, and officialdom changes all followed this channel. Come, I have accumulated a lot of material for the future book.Since my grandfather applied to join the "Yi Shi Bao" agency, he was serious and serious, and he did everything by himself. For the supplementary "Yi Shi Zong" and "Shuo Yuan", he has worked tirelessly to personally arrange the drafting, reviewing, publishing, and editing of the layout. He once wrote a short article for the column "Overtones" every day, commenting on the political situation at that time and the controversies in the literary world , Social dynamics, its articles are meaningful and pungent, deeply aware of the current disadvantages, and fair in argumentation, which has won the sympathy of readers. At this time, the literary thinking is mature, and the writing begins to be written. Everything in the book is true. Only the literary talent processing has the truth in the fiction, which is echoing the official history. The root of the name is also.In those days, my grandfather wrote more than a thousand words in a straight line every day, without adding points or additions or deletions, and directly typesetting and printing, including the court, congress, foreign affairs, internal affairs, gangs, and all aspects of society in the late Qing Dynasty and the warlord period of the Republic of China. There are things that are vividly displayed in front of your eyes, so every book is completed, buyers gather, and it is known as a masterpiece at that time.

In 1935, "Yishi Bao" was reorganized, and my grandfather was transferred to be the chief auditor of the editorial department of the newspaper, responsible for checking the sample of the whole newspaper. The novella novels such as "The Shadow of the Bright Lake" and "The Record of the Valor of the Righteous Heroes" are also very influential in the local publishing industry. After "Yishibao" was forced to stop publishing in 1937, my grandfather was old and frail, and it was difficult for him to move to the mainland with the newspaper. He lived in seclusion at home and taught Chinese in Tianjin Minor Seminary. He led me to Laoxikai Church to attend early morning mass every day ( My grandfather listened to the preaching of Father Lei Mingyuan, and was baptized into the church with five other people in 1916; he later encouraged me in my vocation and had a great influence, so I applied to join Tianjin Minor Seminary in 1940).Although my grandfather was persecuted by the Japanese and puppets, he kept himself clean and lived in poverty. Although he experienced hardships in life, he had a righteous spirit in his heart, and he no longer participated in the press and publishing industry. In 1944, he returned to Jinan, Shandong Province to settle down. He died of illness in Jinan, Shandong Province in 1945 at the age of 66.

Reminiscing about his grandfather’s decades of journalism work, he left behind voluminous novels, numerous essays, and political comments. He has long served as the editor-in-chief of Tianjin Yishibao. , Writing for the people is enough to comfort my grandfather Yu Jiuquan. Although it is an official and unofficial history, things must be well-founded and people must be famous, which can fill in the deficiencies of official history, so this book has certain historical value. On the occasion of this reprint, the preface of the book introduces the author's life, hoping to help readers read this book.
