When the stings of the black bees were destroyed, they could not live. That was the end of the black bees, scattered all around the Tin Woodman, thick like a small pile of good coal. So Dorothy and the Lion stood up, and the girl helped the Tin Woodman, and put the straw back into the Scarecrow, and he was as good as ever.In this way, they set off again. How angry the Wicked Witch was when she saw the black bees dead like a little heap of fine coal, stamping her feet, pulling her hair, and gnashing her teeth. So she called twelve slaves, all Winkies, and gave them sharp guns, and told them to rush to the strangers and kill them.

None of the Winkies were brave men, but they had been ordered to do it; and they went on, and came nearer to Dorothy. Then the Lion roared, and sprang up in front of them, and the poor Winkies, how frightened they were, ran back as best they could. When they fled back to the castle, the wicked witch beat them with an iron bar and ordered them to continue to do hard work. After that, she sat down and thought about what to do next time. She could not understand how all these schemes of killing strange guests should fail; but she was a powerful witch, and a wicked one at that, and soon she decided what to do.

In her cupboard, there was a golden crown set with a ring of golden steel diamonds and rubies around it.There was a magic in this golden crown, that whoever wore it could summon a host of flying monkeys, who could obey any command, but no one could summon these strange animals more than three times. The Wicked Witch has already used the golden crown twice. The first time was when she was going to make the Winkies her slaves so she could rule over their kingdom. The flying monkeys had helped her with this errand. The second time was when she fought the great Oz and drove him out of the West. The flying monkeys had also helped her in this matter. This golden crown, she can use only once more, and now her savage wolves and wild crows, and her stinging black bees. All died in the battle, and her slaves were frightened back by the Cowardly Lion, and she knew that she would kill Dorothy and her friends, and use the golden crown, which was the only way left. .

So the Wicked Witch took a golden crown from her cupboard, and put it on her head.So she stood on her left foot independently, and said slowly: "Hey, pop, climb, Kayky!" Then she stood on her right foot and said: "Xi-luo, heh-luo, ha-luo!" At last she put her feet together and cried out: "Xi-Chu, Ru-Chu, Xi-Ke!" Sure enough; the magic worked. The sky darkened and rumbled, and then many flying monkeys rushed in, with a great chatter and giggle; and as the sun shone through the black sky, it saw the Wicked Witch surrounded by a host of monkeys Then, on the shoulders of each monkey, there is a pair of broad and powerful wings.

One of the flying monkeys, which was much larger than the others, seemed to be their leader, flew close to the Witch's ear and said, "You have called us for the third time, and this will be the last time. What order do you have?" "Go to the strangers, who are all within my borders, and kill them all except the Lion," said the Witch. "Bring me that beast, for I have an idea to equip it like a horse, and call it drudgery." "Your orders are perfectly obeyed," said the Monkey King; and there was a great chatter and noise, and the Winged Monkeys flew off to where Dorothy and her friends were on their way.

Several monkeys caught the Tin Woodman, and flew him out of the country through the air, as far as the thick pile of sharp stones. There they were, throwing the poor Tin Woodman down.He fell into a deep rocky valley, and his whole body was so damaged and dented that he could neither move nor groan. The other Monkeys caught the Scarecrow, and with their long arms pulled out all the straw from his clothes and head, and packed his hat, shoes, and clothes into a little bag, and threw it on the top branches of a tall tree. The rest of the monkeys threw strong ropes around the lion, and coiled them many times around its body, head, and legs, until it could no longer fight and escape by any means. Then he lifted it up, and flew with it to the Witch's castle, and shut it up in a small courtyard surrounded by a high iron fence, so that it could not escape.

But the Winged Monkeys did no harm to Dorothy.Standing, with Toto in her arms, she watched the sad fate of her companions, and thought that it would soon be her turn. The leader of the Winged Monkey flew to her, stretched out his long hairy arms, and smiled with his hideous teeth on his ugly face; but when he saw the kiss of the Good Witch on her forehead, When she saw the mark on her, she stopped being rude and told the other monkeys not to offend her. "We dare not harm the little girl," said her companion, "because she is protected by the Good Witch, who is much greater than the Wicked Witch. All we can do is take her to the Wicked Witch's castle. and leave her there."

