Chapter 49 Chapter 47 St. Matthew's Institute
Interview Note No. 115, Patient No. 3643, Doctor: Dr. Crowe.
Dr. Crowe: I saw you brought a book, "Mystery and Curiosity", does this book have any interesting tricks?
3643: It is a book for beginners.
Dr. Crowe: Well, tell me what?
3643: These are too simple, really.I don't think you will like it.
Dr. Crowe: But I like riddles.
3643: Alright. If one person digs one hole in one hour, and two people dig two holes in two hours, how long will it take one person to dig half a hole?
Dr. Crowe: This is easy, half an hour.
3643: [laughs]
Dr. Crowe: What are you laughing at?It's half an hour, one hole per hour, half an hour and half a hole.
3643: Doctor, half a hole does not exist.A hole is always a full hole. [laughs again]
Dr. Crowe: Are you hinting at me, Victor?
3643: Of course, of course.
Dr. Crowe: You're not a hole, Victor. It is not impossible to restore yourself to the way you are now.
3643: But I am who I am, Dr. Crowe.I have to thank you for pointing me to the right path.
Dr. Crowe: What way?
3643: I spent a long time denying who I am and wanting to be something else. But thanks to you, I am who I am now, isn't that what you want?
Dr. Crowe: I'm not sure.Maybe everything I did to you was wrong.
3643: Doctor, you can't be wrong. You make me see the light. You showed me that it takes a strong hand to open that heavy door.
Dr. Crowe: Are you the strong hand?
3643: [more laughter] No, doctor, I'm the key.
