Chapter 8 Naoko Anbo talks about creation 4 Fairies in my works

Naoko Anbo talks about creation 4 fairies in my work ——Excerpt from the symposium: "The Goblins in My Works——The Worlds Telled by the Standard-bearers of Goblin Stories" (Originally published in the 1977 Summer Extraordinary Issue of "Children's Literature and Art" Magazine "Special Issue: The World of Goblins") I have never used the word goblin once.I'm consciously not using it.Although I like the word goblin very much, I don’t know how many times I have been tempted, but I think that the word goblin already has a pre-existing image, if it is used, there will be no unique thing born.

However, it is also out of the spirit of the fairies, for example, there are many tree spirits, wind spirits, flower spirits, and winter spirits in seasons. ... If possible, I would like to name them one by one.I once named it "Huajiao Doll" before, and I really want to name it like that.It feels like "The Girl of the North Wind" and "The Girl of Winter".Of course, I wrote it as a fairy. ... I just thought there was a goblin in the tree.Even if you see a tree while walking on the road, for some reason, you will feel like encountering an elf. For example, when writing about the spirits of the wind or flowers, there is a feeling of desperate effort to write about them, but it is much easier to write about the dryads.Because I really feel like they exist.

... Most of the fairies in my works are dryads. There are seven or eight stories about dryads, right? And there are several articles in it, which still feature the role of a seductive witch. In "Between the Wilderness", the old grandma who lives in the magnolia tree deceives young girls time and time again, turning them into leaves. In Castanets, the dryad lives in a huge sycamore tree, and while knocking on the castanets, lures people or animals outside into the tree. And in "The Forest of Sound" (in this article, the appearance of the goblin is not visible), it is to wipe out people or animals who stray into the ancient oak forest.

Although there are cute dryads like "Pepper Doll", the reason why I wrote so many scary dryads is because I think trees are too mysterious, incredible, and sometimes so scary.Although the giant trees that are hundreds of years old are towering and majestic, they give people a feeling of being overwhelmed. Moreover, no matter what, it makes people feel that there is something mysterious in the "secret room" of the tree trunk. I've also written quite a few incarnations of animals - I don't know if I can call them "fairies".The most written one is the incarnation of the bird.

In it is the peacock princess who only turns into a human at night. In it, there are a boy and a girl of seagulls who are magically turned into people. In "The Crane's House", it is the spirit of the crane that has become a young girl. This may be influenced by "Xihe" or "Swan Prince".However, I do not know why, but I am very fond of birds. When I see a bird flying by, I will be very excited. Fairies may exist there, but in reality, it is absolutely impossible to see them.It is a very difficult thing to vividly describe the absolutely impossible to see, but when it is completed, what a joy it is when your own goblin is born.At that moment, I felt the joy of writing fantasy novels.
