Chapter 85 front teeth

The sun shone through the thick curtains in Officer Duke's room, and we were in his room. I took out my pistol and pointed at his broad waist, he looked surprised. "Robert," he was, "what are you doing?" "What do you think I'm doing?" "You are joking." "Don't move," I said. "I'm not kidding, Duke, can't you figure it out?" "Dude, don't point that thing at me." "I'm not your buddy, Duke." I hate him so much and I'm so worried about losing Joan and can't wait to pull the trigger, but, I'm dying to see Duke panic, he should know what the hell is going on.

He swallowed a mouthful of saliva, frowned, and grinned, revealing one front tooth, which was crooked, as if it was about to fall out at any moment. He reached up and touched the tooth, then stroked his thinning blond hair, his dark eyes fixed on me. "Well, Robert, what's the matter?" "I'm going to kill you, Duke, do you know why?" "You must be joking, Robert," he said, with a look of confusion in his eyes, for it dawned on him that I had come to settle accounts with him. He's trying to figure it out. "You know what's going on, don't you?"

His eyes lit up, then dimmed, and he tried to smile, raising a hand, then lowering it. "You and Joan," I said, "you think you can hide it, that I don't know--" "Joan?" he said. "So that's what happened." "You've played a lot of tricks," I said, very angry. "She's mine, Duke, you should have known. We've worked together for years, you know, I can't stand whoever takes my lover away" "Robert, you think things through, Joan isn't your wife, she's a lady, a lady who doesn't belong to anybody.I'm dating her, but so what? You'll find out sooner or later, Joan is going to tell you. "

"She didn't tell me, and now she doesn't have to, she can completely forget about you, Duke." "Robert," he said, throwing up his hands and taking a step forward. "Robert, listen to me 'best standing wish' he stood there and you could tell in his eyes he knew I wasn't kidding, but he was trying to figure out how to get me back. He doesn't know me. We have worked together in the criminal investigation department for six years. He doesn't know me, but he knows that I will do what I say. "You do that and they're going to get you," he said. "You know, Robert, you can't do such a thing. Besides, Joan is only a girl, and Robert, we're friends."

"I love her," I said. "She loves me, and you spoil it, Duke, we're going to get married." "You're crazy, Robert." "I love her, do you hear that?" "She's just a normal chick to me, Robert, and you've got to—" There were two bang bang shots. The pistol bounced lightly in my hand, and Duke was shot twice in the chest. After standing for a while, he fell forward with his mouth open, and when he landed, his jaw slapped. I turned him over with my feet and looked down at him.His mouth was open and the damn front tooth was missing. He must have swallowed it when he fell to the ground. His eyes were still bright, and then gradually became dull. He was dead.Goodbye, Duke, you bastard.

I wiped the gun, dropped it beside the body, and got out of there. Now, I feel better, really better. However, there is a strange feeling, a tingling in the chest, like not enough air.I've had this feeling before, whenever I was worried about something. It will feel like this, what is there to worry about now? I went to Joan's place. She smiled and opened the door. Her smiling face didn't make me happy because of evil intentions, but I didn't care, she was mine now. "Hey, Robert." "baby." We looked at each other and I can't believe she's dating Duke, but that's the truth.

"How did you get here?" she said. "Come and see you, people at the Bureau know I'm here, I told them I might come for lunch." "It's not lunch time, Robert." "I'm running errands and haven't had lunch yet." "I'll make you something, how about a sandwich?" "Well, I'm not very hungry." I can't get enough of her, she's so beautiful, long blond hair, heart shaped face, full lips, amazing eyes. She looked dainty in a short bright yellow dress. She is so important to me. She lives in a small studio, paints a little by herself, and at the same time accepts commissions from others to sell some paintings.

"Come into the kitchen," she said. We went into the kitchen and I was about to reach out to her when the phone rang.I'm a little nervous, but it can't be this fast, could it be me?Well, maybe it was me because Duke and I have always been close, but maybe it wasn't me, I was nervous. She ran to answer the phone. "Yes, yes, here he is. Robert?" I went over and answered the phone, and it was Officer Henry, and he told me that Duke was killed, and they put me on the case.Henry and I have a great relationship and he knows my feelings for Duke. "It's very sad, Robert."

"You mean at his apartment?" "Yes, there." "I'm coming," I hung up, looking at Joan sadly. "What's the matter?" she asked. I hesitated for a moment, feeling like a devil, and then said calmly, "It's Duke's business. He was killed." She froze. "You mean Duke?" "yes." She fingered her skirt, her eyes blank. "Oh," she said. "Did they call you to do it?" "Yeah," I said lazily, and I couldn't help but wish She wanted to say something, but couldn't say it, which made me feel worse. Then, in a clear voice, she said: "Then, Robert, you'd better hurry over there."

