然而纵然有令人赏心悦目的盛夏美景，也不能稍减遗属们的哀痛心情。
山脊上空不断增加着积云，山体蒸发出来的热气流正在上空奔腾着。久美子目睹着这一切，深感大自然的喜怒无常和它的残酷。
“这条路就要到雪溪了。各位紧紧跟着我们走就没危险。有墨镜和登山鞋的请戴好换上，没有的请到这里来借。”护送队的队长说完，便劝告家属中不能走路的人返回去。有几个看到眼前危岩高耸，雪溪倒挂的情景，就自动接受了劝告。
“要一步一步地慢些走。”
大家在雪溪末端休息片刻之后向上爬去。久美子霍然感到一股凉气直透髓骨。这个山谷较宽敞，坡度不大，比较易行，可是走不远，两边的石壁越来越陡，路也越来越窄了。
“头一个遗体就是在上边不远的地方发现的。”久美子听到领队人说完，好象觉得这山势倍加险恶了。眼看就走到现场的中心地带，家属们的心情不由紧张起来。
路向左转了个大弯，雪溪分成了两股。在这里他们同从右边雪溪下来的搜索队的一个分队相遇了。搜索队拉着一个船形雪橇。家属们看见雪橇，便吵嚷起来。
“又发现了吗？”护送队领队人向一个熟识的队员问。
“发现两个，在赤泽山西边。”
领队人一边瞟着家属，一边压低声音问是男是女。搜索队员摇了摇头，损伤过重辨认不出性别。在家属们的要求下，当即让大家辩认，但看过的人都摇摇头。
“您想看看吗？”一个队员问久美子。这群人之中，只有她一个女的。
“是的。我想看看。”久美子睁大了眼晴，走近雪橇。队员把胶皮苫布卷了起来。映入她眼帘的竟象是一块黑红色的土块……久美子晃晃摇摇地眼看要倒下去的时候，她听到父亲象是在背后好远的地方喊了一声“久美子”！
久美子脸色象贫血似的苍白。遗体损伤惨重，超出了她的想象。在山根看的那些都是多少经过修整的，眼下看的却是遇难时原样未动的尸体。
“那一个没这样严重，”被父亲抱住的久美子恢复镇静以后，那个队员紧跟着说，“请看看吧。”久美子面临着严峻的考验。来到这里不敢认尸岂不是白来了吗？她振作精神，咬了咬牙走上前去仔细观察了一番，觉得都不象雨村。
家属们认完尸之后，和下山的搜索队告别，又向上走去。他们在雪溪的各处看到了白楂的木头墓牌，前面供着花束。不用问，那一定是发现过遗体的地方。
从山巅上一直倒挂着湍急如注的细长雪溪。由于出发晚、路难行，又没有登山经验，所以这伙家属来到岭顶的时候已近黄昏了。
针木岭仅次于南阿尔卑斯山的三伏岭，被称为日本第二高岭，标高二千五百四十一公尺。此时久美子已筋疲力尽了。雪溪上边的路非常难走，深一脚浅一脚地，脚脖子好象折断了似地疼痛。
若说是登山，久美子至多登过奥多摩山，那还是主要靠坐缆车上去的。现在居然能登上针木岭，这完全是由于丈夫遇难，心情异常悲恸所赋予的力量。
在针木岭小旅店里已停放着三具尸体。走到这里来的家属已经认出了其中一具。
晚霞渐渐消失，高大的北阿尔卑斯群峰涂上了一层灰色。这一带从白天的喧嚣中又恢复了平静。从沉沉暮霭笼罩着的山中小屋里，传出了令人心碎的痛哭声。
第二天大清早，久美子就向针木岳走去。多数家属留在小旅馆里，等待着运到这里来的尸体，只有体力强的人继续登上山脊。久美子仰望又陡又高的山峰，心里没底，不知道自己能否登上去。但实际一走，却较为顺利。她一心只想着往上登攀，一时忘却了悲痛。这比在旅馆里心急火燎地等尸体要好得多哩！
从小旅馆开始往上走时，坡度很大，较为吃力，可是走过一段之后，坡度就小了。不久来到了高山植物地带。这里盛开着高山花朵。右侧，可以看到一线残雪。
“那是昨天上山时往右边去的那条雪溪。从山脊到那条雪溪，掉下来的尸体好象最多。”领队人说。
“到那条雪溪去吗？”一个家属问。
“不，落到那一带的尸体几乎搜遍了。一般的人登那个雪溪很危险。”
“那么说是沿着这条山脊再往里去吗？”
“针木岳前边还有昴岳和赤泽岳。在那一带搜索到一些遗体，好象昨天还没来得及运到下边，暂时都集中在针木山顶了。先领你们到那儿看看去。”
这时从山上下来几个登山人。他们的脸都晒得通红，有的人鼻子尖和脖子被晒得一块一块地爆了皮，这些人好象是从大北边沿山脊过来的。
“真惨啊！”
“那是人吗？”
“简直象脏水沟里的黑泥块儿。”
“本想在山顶上吃点早饭，可一点食欲都没了。”