So, very carefully, very gracefully, they lifted Dorothy on their arms, and carried her briskly across the sky, right into the castle, and set her down on the front steps. Then the other head said to the Witch, "We have done all we can for you. The Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow have been killed, and the Lion is chained in your yard, and there is only this little girl, We dared not hurt her, or the dog that was in her arms. Your power to restrain and use us is now over, and you will never see us again." So all the monkeys, with great laughter, chatter, and noise, flew up into the sky, and were soon out of sight.

When the Wicked Witch saw the mark on Dorothy's forehead, she was surprised and sad, because she knew very well that not only the Winged Monkeys dared not, but she herself would not dare to hurt this one at all. little girl. She looked down at Dorothy's feet, and saw a pair of silver shoes, and trembled with fear, for she knew that there was a powerful magical power in them. At first, the wicked witch wanted to run away from Dorothy; but she happened to look into the little girl's eyes, and saw that the eyes were clear and the soul was pure, and she knew that the little girl didn't know what the silver shoes had given her. Magical magic. The Wicked Witch did not feel herself smiling to herself, and thought, "I can still make her my slave, because girls don't know how to work its magic," and she addressed Dorothy roughly and sternly. He commanded, "Come with me; I will tell you to pay attention to these things, and if you do not do well, I will kill you, as I did to the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow."

Dorothy followed her, through the many beautiful rooms of the castle, until she ran into the kitchen, where the Wicked Witch bade her wash the pots and kettles, and sweep the floor, and start a fire with wood. Dorothy did her job obediently, and she was determined to do it as hard as she could; and she was glad that the Wicked Witch had decided not to kill her. Dorothy was hard at work. Now, thought the Wicked Witch, she could go out into the yard and ride the Cowardly Lion like a horse; and for her amusement she decided to force him to pull the tour bus, and drive it wherever she wanted to go. Where does it go.But when she opened the gate, the Lion roared at her, and fell on her so fiercely that the Witch was frightened, and ran out in haste, and shut the gate behind her.

"If I am not able to hold you over," said the Witch to the Lion through the crack in the door-post, "I can starve you till you will do what I want you to do, and before that you will have nothing." eat." From then on, she did not give food to the imprisoned lion, but every day at noon, she ran to the door and asked, "Are you ready to pull a cart like a horse?" The Lion replied, "No, if you come in, I will bite you." The Lion was not so hungry, for Dorothy brought him food from the cupboard every night when the Wicked Witch was asleep. When he had eaten, he lay down on his bed of straw, and Dorothy lay beside him, with her head resting on his soft, fluffy mane, while they talked of their difficulties, They tried to get out, but they couldn't think of a way to get out of the castle, because those yellow Winkies, who were on guard all the time, were slaves to the Wicked Witch, and were too afraid of her to do what Dorothy wanted them to do. do. When the little girl had to work hard during the day, the Wicked Witch used to take an old umbrella in her hand and pretend to beat her, to frighten her, but, really, she dared not beat Dorothy, because she was There is a mark on her forehead. But the little girl didn't know this, and was often full of fear for herself and Toto. Once the witch hit Toto with the handle of her umbrella, and the brave little dog rushed up and bit her leg.The place where the witch was bitten did not bleed, because she was so wicked that her blood dried up many years ago. Dorothy's life became very miserable, and she gradually understood that it would be more and more difficult for her to go back to Kansas and see Aunt Em again.Sometimes, she cried miserably for hours, and Toto squatted at her feet, looked into her face, and whined miserably, showing that he was also very worried for his little master.Toto didn't really care whether he was better off in Kansas or Oz's, so long as he lived with Dorothy; but he knew that little girls were unhappy, and that kept him from being happy. Now, with a great desire, the Wicked Witch wanted to have the pair of silver shoes that the girl wore every day as her own.Her black bee and her wolf are dead in heaps of ashes, and she has spent the magic of her golden crown; but if she could get these silver shoes, it would make up for all she lost, And there will be more powerful magic. She watched Dorothy carefully, to see if she took off her shoes, with the intention of stealing them. But how precious a girl is to her beautiful pair of shoes, which she never takes off except at