"certainly." I nod, I have to get out of here. After a while, I'll look natural, but not now. I went to Duke's apartment, I looked at him, and he was hemming and hawing, the photographer was taking pictures, and the fingerprint team was taking fingerprints.I stayed there, rummaging around, pretending to check the scene. It was dark when I left.It was a really long day. Henry just walked into the downstairs hallway as I left. "What did you find?" he asked. I shrugged. "Could you tell me tonight? Then we can have a serious discussion. Hey, are you coming over tonight?"

"Certainly come, Henry." He walked toward the elevator, and I went outside, thinking, How honest is his pale face and soft eyes! Every Tuesday night, Henry and I would get together for a drink, which we both love.We sat and talked about the case, which has been the habit for three years.Henry is a nice guy. I went to Joan's place and was very uncomfortable there. She kept talking to him, smiling, and then just sat there, and the silence was driving me crazy. Finally, she came over to the chair I was sitting in and sat on the arm of it, her hip touching my shoulder, one hand stroking my hair. "Ah," she said. "It's just you and me." "exactly." She leaned over and kissed my forehead lightly.I sit like a log.I made it, and everything will be fine. "I'll eat whatever I want," I said. "I'm going to see Henry. It's Monday night." "I'll do something for you." "No, I'll go to the street to buy something to eat, thank you, baby." "But I'd like to make you something to eat." "I'm not hungry, Joan." "I see, all right, Robert." "Maybe I'll see you later." She smiled at me. "Ok." I bought a sandwich from a small shop down the street, and it was very bad.Usually I like spiced beef best, but today it tastes like nothing.I left in disgust. Henry opened the door himself. "Hello." I said. "Helen is going to the movies, and it's just the two of us in the room." Helen came down the aisle. She was lively and cheerful, wearing a tawny coat, and she was pushing her thick black hair out of her collar. She said, "Robert, hello, don't drink too much." "Baijiu should be drunk tonight," Henry said. "You two don't get drunk," she kissed Henry, twisted his arm, and left. We went into the living room and sat down by the fireplace facing each other. "Drink?" "certainly." "White wine," he said, holding up a slender bottle. "very beautiful!" "Where did you get it?" "It's imported, the best, and I can't wait." "Next week I'm going to treat you, Henry, and I've got something that will surprise you." "Ah, then I have to see." He poured the wine, and we sat and drank it slowly. It was good wine, too, but the old merry atmosphere was gone. "What did you find out about Duke?" he finally asked. I lit my pipe, leaned back in my chair, and smoked.I said, "I think it was a vendetta, planned by some gangster. You know this guy Duke, Duke opened the door, let him in, hey, how did they-" I stopped, I was about to ask He, how did they find the body so quickly. "What?" Henry asked. "It happened shortly before the discovery?" "An hour, maybe half an hour ago, the cleaning lady found it." "He swallowed his front tooth," I said. "Poor Duke's front tooth. That tooth has been bugging him." "No," Henry said. "He didn't swallow it, Robert. The autopsy didn't find it. It wasn't in his throat. We looked everywhere and couldn't find it." "I'm going to catch his killer, Henry, I'm going to catch him. I can't believe Duke is dead." "I know how you feel, Robert." I smoke. "How are you? How are you getting on with Joan?" "it is good." . "I said, Robert, let's talk about Duke later, let's talk about something else now. A strange thing happened the day before yesterday. " "Oh?" "Someone killed someone in the clock tower." I was very interested. I leaned back, put my right ankle on my left knee, and started to turn habitually. At this time, something fell to the ground. Henry sat there looking at me and at the floor, and I thought it was weird the way he was doing. "Henry, what happened to the clock tower case?" "Robert—" He squatted on the ground and picked up something. I put my right foot off my lap and gazed at Henry's hand.He held out his palm, and in it were Duke's front teeth. "It came off the reflex of your trousers, Robert, I saw it with my own eyes," said Henry. "Saw it fall with my own eyes, onto the floor." We looked at each other, and Henry stood up, holding that damned front tooth, and stood there.I can imagine it bounced off the folded part of my trousers when Duke's chin hit the floor. "Is it because of Joan?" Henry asked. "Yes" "I knew about that, Robert, and I thought it would work out peacefully between you and Duke. That's the way he treats women. He'll seduce anyone." "Yes" "Even if Duke deserves death, you can't do this kind of thing. Killing is against the law, Robert," said Henry. "You'd better give me your pistol." I handed him the gun and said, "You don't mind if I finish this drink?" Henry looked at me and said, "You can drink the whole bottle, Robert, I don't want any."
