Chapter 31 Part II Tasin-12

i'm going to be a banker "But you also know Finnish!" She reached for the coffee on the table. "That's extraordinary." I'm still smiling, hoping we'll stop talking about language. To be honest, I added "Fluency in Finnish" to my resume because I thought "French proficiency" looked a little thin. After all, who else speaks Finnish these days? Nobody! "And your financial knowledge..." she said, pulling out my resume. "It looks like you've dabbled in a lot of different fields over the years as a financial reporter." She looked up. "What particularly attracts you to do futures?"

What? What is she talking about? Oh, yes, futures. It's futures, isn't it? "Hmm," I began confidently - interrupted by Amy coming in with a cup of coffee. "Thanks." I looked up, wishing we could talk about something else, but Jill was still waiting for my answer. "I think futures are the future," I said earnestly, "and they're a very challenging field. And I think..." What do I think? Oh, God.Should I mention the expiry date of the futures or something? Probably best not to say anything. "I think I'm a good fit for this field," I finally said.

"I know," said Jill Foxon, leaning back in her chair. "I'm asking because there's a bank job that I think would be a good fit for you. What do you think?" Bank job position? Is she serious? She already found a job for me? I can't believe it! "It's fine for me." I try not to sound overly happy, "I mean, I'd lose my futures job; but, the bank's not bad, is it?" Jill laughed.I think she thought I was joking or something. "This is a triple-A foreign bank looking for a new staff member for their debt financing branch in London."

"Not bad." I said skillfully. "I wonder if you are familiar with the continuous arbitrage rules of European banks?" "Of course, very familiar," I put on a confident look, "I wrote an article on this issue last year." What is that word? Set what? "Obviously, I don't want to push you into any decisions," she said, "but if you do want to change jobs, I'd say it's a great fit for you. Of course, there will be an interview, but I don't see it coming." What's the problem." She smiled at me, "We can get you a very attractive salary."

"Really?" I was suddenly out of breath. She intends to negotiate a very attractive salary.for me? "Yes," Jill said, "you should realize that you are unique." She gave me a trusting smile, "You know what? When you sent in your resume yesterday, I literally cheered! I mean, what a coincidence !" "Yeah." I smiled brightly at her.Omg this is unbelievable! I am making a dream come true.I'm going to be a banker. Not some old banker, but a triple-A banker! "So," Jill said lightly, "let's go meet your new boss!" "What?" I was shocked and saw a smile slip across her face.

"I'd like to meet and tell you - but the Head of Personnel at the Bank of Helsinki happens to be here for a meeting with our Executive Director. I'm sure he'll like you. That way we can get the whole thing over with this afternoon!" "Great!" I stood up happily.Ha-ha-ha, I'm going to be a banker! In the hallway, halfway up, her words started to give me a headache.Bank of Helsinki. Bank of Helsinki. That's not to say... of course she doesn't think... "I'm anxious to hear you two talking in Finnish," Jill said cheerfully as we started up the stairs, "I don't understand the language at all."

oh god.Oh my God.No! "I've been hopeless with languages, though," she added comfortably. "I have no talent for that. Not like you!" I gave her a forced smile and walked on without missing a step. But my heart was beating so loudly that I almost stopped breathing.Damn! What to do? What the hell to do? We turned a corner and started walking peacefully down another corridor.I'm doing pretty well.As long as we keep going, I'm fine. "Finnish is hard to learn, isn't it?" Jill asked. "It's not that difficult." I heard my voice flustered, "I... my father is half Finn."

"That's right, I guess that's what it is!" Jill said. "I mean, it's not something you learn in school, is it?" She laughed heartily. All is well with her, I thought wildly. She was not the one who was led step by step to death.Oh man, this is horrible.People kept walking past us with smiles, and glanced at me intentionally or unintentionally, as if to say: "So this is the person who can speak Finnish!" Why should I write "Fluent Finnish" on my resume? Why? "All right?" Jill said. "Are you nervous?" "Oh, no!" I replied immediately, with a forced grin, "Of course I'm not nervous!"

Maybe I can get away with it, it occurred to me.I mean, isn't that guy going to do the whole interview in Finnish? He'll just say, "Haallo" or something, and I'll say "Haallo" and then before he can say it again, I'll do it : "My Finnish has gotten a lot worse lately, do you mind if we talk in English?" Then he'll say... "It's here." Jill smiled at me. "Okay." I said casually, gripping the briefcase even tighter with my sweaty hands.Oh God help me! Please... "Here we are!" She stopped in front of a door marked "meeting room", knocked on the door twice, and then pushed it open. There was a room full of people sitting around a table, and they all turned to look at me.

"Mr Jane Virtanen," she said, "introduces you to Miss Rebecca Bloomwood." A bearded man stood up from his chair, smiled warmly at me, and held out his hand. "Neiti Bloomwood," he said cheerfully, "On oikein hauska tavata. Pitaako paikkansa etta teilla on jonkinlainen yhteys Suomeen?" (Finnish) I stared at him speechlessly, my face flushed.Everyone in the room is waiting for my answer. "I...erm...erm...Haallo!" I waved my hand up in a friendly way, smiling at the people in the room. But no one smiled at me. "Erm...I have to go..." I started to back away, "Got to..."

I turned around sharply and ran away.
