Chapter 1 reprint foreword

People's Literature Publishing House decided to reprint, I am happy. This book has been extinct in the market for more than 20 years, and only a few copies are kept in dark and dusty libraries, or hidden in the hands of individual readers.Today's young people don't know about this book, haven't read it, and older readers will forget about this book. Therefore, I think it's a good thing that it is re-published and tested among readers. A work belongs to the people and society, and it should withstand wind and rain among the vast number of readers. In the ten years since its publication, it was a relatively stable ten years, and I didn't hear much response. Most people who have lived in the old liberated areas have experienced the storm of land reform, and it is easy to empathize with and accept the life in "On the Sanggan River".The vast number of readers in the newly liberated areas are extremely yearning and eager to understand land reform and rural class struggle, so although I have heard various kinds of well-intentioned suggestions, incomprehension, some dissatisfaction or indifference to this book , but most of them are pleasing to the ears. After more than 20 years of turmoil, the social situation is different, and the readers have also changed a lot. "On the Sanggan River" must undergo new and greater tests.I welcome this kind of test, which is beneficial to a writer and to the style of a generation. So I am very happy with the reprint of "On the Sanggan River".Literature and art for workers, peasants and soldiers was proposed by Chairman Mao in 1942.After more than 30 years of practice, many literary and art workers have worked hard and gone among the workers, peasants and soldiers, leaving many excellent works for the people, creating many vivid characters, and growing a large number of writers who are familiar and loved by the people. .Practice has proved that Chairman Mao's speech at the Yan'an Forum on Literature and Art in 1942 has extremely great significance. We still have to hold high the banner of Mao Zedong Thought, follow the correct direction indicated by Chairman Mao, eliminate the interference of the wrong line, continue to go deep into life, love the people, create literary and artistic works worthy of our era, and prosper the garden of the socialist motherland .

It is just a small result of my personal efforts to pursue practice under the guidance of Chairman Mao, the guidance of the party and the people, and the influence of life in the revolutionary base areas. At that time, my understanding of the peasant revolution, the class struggle in the countryside, the life in the countryside, and the soul of the peasants were not enough. This book is just my starting point, nothing to be proud of.I've never been proud of it either. Shortly after the Japanese surrender in 1945, I went from Yan'an to Zhangjiakou.I was supposed to go to the Northeast.Due to the civil war launched by the Kuomintang, the traffic was interrupted for a while, so we had to stop.I am in the newly liberated Zhangjiakou, entering the city life I have been away for many years, and I will go to a larger city in the Northeast; emotionally, I am suddenly nostalgic for the rural areas in the old liberated areas that I was familiar with but not deeply familiar with. stand up.I really want to go back to live with the rural people who have been with me for eight or nine years, and work together with some "bumpkin" cadres.Just at this time, in the summer of 1946, the party's instructions on land reform came down. How happy I am!I immediately asked to join the land reform task force organized by the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Central Bureau to carry out land reform in Huailai and Zhuolu. This is a new subject for me.I have lived in several villages at a glance. Finally, we stayed a little longer in Wenquantun. To be honest, I was a layman at that time. Under the situation of looming civil war, I had to quickly understand and analyze the class situation in the whole village, mobilize the vast number of poor and farm laborers to unite, fight against the landlord class, and equally divide the land, support the Before joining the army and a series of jobs, I was a little helpless. The work was mainly done by Chen Ming and Zhao Ke, and I attended meetings and talked individually. After more than a month, when all the work was over, Zhangjiakou was also in a tight spot.Just after the Mid-Autumn Festival, we returned to the Zhuolu County Government and met Comrade Zhu Liangcai who was observing the transfer route of the troops in this area.As soon as he saw me, he said: "Why are you still here! Go back to Zhangjiakou!" At this time, I thought that the men, women and children who had just acquired land in Wenquantun would soon be ravaged by the reactionary Kuomintang army and When it came to the landlord's revenge and persecution, I couldn't move my feet, and I couldn't leave this land. I wanted to stay and fight guerrillas with the people here; but I had to go back to the North China Bureau.Naturally, I couldn't be allowed to do this. I went to the old Jinchaji base area.On the way to the south, I walked on the gravel road in the mountains, but my mind was full of people who were active in the land reform in Huailai and Zhuolu counties, especially Wenquantun. When I arrived at Hongtu Mountain in Fuping, I told the comrades along the way that the formation had been completed, and all that was needed now was a table, a stack of paper, and a pen.At the beginning of November this year, I devoted myself to creation.

