广西素以贫瘠著称，人民久受生活的压迫和清朝官吏的剥削。洪杨金田起义，数年间遍于东南各省，几乎把清王朝推翻。洪杨革命失败后，清廷对于广西人民的压迫和洪杨残余力量的诛锄，更加厉害。刘永福率领义军数百人远走越南，组织黑旗军，帮助越南人民抗拒法帝国主义的侵略，人数逐渐增多，经岑毓英诱骗招安，收编了一部分，编余的义军仍在广西、越南边境流动。甲申（1884年）中法战争后，清廷又大量裁军，陆荣廷、沈鸿英正在这一大批被裁者之列。因被裁士兵生活无着，陆荣廷、沈鸿英即纠集这批人与刘永福的旧部落草为寇——这就是旧桂系的前身。 陆、沈出道之初，以剽悍善战著称，把整个广西省搅成一锅粥，即史书记载的光绪壬辰年（1892）游勇之乱。清廷惶恐之际，派大兵进剿，都无功告退，最后不得不实行招安了事，陆荣廷官至广西提督，沈鸿英为副提督。 陆荣廷系广西人，貌似老实而实具野心。辛亥革命后，广西新军由赵恒惕率领全部北伐，广西境内空虚，沈鸿英便怂恿陆荣廷率兵由南宁进驻桂林，赶走了广西都督沈秉堃，自称广西都督，全面掌管了广西军政大权。这便是旧桂系形成之起始。 陆荣廷得势时，正值袁世凯窃取了胜利果实。陆荣廷对袁先是拥护，后因得不到重用，转而参加护国战争，在军事上起到了很大的作用，如果没有旧桂系，作为护国根据地的云南就会十分危险。袁世凯死后，旧桂系势力更加壮大，曾一度伸张到湘南、广东。也就是在这段时间，张慕云、尹东波、谢老狗等一批武冈籍青年人投入到陆荣廷属下的沈鸿英部。 沈鸿英的入湘有一段来历，要追溯到1913年讨袁之役。当时，湖南都督谭延闿曾一度宣布独立，后来见风头不好而自行取消，保留一些地方军队。这些军队的军官多半是日本士官学生或保定军官学生，如赵恒惕、唐生智、何键、李品仙等人。袁世凯对他们不放心，令王汝贤、范国璋等北洋军队进驻湖南，表面上是防两广的护国军，实际上是监视湖南军队。湘军被北洋军队压迫，退驻湘南、湘西各地，最后终于发生战争。 湖南战争打响后，旧桂系深知如果湘军不能支持，北洋军队就可由湘南入桂入粤，他们的天下就会完蛋。因此，陆荣廷、沈鸿英就倾全力援湘，连刚刚成立不到半年的广西陆军模范营也改为总司令部卫队第一营，随同出发。黄干双正是此营的下级军官。特别是构成新桂系的重要人物白崇禧、黄旭初、夏威也在此营，他们成了日后旧桂系的掘墓人。 桂系分两路军援湘，一路由陆荣廷的内弟谭浩明指挥从广东经耒阳向攸县；一路由沈鸿英指挥从广西经武冈向邵阳。 沈鸿英途经武冈时，大肆招兵买马，扩大实力，当时适逢张云卿之兄张顺风偷牛被杀，其子张慕云欲报仇，遂投入桂军。一同入桂军的武冈籍人士计有数百人，和张慕云分在一个连队的有近二十人，连长黄干双，计有尹东波、谢老狗、钟雪华等人。 张慕云随沈鸿英征战时，势如破竹，大败北军，不久占据了省会长沙。也就在这个时候，湘、桂军内部出现磨擦，谭浩明自恃功大，全不把湖南人民和湖南军队放在眼里。他一个绿林出身的粗人，当了湘粤桂联军总司令仍不心足，想做湖南督军，要把湘军总司令程潜屈为省长，并且几次选举时用武。因而引起湖南军的极端不满，湘、桂从此不和。吴佩孚乘虚而入，桂军大败，纷纷抄原路逃离。 途经武冈时，武冈籍士兵纷纷当逃兵。