night, when she is going to bathe. The Wicked Witch was afraid of the dark, and dared not go into Dorothy's room at night to take her silver shoes, and she was more afraid of the water than the dark, so when Dorothy took a bath, the Wicked Witch did not dare come closer.Verily, the old Witch had never touched water, nor had water touched her in any way. But the Wicked Witch was very cunning and clever, and at last she thought of a trick that would get her what she wanted. She placed an iron bar in the middle of the kitchen floor, and by her magic made it invisible to human eyes. When Dorothy walked across this floor, because she could not see it, she fell straight down.Falling on the iron bars, she was not very hurt, but as she fell one of the silver shoes fell off, and before she could get it back, the Witch snatched it, and put it on her thin foot. The Witch was very happy that her trick succeeded, and when she had the silver shoe, she had half the magic power, which, even if Dorothy knew how to use it, could not be used to overwhelm her. When the little girl saw that one of her beautiful shoes was missing, she became very angry and said to the witch, "Give me back my shoe!" "No," retorted the witch, "now this shoe is mine, not yours." "You are a villain!" cried Dorothy. "You have no reason to take my shoes." "I will keep it as you keep it," said the Witch, laughing at her, "and I will get another one from you later on." This made Dorothy so angry that she took a pail of water which was lying by, and threw it at the Witch, and drenched her from head to toe.Immediately the Witch gave a high cry of terror, and Dorothy watched in amazement as the Witch began to shrivel up and fall down. "Look, alas, what have you done!" shrieked the Witch. "In a minute, I'll be melted!" "I'm really sorry," said Dorothy, genuinely surprised to see the witch, literally, melt away like brown sugar in front of her. "Do you know that water can end my life?" the witch said in a hopeless voice of mourning. "Of course not," said Dorothy. "How should I know?" "Well, in a few minutes I'll be completely melted, and you can make this castle your own. I have done a lot of evil in the past days, but I never thought that a little girl like you would melt me and end my evil deeds.Look - here I go! " Having said these words, the witch lay down in a brown, molten, shapeless mass which began to trickle over the clean and spacious kitchen floor. It looked as if she had really melted to no avail, and Dorothy poured another pail of water over the pile.Sweep it out the door. When she had picked up one of the silver shoes which had been left by the old Witch, she wiped it clean with a cloth, dried it, and put it on her own foot.So in the end she was free to do what she had to do.She ran out into the yard, and told the Lion that the Wicked Witch of the West was dead, and they were no longer prisoners of this strange land. Thirteen Salvage The Cowardly Lion was very happy to hear that the Wicked Witch had poured a bucketful of water and disappeared without a trace. Dorothy at once opened the prison door and set it free, and they went together to the castle, where Dorothy's first act was to call all the Winkies together, and tell them, They are no longer slaves. There was a great celebration among the yellow Winkies, for they had been free for many years after they had labored for many years for the Wicked Witch, who had often treated them cruelly. So they took this day as a festival, and they will hold banquets and dances on this day forever as a memorial. "If only our friends, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman, were with us, I should be very happy," said the Lion. The girl asked very painfully: "Do you think we can't save them?" "We can try," said the Lion. So they called for the yellow Winkies, and asked them if they would help to save their friend. The Winkies said they would gladly and gladly do all in their power for Dorothy, who had set them free from bondage. So she picked out some Winkies who seemed very bright, and they set off together. They walked all day, and waited until the next day, when they came to a rocky field, and there they saw the Tin Woodman lying there, all battered and bent. His ax was lying beside him, the mouth of the ax was completely rusted, and a part of the handle fell off. The Winkies lifted him softly into their arms, and carried him back to the yellow castle.Dorothy wept for the sad state of her old friend. When the lion saw it, he also whimpered sadly. When they reached the castle, Dorothy said to the Winkies, "Are there any tinsmiths among you common people?" They told her, "Well, yes; some of us are very good tinsmiths." She said, "Then, bring them to me." When the tinsmiths came, they brought all their tools in a basket. She asked, "Can you straighten out the bumps and bends on this tin woodman, restore his original shape, and weld the cracked parts together?" The tinsmiths looked over the badly wounded Tin Woodman carefully, and replied