This is the first time that I have engaged in the creation of a novel with farmers and rural struggle as the main body.My rural life foundation is not solid, and the relationship between the characters in the novel and me is not too deep.Just because I have lived with them and fought together, I love this group of people and this life, and I want to keep them real on paper for those who read my book.I don't want to write Zhang Yumin as a flawless hero, and I don't want to write Cheng Ren as a great chairman of the peasant association. They can gradually become great people, they cannot become heroes in the blink of an eye.But they were indeed the people who were at the forefront in the early days of the land reform, and they were really rare people at that time.Later, I participated in two land reforms; in the past twenty years, I spent most of my time in the countryside, and met various people, most of whom were farmers or people from farmers; People who are more benevolent and more advanced are more extraordinary people; but judging from the rich real life, in the early stages of the struggle, those who walk in the forefront are often not all noble and perfect people; but they can advance from here and become noble people. , perfect person.

When I write, I have to enter the hearts of the characters in the book, and go into various lives in order to write about them. However, these characters have taken root in my heart and become characters in my heart that cannot be separated from me.So although my book is finished, these characters are not finished. They still have to live with me.They are going to be my friends here and there, new and old, all kinds of friends that are essential to my creative career. This is another point of my experience in writing this book. That winter, I suffered from severe back pain.I used to be able to walk sixty or seventy miles a day, but at this time it was difficult to walk two miles to the district party committee. Can't fall asleep without a hot water bottle wrapped around my waist at night.During the day, I built the stove higher so that I could burn my waist against the wall of the stove.I never suffered from it.Because at that time I always thought of Chairman Mao, thinking that this book was written for him, and I didn't want to live up to his hope and encouragement for me. 4. The sun shines on the Sanggan River.I always thought that one day I would present this book to Chairman Mao.When the old man is alive, I don't want to speak out these thoughts, feelings and these hidden things in my heart. Now is the time when no one thinks that I say these things to express myself and elevate myself, but I feel that I should express my true feelings at that time.At that time, my back was so painful that I couldn’t bear it anymore, but I still fell on the table and wrote down word by word, like a soldier on the line of fire, calling his name and charging forward, just to repay his old man and for the sake of the book. Written by those who stick to it.

Taking the opportunity of this reprint, I would like to thank Hu Qiaomu, Ai Siqi, Xiao San and other comrades. In the summer of 1948, in order to get "On the Sanggan River" published before I left the country, they sweated over the manuscript. When I had already set off and passed through Dalian, Comrade Hu Qiaomu also telegraphed me from Jianping to propose amendments. After this book won the Stalin Prize for Literature and Art, Comrade Hu Qiaomu also specially invited me to talk about the shortcomings and problems in the text of "On the Sanggan River".These are still fresh in my memory.

Since it was out of print, I still have a kind of apology to many friends in my heart, as if I have done something wrong and I am sorry to them.Among them, I often think of Mr. Tokuzo Sakai and Mr. Jin Xuetetsu. They were enthusiastic about cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries, and translated "On the Sanggan River" into foreign languages.Naturally, they also regretted that the book was out of print. Now, well, well.I have no new good news to comfort them, but the resurrection of this book may unfreeze some of the unhappiness they may have had.I wish them good health.

First of all, I should fully thank our party for this book to be able to see the light of day again.I am proud of our correct, wise and great party.Has there ever been such a party in the world that dared to take responsibility and correct mistakes? No matter how many great difficulties our motherland faces, we have hope and a bright future.Let us unite, under the leadership of the Party Central Committee, work hard and create for the happiness of the 900 million people and the bright future of mankind.
