Chapter 27 Chapter Twenty Six

This was the most significant role Jill played in her life. She couldn't understand why Toby needed her so badly. He could have gotten any girl in Hollywood. However, it is not necessary to understand why.The truth is Toby needs her.For days Jill could only think about the dinner party and all the people there—all the big names. They're all catering to Toby. They are willing to serve Toby. For some reason, Jill was determined to find a way to get Toby to do everything for her.But she knew she had to do it very tactfully and very beautifully.Because everybody said that as soon as Toby slept with a girl, he lost interest in her. What he is keen on is pursuit and provocation.Jill spends most of her time thinking about how to approach Toby and how to manipulate him.

Toby calls her every day.Jill didn't agree to have dinner with him again until a week later.Toby's cheerful spirit on happy occasions became a joke among colleagues. "If man was such an animal," Toby said to Clifton, "I'd say I'm in heat. Every time I think of Jill I get hard." He smiled Adding: "When I get hard, man, it's like putting up a notice board on Hollywood Boulevard." The night of their first date, Toby picked Jill up at her apartment in the car and said, "We've got a reservation at Chasson's." He thought it was a grand treat for her.

"Oh?" There was a hint of disappointment in Jill's voice. He blinked. "Would you like to go somewhere else?" It was a Saturday night, but Toby knew he could get a table at any of the restaurants: the Pallino's, the Ambassador, the Derby. "Go ahead." Jill hesitated and said, "You're going to laugh." "No, I will not." "Tom's Fast Food." Toby gets a massage from a body-hugging clown by the pool.Clifton Lawrence was by his side. "You won't believe it," Toby said in amazement. "We stood in line for twenty minutes at that hamburger restaurant. Do you know where Tom's is? It's in downtown Los Angeles. Go to downtown Los Angeles for dinner." They're all farm workers wandering from Mexico. She's so weird. I'm going to pay her a hundred dollars to drink French champagne and have a big meal. But that night, I only spent two dollars and four Ten cents. Then I thought of taking her to the Pipa Ballroom. But you know where we've been? We've gone for a walk on the beach in Santa Monica. No one wants to go for a walk on the beach at night. They will all be robbed by water ghosts." He shook his head and said appreciatively, "This is Jill Castle! Do you believe it?"

"I don't believe it," said Clifton dryly. "She didn't want to go back to my place for a nightcap. So I'm going to go and sleep with her, you know, right?" "That's right!" "Nothing! She didn't even let me in. She gave me a kiss on the cheek and I came back by myself. Look how bad the night is for a top-notch superstar?" "Are you ready to see her again?" "Are you crazy? What bets, I want to see her too!" Since then, Toby and Jill have been together almost every night. If Jill told Toby that she couldn't see him because she was too busy or had an early rehearsal, Toby would be very disappointed. He calls Jill a dozen times a day.

He took her to the most luxurious hotel in the city and the private club that was the most difficult to let people into.In return, Jill took him to the old boardwalk on Santa Manica Beach, and the Trangas Inn, and a little French family restaurant called Ty, and Papa De Carlos, and a All the corners that struggling actresses know.Toby would go anywhere as long as he was with Jill.Because she was the first person he knew who took away his loneliness. Toby was terrified of losing the magic, so he hardly ever mentioned sleeping with Jill again. But he needed her more than he needed any woman in his life.Once, when we parted at night, when Jill said goodbye to him and kissed him softly, Toby put his hand between her legs and said, "My God Jill, I'm going crazy if I don't have you." ’” She stepped back and said coldly, “If that’s all you need, you can get it anywhere in town for twenty dollars.” She slammed the door on him .However, she leaned against the door for a long time, trembling all over. She was afraid of whether she had gone too far.She was anxious all the time and didn't sleep all night.

The next day, Toby gave her a pair of diamond jewelry, and Jill knew all was well. She returned the bracelet to him with a thoughtful note: "Thank you anyway. You make me feel really good." "I paid three thousand dollars for it," Toby told Clifton proudly, "and she sent it back!" He shook his head in disbelief. "What do you think of such a girl?" Clifton could have told the truth, but all he said was, "Certainly not, my dear boy." "It's extraordinary! All the girls in this city are greedy and want everything their little hands can get their hands on. Jill is the first girl I ever met who wasn't greedy. You can blame me for Is she mad?"

"No wonder," Clifton said. However, he started to get anxious. He knew Jill so well that he didn't know if he should have told the truth sooner. "If you want Jill to be your client, I won't object," Toby said to Clifton. "I'm pretty sure she's going to be a big star." Clifton deftly and firmly declined. "No, thanks, Toby. It's enough to have a superstar on my hands." He laughed. Toby repeated this to Jill that night. After that failed attempt, Toby was more careful not to mention sleeping with her.On the contrary, Toby was very proud that Jill rejected him.The girls who had been in love with him before were all at his mercy.Jill was very different.Toby does things, and sometimes Jill thinks something is wrong, and she will tell him truthfully. One night, Toby insulted a man who was pestering him for autographs.Afterwards, Jill said: "Toby, it's funny that you were sarcastic on stage, but now, you really broke that person's heart."