that, in their estimation, it could be repaired, and was as good as ever.So they set to work in a great yellow room in the castle, for three days and four nights, hammering and twisting the Tin Woodman's legs, body and head, Bending, welding, rubbing, and pounding until at last he was straight again, and his joints moved as well as before. However, since then he has had several patches on his body, which is inevitable, but these tinsmiths have done a good job, and the tin woodman is not a vain person who loves appearance, he will not let go of these patches on heart. At last he went to Dorothy's room, thanked her for saving him, and was so happy that he wept tears of joy, while Dorothy wiped every tear from his face carefully with her burqa. , so his joints are not rusted. At the same time, she was happy to see her old friend again, and she shed tears herself, many and quickly, but these tears did not need to be wiped away. As for the Lion, he used to wipe his eyes with the tip of his tail, and the tuft became so wet that he had to go out in the yard and hang him in the sun till it was dry. When Dorothy had told him everything that had happened to him, the Tin Woodman said, "I should be happier if the Scarecrow were with us again." "We must go and find him," said the little girl. So she called the Winkies again to help her, and they walked one day, and the next day, they came to the place where the Winged Monkeys had left the Scarecrow's clothes on the high branches. It was a very tall tree, with a trunk so smooth that no one could climb it; but the Tin Woodman said at once, "I will chop it down, and we shall get the Scarecrow's clothes." While the tinsmiths were doing repairs for the Woodman, some other Winkies, who were goldsmiths, made an ax-handle of solid gold, which fit firmly on the Woodman's axe, in place of the worn-out handle.Others wiped the edge of the ax and wiped off all the rust so that it shone like polished silver. As soon as the Tin Woodman had said this, he began to chop down the tree, and within a short time, when he heard a loud bang, the tree fell down. The scarecrow's clothes also fell from the branches and fell to the ground. Dorothy picked it up, and gave it to the Winkies to take back to the castle, where it was stuffed with fine, clean straw; and behold! The Scarecrow was alive and well as ever, and he was deeply thanking them for bringing him back to life. Now Dorothy and her friends were together again. They lived happily for several days in the yellow castle, where they found everything that could make them comfortable. But one day the little girl suddenly remembered that Aunt Em had come, and said, "We must go back to Oz, and ask him to keep his promise." "Yes, I shall have my heart at last," said the Tin Woodman. The Scarecrow continued cheerfully, "I shall have my brains." The Lion said with concern, "I shall have my guts." "I'm going back to Kansas," cried Dorothy, clapping her hands. "Ah, let's set off for the Emerald City tomorrow!" they resolved to do.The next day they called the Winkies together and said goodbye to them. Their departure made the Winkies very sad, for they loved the Tin Woodman very much, and begged him to stay and rule over the yellow country in the west. But seeing that they were determined to go, the Winkies gave Toto and the Lion a golden lock each; A gold-tipped walking stick, to keep him from falling, and a silver amphora to the Tin Woodman, set with gold and set with precious stones. Each traveler, to the Winkies, thanked them with a sweet farewell, and shook hands till their arms ached. Dorothy ran to the Witch's cupboard, and filled her basket with food to eat as she walked, and there she saw the Golden Crown. She tried it on her own head and found it just right, she didn't know about the magic of the golden crown, but seeing it was beautiful she decided to wear it, took off her bonnet and put it in basket. So they set off together, ready to go, to the Emerald City; and the Winkies gave them three cheers, and many blessings, and sent them off. Fourteen Flying Monkeys You will always remember that between the Wicked Witch's castle and the Emerald City there is no road - not even a path - and when these four travelers went to look for the Wicked Witch, it was the Wicked Witch who saw them coming, so sent the Winged Monkeys to bring them to her. It was much more difficult for them to find their way back through the vast fields of momo and bright daisies than it was when they were carried.Of course, they knew that they must aim at the rising sun and walk straight to the east, so they set out in this way.But at noon, when the sun was shining over their heads. They cannot tell where is east and where is west, so they are lost in the wide open fields. In any case, they could only keep on walking until evening, when the moon rose and shone brightly. All but the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman lay down and snored till dawn among the crimson scented flowers. Next day, when the