一个月之中埃克巴斯图兹已经发生三起逃跑事件。可是腾诺却没有跑！他感到极端苦闷。恨不得也立刻去仿效别人。旁观者对一切错误往往看得十分清楚，总觉得自己会作得更好些。腾诺认为，比如，要是不叫沃罗比约夫驾驶，由日丹诺克开车的话，本来是能够甩掉那辆乌鸦车的。那里沃罗比约夫的汽车刚刚被追上，这里腾诺和日丹诺克已经坐下来商讨他们自己该怎样逃跑了。 日丹诺克是个白俄罗斯人，二十六岁，黝黑的皮肤，个子不高，有点流氓气，十分机伶，很懂世故。战争期间他从白俄罗斯被带到德国去，在那里替德国人当过司机。他的刑期也是一张"二十五元券"只要他一来情绪，他可以把全副精力放在工作上，也可以全力以赴地争论、打架、逃跑。不过，他缺少沉着和毅力。但腾诺是沉着而有毅力的。 一切都告诉他们：就是该从石灰场逃跑。如果弄不到汽车，就等逃出营区后劫一辆车。但是，在警卫人员或行动人员干涉他们这个计划之前，惩戒室的犯人班长廖什卡?茨冈（纳夫鲁佐夫）却来找麻烦了。他是只"母狗"，人很瘦弱，但所有的人都怕他。他在劳改营已经害死几十个人了，他能够因为人们不愿把寄来的食物分给他吃，甚至因为一包香烟而轻易地置人于死地。现在他把腾诺叫到跟前，警告说； 逃跑者们还在石灰厂里做了两把刀子：用台子从铁锹上砸下两块铁，在锻工车间磨光、淬火。把锡倒在上模子里铸造刀柄。腾诺用的一把还是"土耳其式"的，它不仅能用，而且那弯曲的明晃晃的样子也挺吓人的，这一点尤其重要，因为他们毕
