“原来我听到的声音，是你用瓷片在挖石头。”陆渐恍然道，“不过瓷片跟石头一比，还不够硬，若有铁钎铁锤就好了。”
“铁钎铁锤？”那人冷笑道，“想得倒美。当初我刚进牢房，不但吃饭用的是木碟木碗，就连拉屎拉尿的便盆，都是木头做的，老子就算要挖洞出去，也不能用木头呀？是故便想了个法子，但凡他们送饭送水，我都假装愤怒，将木碗木盆敲得稀烂。日子一长，他们总不能每天都用新的木碗木碟吧。终于有一次，想是木器都被我砸光了，送饭的人到底改用瓷碗瓷碟了。我吃完饭后，也照样砸碎，瓷片坚硬锋利，用来挖洞，强了许多。你想一想，几块瓷片都来得恁地艰难，更何况铁钎铁锤了。”
这人两年来无人说话，难得遇上陆渐，一时絮絮叨叨，说个没完，恨不能将两年憋下的陈言絮语一口气说完。陆渐听了半晌，渐觉饥饿，便暂且告辞，那人一听他要走，忙道：“你什么时候再来？”
陆渐道：“我吃饱了再来。”那人松了一口气，又促声道：“你一定要来，我等着你。”陆渐嗯了一声，转身回去，却听那人大声叫道：“你一定要来呀，我等着你呢……”
走了好远，那叫声仍是不断传来，陆渐不由得暗暗叹气。想来那人身处天底下至深至暗的幽狱之中，两年半来，不见光明，不闻人声，心中的孤独苦闷，远非世人所能想象，此时忽然有了说话之人，那分眷恋之情，端地无以言表。
陆渐返回深潭旁，捉了海鱼果腹，又睡了一会儿，方才钻入洞中，返回石壁之前，大声道：“前辈，我回来啦。”话音方落，便听那人欢喜道：“你怎么去了那么久？哈哈，等死我了，哈哈，我，我当你不回来了呢……”说到这里，声音一沉，竟微微有些哽咽了。
陆渐也很感慨，叹道：“前辈，咱们想个法子，打破这面石壁。”
那人沉默片刻，问道：“你那边可有刀剑或是别的铁器？”陆渐道：“没有，这边只有石头。”
那人叹道：“若无刀剑铁器，便只有两个法子可以破壁。”陆渐奇道：“哪两个法子？”那人道：“第一个法子是练成西城山部的神通'裂石术'，只消这石壁生有裂纹，便可运劲裂解。”
陆渐叹道：“可惜我不会这个。”

那人颓然道：“便不坐化，也是远水难救近渴。”二人均是陷入沉默。陆渐心道：“事在人为，无论成功失败，终须一试。”当下将双手按上石壁，凝聚精神，劫力从双手涌出，密布石壁之上。不一阵，他便知觉出这面石壁最为薄弱之处，当下寻来一枚尖锐石块，施展“我相”，变相发力，夺的一声，砸在那薄弱之地。
那人正在苦思如何破壁，忽听声响，不由脱口问道：“你做什么？”陆渐道：“用石块砸墙。”那人失笑道：“你又不是蛮牛，用石块砸墙，怎么能成？”却听陆渐啊呀一声，叫道：“碎了。”那人道：“什么碎了，手里的石块吗？”陆渐惊喜道：“不是石块，是石壁，石壁被我砸碎了一小块。”
那人喜道：“你怎么做到的？”陆渐道：“那位会'大金刚神力'的大师教了我变相，我用来砸石壁，本只试试，没料还真管用。”那人惊喜道：“变相？莫不是'三十二身相'？这可是'大金刚神力'的根基呢。”

陆渐道：“但愿如此。”于是依次变相，锤击石壁，渐渐将坚石砸出一个小坑，手中石块却完好如故。
陆渐心中奇怪，却想不通其中缘故。其实这道理便如当日，他用一柄中空刀鞘，击碎忍太的宝刀，当时忍太也觉骇异，却不知这“三十二身相”乃是“大金刚神力”的入门功夫，陆渐于变相之时，不知不觉，已将体内劫力转化为“大金刚神力”，注入刀鞘，虽不如鱼和尚那般威能，却已略具摧坚之势，是故能碎宝刀，而刀鞘不坏。而如今以石破壁，也是这个道理。
敲击许久，那石坑已有数寸之深，陆渐备感疲乏，当下辞别那人，回到潭边，将养精神。待得精神渐复，又去石壁捶打，如此反复敲打数次，那石坑已深达尺许，敲击过去，再不如先前那般沉实，渐有空洞之声。
陆渐心中喜悦，但疲累感也与时俱增，这日敲打半晌，忽觉“三垣帝脉”一跳，劫力微滞，那一相竟变不下去，不由得靠在石壁上，大口喘气。
那人见他久无动静，忍不住道：“你怎么啦？”陆渐长吸一口气，方能出声道：“没，没什么，就是疲惫了些。”那人关切道：“若是累了，便去休息，这事不用太急。”
陆渐此时全身乏力，欲要变相，也是不能，只得返回潭边，寻思道：“必是这几日全力破壁，借用劫力太甚，第二道禁制有了松动之象，若要保住禁制，唯有就此罢手……”但一念及此，心中大为惭愧：“我陆渐能活到如今，全是鱼和尚大师所赐。大师舍身为我，不顾性命；我又怎能贪生怕死，不救这个身处绝境的可怜人？”
想到这里，豪气顿生，养罢精神，又去破壁。连砸两次，这一日，忽听豁剌一声，手底一空，那石壁终被洞穿，一股浊臭之气透过孔洞，扑面而来，陆渐慌忙让开。
只听那人哈哈大笑道：“妙极，就是小了些，须得再大一些，我才能出来。”石壁既被洞穿，孔洞周边的岩石也都龟裂，再行敲击，容易许多，那人也在对面用瓷片撬开裂缝。
又不知过了多长时日。这一日，陆渐正觉疲惫，忽听那人叫了一声：“成了，你退开些。”陆渐后退两步，但觉那洞中伸出一只瘦骨棱棱的手来，继而便是头与肩，那人忽道：“拉我一把。”陆渐拽住他手，向外力拽，那人借力一挣，哗啦掉进水里。
陆渐将他扶起，但觉他浑身皮包骨头，不觉心酸，叹道：“你可真瘦。”那人嘻嘻笑道：“这是我故意饿的，若不瘦些，怎么钻得过来？”
陆渐听得讶异，忽听那人道：“你叫什么名字？”陆渐道：“我叫陆渐，陆地陆，水斩渐，前辈你呢？”
“你问我吗？”那人道，“我若编一个假名字骗你，你会不会生气？”陆渐奇道：“你干么要骗我？”那人冷哼一声，忽道：“你这种滥好人，这世上少得可怜，也最讨厌。”