sun was behind a cloud, they set off on their way, as if they could judge which way to go. "If we go far enough," said Dorothy, "I believe we shall come to that place at some time." But day after day passed, and they still saw nothing, but a crimson field before them. The Scarecrow complained a little. He said, "We must have gone the wrong way, and I shall not have my brains until we find our way to the Emerald City at last." "Neither can I get my heart," said the Tin Woodman. "It seems to me that I have little hope of ever getting to Oz, and it is a very long journey, you must admit." "You know," said the Cowardly Lion in a weeping voice, "if I don't get there, I won't have the courage to walk long and never get tired." So Dorothy was downcast too.She sat on the green grass and stared blankly at her companions, and they also sat down and stared at her blankly. For the first time in his life, Toto felt too tired to chase after him. Butterflies flew over its head; just sticking out its tongue, panting, and looking at Dorothy, as if asking her what they should do next. "If we call the field mice," she suggested, "they might be able to tell us the way to the Emerald City." "They sure can," cried the Scarecrow; "Why, why didn't we think of it before?" Dorothy played on the little flute which she had worn around her neck ever since the Queen of Field Mouse gave it to her.In a few minutes they heard the patter of little feet, and many little gray voles came running to her.The queen herself was among them, and she asked with her little cry, "What can I do for my friends?" Dorothy said, "We have lost our way; can you tell us where is the Emerald City?" The queen replied, "Of course you can, but it is very far away, because you have gone the opposite way." Then it noticed Dorothy's golden crown, and said, "Why don't you use the magic of this golden crown, and call the Winged Monkeys to you? They will carry you to the town of Oz in less than an hour." go." Dorothy said in amazement: "I didn't know there was such magic on it, so what should I do?" "It's written inside this golden crown," replied the Queen of Voles, "and if you're going to call the Winged Monkeys, we must go away, for they are the most mischievous and trouble us as big game." "Will it hurt me?" the girl asked anxiously. "Oh, no; they must obey the man who wears the golden crown, and farewell!" He was gone in a hurry, and all the field mice hurried after him. Dorothy saw something written on the clip inside the golden crown. There must be magic in uttering the words, she thought, so she read the usage carefully, and put the golden crown on her head. "Hey Plop, Plop Plop, Kayky!" As she spoke, her left foot was free-standing. Not knowing what she was doing, the Scarecrow asked, "What are you talking about?" "Xi-luo, ha-luo, ha-luo!" Dorothy went on, this time, her right foot was independent. "Hello!" replied the Tin Woodman calmly. Now Dorothy stood with her feet together, and said: "Xi-chu, Ru-chu, Qi-ke!" When she had finished speaking the magic words, there was a great chatter and flapping of wings, and a troop of Winged Monkeys flew to them, and the King Monkey bowed low before Dorothy, and asked: What order do you have?" "We are going to the Emerald City," said the girl, "and we have gone the wrong way." "We will carry you," replied the Monkey King.As soon as they had finished speaking, the monkeys lifted Dorothy up, sat her on their arms, and flew away with her.The other monkeys brought the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Lion. A little monkey caught Toto and flew in front of them. The little dog was still trying to bite him. The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman were very frightened at first, for they remembered how cruelly the Winged Monkeys had treated them before; And in the fair fields and woods far below them, lived a happy time. Dorothy felt very comfortable riding between the two biggest monkeys, one being the King himself. They were making a chair out of their hands, and everyone was careful not to damage her. "Why do you have to obey the magic of this golden crown?" she asked. "It's a long story," the Monkey King replied with a big laugh; "but if you like, there is still a long journey ahead of us, and I will tell you about it to pass the time." "I like to hear it," she replied. The Monkey King began to say: "Once upon a time, we were all free people, living happily in the big forest, flying from tree to tree, eating nuts and fruits, and doing what we liked. Call our master. But there are many brethren among us, often too mischievous, to fly down and pull the tails of the animals, for they are wingless, and to chase the birds, and to throw nuts in the forest People who walk by. But our lives are carefree, joyful and full of game spirit, enjoying every day, every minute, long before Oz came down from the clouds to manage this place, such a life has been many years. "Leaving here, in the south, there is a very beautiful princess. She is also