Toby found the man and apologized to him. Jill tells Toby that drinking too much alcohol is bad for your health.Toby pays attention to drinking less. She made a casual comment about his clothing, and he would immediately switch to another clothing store.Toby couldn't tolerate anyone else in the world disputing him.No one dared to command him.The only exception is Jill. Except, of course, his mom. Toby knew that she could not have much money, but she refused to accept the money and expensive gifts that Toby gave her.Her self-esteem and self-respect made Toby admire him even more. One night at Jill's place, Toby was waiting for her to change for dinner when he noticed a pile of bills in the living room.Toby tucked them surreptitiously into his clothes, and the next day he ordered Clifton to pay them off.Toby felt he had won a victory. However, he also wanted to do more things for Jill, more important things.

He suddenly understood what he was going to do. "Sam—I've found you a chance to make a lot of money this time!" "Shouldn't you introduce me to the kind of slut who comes to your door automatically?" Sam Winters thought. He wasn't as happy as Toby. "Haven't you been desperate to find a girl for that Keller movie? Haven't you?" Toby asked. "Well, I found it for you." "Did I know that?" Sam asked. "You met at my house. Jill Castle." Sam remembered Jill.Beautiful face and figure, black hair.Still, the teenage kid in Keller's film is a bit too old.But if Toby Temple wanted her to audition for the part, Sam was ready to say yes. "Let her come and see me this afternoon," he said.

Sam took care to make Jill Castle's audition delicately handled. He sent her one of the studio's top photographers, Keller.Let him audition for Jill himself. Sam saw the dailies the next day.As he expected, Jill's role as a young girl is indeed too mature. Her image is really good. However, she lacks that charisma, that magical charm that seems to jump out of the screen and grab the audience. He called Toby Temple: "I saw Jill's test shot this morning, Toby. She's very photogenic and can speak her lines, but she's not lead material. She could do a little bit I don't know what to do, but if she makes up her mind to be a star, I think she's making a mistake."

Toby drove Jill to a dinner that evening to welcome a new British director to Hollywood.Jill looks forward to this meeting. She opened the door to greet Toby.As soon as he walked in, she knew something was wrong. "Did you hear about the test?" she asked. He nodded reluctantly. "I talked to Sam Winters." He told her what Sam had said.He tried to be as tactful as possible. Jill stood listening to him without saying a word. She turned out to be so sure. The character was so right, too, that somehow she suddenly remembered the gold cup in the window of the department store in her hometown, the little girl who wanted it so badly and didn't get it.Now Jill felt the same disappointment and pain again. Toby said, "Look, honey, take it easy. Winters doesn't know what he's talking about!" However, he clearly knew it was going to die.Jill can no longer live out her dream. All the wounds of the past, all the pain and hope filled with hope, have completely lost their meaning. As his mother had said back then, God was out to take revenge on her, punishing her for reasons she didn't know. She could hear the preaching priest crying, "See that little girl? If she doesn't repent and give her soul to God, she'll be burned in hell for her sins." She came to this city with enthusiasm and dreams, but the city humiliated her severely. An unbearable sadness made her unable to control it any longer. She didn't even know she was crying until later when she felt Toby hugging her hard. "Why! It's all right," he said, and his tenderness made her cry even harder. She stands there.Toby hugged her.She began to tell him all about her: her father's death when she was born; the golden chalice, the holy vessel, her headaches, and all those dark, horrible nights when she waited for God to come down on her.In order to become a star, she came to Hollywood full of aspirations, how many boring, endless odd jobs, and how many unbearable failures and setbacks she suffered (out of a certain instinct, she avoided man).Although at the beginning she deliberately pretended to be like this to Toby; but gradually she was unable to hide herself anymore. It was in this naked self-disclosure that she touched his heart. Her story touched a deep pain in his heart that no one had touched before. He took out his handkerchief and wiped away her tears. "Well, if you think you're miserable," he said, "listen to this. My old man was a butcher..." They talked until three o'clock in the night. It was the first time in Toby's life that he talked to girls as human beings. He understands her.Why can't he?She is him. Neither of the two knew who moved first. What begins as a tender, understanding comfort, turns into a carnal, animal request. They kissed greedily, and he held her tightly. She felt his manhood pressing against her.She needed him, he took off her clothes, she helped him, and then he stood beside her naked, both of them couldn't wait... They make love, talk, and laugh all night long as if they belonged to each other all along. If Toby thought he was infatuated with Jill before, now he was mad for her. They were lying on the bed, he hugged her and protected her, thinking to himself in amazement: this is the so-called love.He turned and stared at her.She is ebullient, shaggy, and stunningly beautiful. He had never loved anyone so deeply. He said, "I'm going to marry you." This is the most natural thing in the world. She hugged him tightly and said, "Oh, yes, Toby." She loved him and she wanted to marry him. It wasn't until hours later that Jill remembered why it all happened in the first place. She needs Toby's power, and she wants revenge on all those who took advantage of her, hurt her, and humiliated her.She was about to take revenge. Now she was about to get to work.
