It is an outstanding folk tale poem and the most important anti-feudal satire in medieval civil literature. This story poem was formed between the 12th and 14th centuries AD. The story mainly describes the life of animals, using the struggle between the fox Reynard and the wolf Isangran who represents the nobility as clues, revealing many social contradictions, and bitterly mocking the autocratic king, greedy nobles, stupid priests and so on.The author portrays the medieval feudal society as a kingdom of beasts and blood-sucking robbers. The image of Reynard Fox is complicated.Although the stories state that he is a noble baron, he is an anti-feudal figure in his struggles against wolves, bears, lions, priests, etc.He played tricks on the king, murdered the ministers, mocked the church, and was almost lawless.His victory marked the triumph of civic wisdom over feudal violence.On the other hand, Reynard fox wantonly bullied and killed many defenseless and weak animals representing the lower working people. Many chickens, rabbits, and birds almost became his prey.From this aspect, he is the image of the urban upper class.Through Reynard's experience, the story vividly reflects that the feudal society was a dark, barbaric world full of fraud, plunder and predation by the weak. The author protests angrily for the vast number of working people who were brutally exploited and oppressed in medieval France.

This story poem is composed of twenty-seven group poems with coherent meanings, with a total of more than 30,000 lines, each of which takes Reynard Fox as the protagonist.There are many original authors, among whom only Pierre de Saint-Cloud (the second group of poems), Richard De Lisson (the twelfth group of poems) and a priest (the ninth group of poems) can be checked.It was well known in medieval France, and the proper noun "Reynard" became a synonym for "fox".After this work came out, several poets in France wrote sequels for it, and there were translations or imitations in Germany, Britain, Italy and other countries.In 1794, the German poet Goethe wrote the epic poem "Reynard the Fox" based on this story.Many French, European and American writers in modern times rewrote it into prose, and it became a vivid and beautiful fairy tale, which is popular all over the world.

Influenced both French and European literature.Many works of the famous French poet La Fontaine were directly or indirectly inspired by it. The translation here is based on the rewritten edition of Mrs. MH Giraud published in Paris in 1969.There are thirty-three chapters in the original book, and seventeen chapters are selected and translated here.
