Chapter 10 Chapter ten, nineteen, twenty, the cups and plates are deserted and the table is about to leave
Hercule Poirot walked home along the empty streets.
An unobtrusive person came with him.
"How is it?" asked Mr. Barnes.
Hercule Poirot shrugged and spread his hands.
Barnes asked again: "What did he do?"
"He admitted everything, he defended himself. He said the country needed him."
"Indeed," said Mr. Barnes.
After a while, he said again: "Don't you think so?"
"Yes, I think so too."
"In that case, then—"
"We could also be wrong".Hercule Poirot said.
"I never thought of that," Mr. Barnes said. "Maybe we're really wrong."
After they had walked a short distance, Barnes asked curiously, "What are you thinking now?"
Poirot began to quote: "'As you have rejected the command of the Lord, the Lord has rejected your kingship.'"
"Ah—I see—" said Mr. Barnes, "Saul—after the Amalekites. Yes, you may think so."
After walking for a while, Barnes said, "I'm going to change the subway here. Good night, Poirot." He paused for a while, then said hesitantly, "You know——I have something to tell you."
"Really, mon ami (French: my friend)?"
"I feel sorry for you. I accidentally led you astray. It's about Albert Chapman, the QX912."
"how?"
"I'm Albert Chapman. That's part of the reason I'm so interested. You see, I know I never had a wife."
He left quickly, pursing his lips and grinning to himself.
Poirot stood motionless. After a while, his eyes opened and his eyebrows raised.
He said to himself: "Nineteen, twenty, the cups and plates are cold and the table is about to leave—"
Then headed home.