仅在黄干双连队的张慕云劝同乡说：“现在回去有什么用，家里日子不好过，日子稍好一点又有土匪骚扰，还不如跟着沈司令，在部队里学点本领、见识，说不定将来还能闯一条路出来。”于是，尹东波、谢老狗、钟雪华等十几人就留了下来，一道随大部队回到广西。 当军队从武冈退至全州时，军中盛传陆荣廷有电报，要谭浩明看看，设些埋伏来阻止吴佩孚南下。听到这消息，沈鸿英嗤之以鼻，他在耻笑谭浩明一字不识。 旧桂系中，沈鸿英算是最善谋略的，当听到这种传闻时，他安慰部下说：“弟兄们不用怕，吴佩孚绝对不会入广西，如今直皖战争正在酝酿，他没有精力继续南下。” 果不出所料，追兵连武冈都没有到。 桂军退入广西后，陆荣廷就湖南的取舍及今后安排问计于沈鸿英。沈鸿英说：“如今，无论湖南还是广东，都反对我们，处于这种情况，我们只能选其一，而不能各个击破。” 陆荣廷觉得有理，又问湖南和广东应该舍哪一个省。沈鸿英说舍湖南，并说出三个理由来：“第一，吴佩孚在湖南的势力坚强，无法击退；第二，湖南的军队和人民都比广东难对付；第三，湖南没有广东富裕。” 经沈鸿英如此一说，陆荣廷遂决定专顾广东，与吴佩孚议和。 1918年初，张慕云、尹东波、钟雪华随沈鸿英由广西容县出发，远征广东。他们的连长黄干双是容县人，出发前，黄干双哥哥生下一儿，按当地风俗，新生儿满月要做一架新木桥，搭在小路上，谁第一个通过小木桥，谁就是小儿的干爹。当时，因开拔在即，黄干双回去看望母亲，钟雪华是他的勤务兵，很自然地要随往，适逢新木桥架设不久，于是钟雪华成了黄干双侄儿的干爹。凭着这层关系，加之钟雪华虽短小，但为人颇机灵，很讨黄干双喜欢。 那时，旧桂系属广州军政府，他们在广东最大的敌人是龙济光，战争开始时广州军政府派李烈钧率滇军由江门、四邑正面迎战，沈鸿英率军由容县、陆川出茂名、廉江截其后路。 沈鸿英部是一支能征善战、久经沙场的军队，战斗力十分强大，将龙济光部打得一败涂地，继而又赶走李烈钧，从而使桂系彻底操纵了广东。 旧桂系打败了龙济光、赶走了李烈钧，接着就进行同国民党孙中山先生的摊牌斗争。陆荣廷利用手中的军队改组军政府，将孙中山屈居在他的心腹岑春煊之下。孙中山闻知，辞去大元帅职。最后旧桂系全面操纵了广东省，实现了他的野心。同时，也就在这个时候，沈鸿英与陆荣廷出现了裂痕。问题出在任职上面。沈鸿英劳苦功高，自认为广东督军非他莫属，但陆荣廷却把这位置给了毫无功劳的莫荣新。 莫荣新，广西桂平人，落籍广西不久的广东人，与陆荣廷在边防同当军官，读过几年书，识得几个字。当上广东督军后，常书“横戈跃马想当年”送人，或代人写匾额招牌，以表示不是不识字的老粗。他对粤人说自已是广东人，对桂人说是广西人。陆荣廷正是利用他这种关系来对付粤人治粤的要求。 沈鸿英自认也有两省身份，对陆荣廷的这一做法怀恨在心。为了发泄，他纵容手下为所欲为，他的手下大多数是土匪出身，干起坏事来十分在行，骚扰得粤人苦不堪言，同时也对桂系恨之入骨。 张慕云、尹东波等人在广东与沈鸿英过了几年好日子，接下来又卷入了与陈炯明的恶战。史书说，桂军是粤军打败的，但以尹东波等人的切身体会，事实上是被广东人民打败的。 广东曾有一首著名的民歌，是形容妇女不愿男人当兵的。歌词是：“叮嘱叮，叮嘱我郎莫当兵。三更半夜军书到，号筒哒哒就拉营。”旧桂系统治广东后，这个歌词改成：“叮嘱叮，叮嘱我郎去当兵！