a capable magician. All her magic is used to help the common people, and she never thinks of hurting anyone. She is a good person, and her name is Ganlinda lived in a beautiful palace built of large rubies. Everyone loved her. But her greatest worry was that she couldn't find anyone who could repay her with love, because she loved everyone. They were too stupid and too ugly to be the consort of such a beautiful and wise princess. But at last she found a boy who was beautiful and brave and wiser than Kalinda resolved to make him her husband when he came of age, so she took him into the palace of rubies, and with all the power of her magic, made him like all So strong, kind, and lovely as women like. When he grew up and became a man, he was called Quillala. The meaning of the name means that he is the kindest and wisest person in all places, When he looked as beautiful as a husband, Gan Linda fell in love with him greatly, so he hurriedly arranged everything and prepared for the wedding. "My grandfather, at that time, was the king of the flying monkeys, and lived in the forest, near Naganinda's palace. The old fellow, he joked, liked it better than a lunch. One day, just Before the wedding. My grandfather, with his entourage, flew out, and they saw Quillala walking by a river. He was dressed in a splendid dress of pale red silk and purple velvet. My grandfather thought See what skills he has. Immediately command the entourage to fly down, catch Quelala, hold him in their arms, fly up, bring him directly to the sky above the river, and then sink him into the water go. "'Swim out, my beautiful friend,' cried my grandfather, 'look, the water will stain your clothes.' Quelala, though clever, could not swim well, but because of his good luck , was not injured at all, and laughed when he came out of the water and swam to the shore. At this moment, Ganlinda ran out and ran to him, and she saw that his silk and velvet clothes were completely lost to the river. dirty. "The princess was very angry. Of course, she knew who had done it. She called all the flying monkeys to her, and at first she said that their wings must be bound, and they must be treated like them. Lala was punished like that and was thrown into the river. But my grandfather tried his best to justify, because he knew that these monkeys were tied up with wings and would drown in the river; Quelala also said for him Good words; therefore, in the end, Ganlinda punished the flying monkeys and had to serve three times after the master who wore the golden crown ordered. On this condition, they were pardoned. This golden crown was given to Quelala for the wedding Yes, it is said to cost half of the princess's wealth. Of course, my grandfather and all the monkeys, immediately agreed to this condition. That's why we can be called so by whoever wears this golden crown. The reason he served three times." Dorothy was greatly interested in the story, and asked, "Well, what will happen to them from now on?" "Quirala was the first owner to wear this golden crown," replied the flying monkey, "and he was on us, the first to make his wish. For his bride will not see us, he told us After we got her, we hid together in the woods, and ordered us to hide there often, so that she would never see a winged monkey again. That was what we liked to do, because we were all afraid of her." "And so we were until the golden crown fell into the hands of the Wicked Witch of the West, who commanded us to enslave the Winkies and drive Oz from the lands of the West. Now the Golden Crown is yours, by Your wish, you have the power to summon us three times." When the Monkey King had finished his story, Dorothy looked down on the sky, and saw the glowing green walls of the Emerald City looming before them.He marveled at how quickly the monkeys flew, and was glad the journey was over. These strange animals placed the travelers carefully before the city gate, and the Monkey King bowed low to Dorothy, and flew away lightly, and his party followed. "It was a comfortable trip," said the little girl. The lion replied, "Yes, and it is a short cut to solve our problems. How lucky you are to have this golden crown!" Fifteen Secrets Revealed Four travelers approached the gates of the Emerald City and rang the bell. After a while, the gatekeeper whom he had met before opened the gate. He asked in surprise: "Ah! You are back again?" The Scarecrow replied, "Didn't you see us here with your own eyes?" "But I thought you'd meet the Wicked Witch when you went west." "Yes, we will meet her," said the Scarecrow. The gatekeeper asked in surprise, "Did she let you come back?" "She can't stop us because she's completely melted," said the Scarecrow. The man said, "Melted! Oh, that's good news, who melted her?" "It is Dorothy," said the Lion solemnly. "My God!" cried the man, really, bowing very low before her. He let them into the little room, and then, as he had done before, took the glasses out of the big case, put them on their eyes, and locked them tight.
