This is fiction, but the secret underground city of Krasnoyarsk-26, one of thirteen closed cities dedicated to the manufacture of nuclear weapons, is real. Krasnoyarsk-26 is located in central Siberia, two thousand miles from Moscow.Since its inception in 1958, it has produced more than forty-five tons of weapons-grade plutonium.Although two of the plutonium-producing reactors were shut down in 1992, the remaining one is still operating and currently produces half a ton of plutonium a year that can be used to make atomic bombs. There have been reports of plutonium theft, and the U.S. Department of Energy is working with the Russian government to strengthen security measures to protect the nuclear material.