快些赶走广西佬，快些去打陆荣廷。”由此可见广东人民对旧桂系的仇恨。 与陈炯明开仗之后，作为旧桂系的主力沈鸿英却不肯听命，特别是东江战事发生时，陆荣廷令沈鸿英增援，沈说：“你叫老莫（莫荣新）去打好了。”然后不战而退。桂军大败，沿途又被广东人民将所有的水陆交通线破坏殆尽，十分狼狈。 桂军退回广西，陈炯明乘胜追击，很快攻下广西的枢纽梧州，桂军顿成瓦解局势。 沈鸿英因在广东时的地位居于莫荣新之下，对陆荣廷早就不满，现见梧州失守，陆的大势已去，遂通电宣布自治，声明与陆脱离关系，自称为救桂军总司令。他以为这样就可讨好粤军并得到桂军的拥护，取陆荣廷而代之。但粤方早知道他善于投机取巧，置之不理，仍然进攻。其他桂军不但不拥护，反而极端鄙视他的行为。他见不是出路，又通电取消救桂军总司令，改称为广西陆军第二军军长，想联合其他桂军抵抗粤军。但都未成功，他在桂立不住脚，遂逃入湖南，投靠赵恒惕。 1926年10月上旬，沈鸿英率部来到武冈，驻扎在南乡龙溪，窥视武冈城。沈抵达时，即令心腹黄干双去北乡石背张家与张云卿联络。张云卿得讯，即令钟雪华在家里打点，率尹东波、谢老狗等一班旧桂军军人前往拜谒。 上路之初，尹东波不解地问：“满老爷你这次不带钟雪华去，而叫我们几位一同前往，这是何意？” 张云卿道：“你们几个都是黄团长旧部，如今重逢，别有一番亲热，而钟雪华已与他多次接触，故没有必要。” 尹东波不语。 一路上，几位多年不见的老战友果然十分亲热，彼此问长问短。大家最感兴趣的是别后沈军之事，缠着黄干双问这问那。黄干双很健谈，有问必答。 尹东波问：“民国10年，沈司令领我们一起入湖南投靠赵恒惕么，怎么只闹打雷不见下雨呢？” 黄干双摇头：“说来话长，其实我们那次入湘并非要投靠什么人，不过是充实实力，养精蓄锐，然后再杀回广西、广东。赵恒惕精得很，仿佛知道我们心思似的，不给枪弹、不给饷。好在天无绝人之路，吴佩孚愿意收留我们，但有三个条件：一是受吴指挥；二是脱离与其他南北各方的关系；三是驻扎地点及一切军事行动均由吴军指挥。” “吴佩孚答应我们的条件是什么？”谢老狗插话道。 “他负责我们的军费给养。”黄干双说，“姓吴的还算够意思，对我们很信任，枪械军饷都很优待，我们扩大实力的目的也就很自然地达到了。特别是我们在湘、赣两省流浪作战，部队进一步得到锻炼，战斗力大有提高。民国11年。我们奉命援赣，狙击李烈钧、许崇智、朱培德的北伐军，恰在这时，广州后院失火，陈炯明叛变，把孙大炮逼上永丰舰，北伐部队南撤。这时候，我们广西也后院失火，云南的杨希闵率部占领了桂林、柳州。不过，这对我们反而是好事，沈司令立即动员全军说：'弟兄们，我们出头的日子终于来到了！现在杀回去，父老乡亲们一定欢迎我们，我们先驱逐杨希闵，再打垮陆荣廷！机会最难得的是，孙大炮正在与陈炯明作战，弟兄们又可以回广东过好日子啦！'沈司令的一番话，全军备受鼓舞，摩拳擦掌挥师回桂。” “沈司令真是大略！”听到这里，张云卿情不自禁地赞叹。 黄干双得意道：“可不是，我们司令还有更厉害的呢，他知道觊觎广州这块肥肉的各路诸侯一定很多，又估计到家乡的滇军十分薄弱，于是兵分两路，一路由邓瑞征将军率本部回桂；一路由他自己亲自率领我们入韶关，沿粤汉铁路到达广州。果然，那里麇集了滇、桂、直、粤的各派势力。
