Chapter 1 Inoue Yasushi and his works

Loulan 井上靖 696Words 2018-03-21
Born on May 6, 1907 in Hokkaido, Japan. In 1936, he graduated from the Department of Philosophy of Kyoto University (specializing in aesthetics), and then joined the Mainichi Shimbun Osaka Headquarters Department of Culture and Education. In the same year, his debut novel "Circulation" was selected as the "Sunday Daily" award-winning novel. In 1949, he published "Bullfighting" in "Literary World", and won the Akutagawa Award for "Bullfighting" the following year, and became active in the literary world.Since Inoue changed his career from journalism to writing at the age of forty-three, he has written many books and won many awards. He is currently a member of the Japan Academy of Art and a jury member of the Akutagawa Prize.

Inoue is very interested in Chinese history, especially in frontier nomads. His novels are also highly valued by historians. This book contains six short stories, except for "Princess Yongtai's Jewelry", the rest are a series of historical novels (or self-proclaimed historical novels) written by Inoue with the background of the ancient Western Regions of China. In a sense, his historical novels are not the actualization of his dreams.Inoue has been fond of reading travel miscellaneous notes about the Western Regions since he was in college, and his interest has continued unabated. These works finally made him go deep into the core of his dream about the Western Regions.

From Inoue's historical novels, we can certainly see his unrestrained imagination, but on the other hand, he can also strongly feel his respect for the "nature" that exists in historical facts, which is enough to explain that Inoue Yasushi and Mori Ogai , Koda Rohan and other literary figures are also based on the tradition of oriental literature that does not place emphasis on fiction; Inoue Yasushi also has the soul of a historian who is willing to talk with the ancients at night by candlelight. "There is a snake hidden in everyone's heart", Inoue has always been good at describing the loneliness and alienation of modern people with a cold and clear style, but these works do not particularly emphasize the complex psychological relationship between people , some of which are only the cool power of nature, and the struggles among various ethnic groups that appear and disappear with the wind and sand from time to time, ruthless fate, and violent rise and fall. The romance can still deeply touch the readers.

In order to let readers know more about Yasushi Inoue, this book is compiled into the last posthumous work of the late translator Mr. Yu Axun "The Ascetic Monk in Japanese Literary World" to share with readers.