陆渐听得糊涂，问道：“什么鱼针？只有鱼钩鱼刺，哪来鱼针呢？”
谷缜呸了一声，道：“玉是白玉无瑕的玉，才不是你这木鱼脑袋的鱼。缜是细腻温润的意思。这个字是我妈取的，说是出自颜延之的《祭屈原文》，文中有一句'兰薰而摧，玉缜则折'，意思是说，兰花太香，容易凋谢，玉质太细，容易折断。”
陆渐羡慕道：“谷前辈，你妈妈真好，竟懂这么许多学问，不似我，身上有什么胎记，就取什么名字。”
“狗屁学问？”谷缜冷冷道，“那臭婆娘就会伤春悲秋，她那些调调，我不喜欢。”
陆渐吃惊道：“你怎么能骂，骂……”谷缜冷笑道：“骂我妈是么？她本来就是个臭婆娘，不说也罢。”不待陆渐反驳，话锋一转，笑道，“你说有什么胎记，取什么名字，却又是怎么回事？”
陆渐便将身上胎记形似“渐”字，祖父依此取名的事说了。谷缜听得哈哈大笑，拍手道：“你那祖父倒也有趣，男人的名字就该如此，无须太多弯曲。很好，你这名字得之于天，比我这假斯文的来历好得多了。”
陆渐自小就羡慕别人有母亲疼爱，谁知这谷缜虽有母亲，却不尊重，心中好生不以为然，正想劝导他几句，忽听谷缜笑道：“这里果然好过地牢，竟有这么多水洗澡。”耳听哗啦之声，他竟就着地上积水，梳洗起来，足见此人入牢之前，当是好洁之辈。
梳洗已毕，两人来到潭边，谷缜道：“我饿得慌，有吃的吗？”陆渐递过生鱼，谷缜也不挑剔，抓着便吃，边吃边笑道：“好久没吃肉了。”吃完之后，便呼呼大睡。
睡了许久，谷缜方才醒来，说道：“陆渐，你说这潭下有一条水道，直通大海，对不对？”陆渐道：“不错，这水道又长又窄，若无过人水性，难以潜过。即便侥幸潜过，洞口又有许多鲨鱼守着。”
谷缜叹道：“但也只有这条出路了。”陆渐道：“地牢的门是什么做的，我用变相，或许能够砸开。”
谷缜嘿笑一声，冷冷道：“是精钢铸的，厚有三尺，而且不止一道，前后三道，均是千斤铁闸，凭借机关控制。只是那机关设得极为歹毒，开第一道门的机关在第二道门后面，开第二道门的机关却在第三道门后面，被困者要开前一道闸门，非得先开第二道不可。嘿嘿，就算你有通天的本事，连开三道闸门，后面还有无数守牢的劫主劫奴，等着你送死呢？”
陆渐悲愤难抑，以拳击地，喝道：“谷前辈，这些东岛中人为何如此恶毒？”
“且不说这些。”谷缜淡然道，“这条水路可说是你我唯一生路，你当初怎么来的，须得仔细说与我听，不要漏掉半点。”
陆渐仔细说了。谷缜沉吟道：“如今看来，你能活着到此，全凭劫力。不过听说借用劫力之后，必遭反噬，为何你却没事？”
陆渐叹了口气，将鱼和尚的来历和他舍身设下三道禁制的事说了。
谷缜听罢，冷冷道：“那鱼和尚跟你一般，太过老实蠢笨，所以处处吃亏。”
陆渐听到这里，不觉怒气上涌，大声道：“谷前辈，你这话说得糊涂，若没有鱼和尚大师，我固然尸骨早寒，你也不能坐在这里，跟我说话。”