“肚子饿了还不想吃，这是少有的事。”他们似乎没有发觉这一群人是遇难者的家属，你一言我一语地走过去。听他们的话语，山顶上好象存放着不少的遗体。
久美子由于过分劳累，一时忘掉了登山目的。这时突然一腔苦水涌上心头，仿佛身披灿烂霞光显得格外神清气爽的山峦，也蓦地现出了凄怆的愁容。
大约走了一个半小时来到了针木山顶，那里垒了一个很大的石堆作为标识。在离苍天最近的地点停放着遗体，那里散发出阵阵扑鼻的尸臭。
久美子本是为了认尸才登到山顶上来的，可她走到这里却好象有意地避开尸体把视线转向了远方。她看到了两边山夹着的一面湖，刹那间，她似乎觉得丈夫的遗体就沉在那湖底。这也许是她想尽快地确认丈夫遗体的愿望和又不想看到七零五散惨不忍睹的尸体所产生的矛盾心理。
“现在请各位认一认吧。”搜索队员满怀同情地招呼家属们。
结果，久美子没有找到她丈夫的遗体，确切说来，没辨认出来。保持着一定原形的尸体可以认一认，可是象肉片、肉泥似的尸体，纵然是妻子也无法辨认。
在这山顶上放着的尸体中，连部分保持身体原形的都没有，在山麓看到的尸体比起这里的要算完整得多了。人体从高空加速摔到高山的光秃岩石上，就象熟透的水果由空中落到地面一样摔得粉碎。曾听搜索队员未加思索地说，这些尸体活象伯劳鸟叼来的肉。久美子当时还没懂这句话是什么意思，可现在到现场一看就恍然大悟了。
收在这里的尸体，准确地说只是人体的一部分，有的还插在尖刃似的飞机碎片上。由于收尸工作太忙，或是为了做为某种证明，人的肉片还照样挂在金属碎片上，很象被伯劳鸟叼来挂在树枝上的食物一样。黑压压的苍蝇在人肉上叮着。有个家属觉得这太惨不忍睹而提出了抗议。
“我们也想把它拿下来，可是肉粘贴得很紧，拿不下来呀！”一个搜索队员辩解说。
久美子不敢想粘在飞机碎片上的肉是丈夫身上的，她呆呆站在那里，不时闻到扑鼻的尸臭。
太阳已经升得很高了。它好象不知道人间的悲哀和苦楚，从遥远的太空，把它那灿烂的光芒洒向大地。
事故发生后的第三天，几乎所有遇难者的遗体都找到了。最后认定只有两个人的遗体还没找到。飞机坠落地点虽是北阿尔卑斯山的险峻地带，但由于山路修得较好，又时值登山季节，易于进山，所以搜索进行得很顺利。当地的全力协助也起了很大作用。
搜索队为了进一步寻找那两个遗体，扩大了搜索范围，往北一直到鹿岛枪岳，南边到乌帽子岳，西面到黑部湖周围一带。可结果，仍然一无所获。
没找到遗体的两个人中就有雨村征男。在认尸过程中，久美子就有预感，总觉得她丈夫的遗体不在这里。
“从遗体和飞机碎片落下的地点来看，可以认为其中一部分坠落到黑部湖里了。”搜索总部提出了这种看法，飞机残骸复原情况也证明了这一点。
如果到黑部湖去搜索，就要旷日持久了。久美子带着矛盾的心情回到了东京。
政府组成了飞机空中碰撞事故调査委员会。委员会由航空专家和权威组成，下设运输飞行、机械材料和管理制度三个部，决定分头査明事故原因。
事故发生后立即着手调查的长野县警察特别搜索总部，到七月二十三日夜为止，调査结论认为发生事故主要原因有三：1、飞行训练计划不周密。2、自卫队飞机侵入了定期航线。3、町田驾驶员对气象判断有误。同时认为肇事驾驶员町田龙一中尉不能避免刑事责任。因此，当夜就以业务过失造成死亡为由逮捕了町田中尉和飞行队长奧野弘二空军少校。
七月二十四日，县特别搜查总部在警察厅派来的法令专员井关正久和该厅搜查第一科科长的参加下，召开了搜查会议。结果，多数人认为自卫队飞机违犯了航空法第八十三条（冲撞预防义务），从而决定了进一步追查的方针。
航空法第八十三条规定：为了预防同其他飞机碰撞，确保安全，飞机必须遵照运输部所定的飞行航线、速度及其他规定飞行。
国防厅的事故对策委员会发表意见说，町田飞机的直接坠落原因是由于雷击和气象判断错误。
发生事故当日，航空气象台报告北阿尔卑斯山一带出现了积云，并预报积云之中含有雷云。事故发生前小松基地向町田进行联系说：“北阿尔卑斯山北部方面出现雷云要注意”。不过，这个联系不是警告，只是估计性质的劝告。町田根据基地介绍的情况判断，这种程度的积云可以飞行。在遭雷击后，町田中尉跳出飞机，飞机在坠落途中撞上了能登号客机。
根据国防厅发表的情况来看，町田飞机是由于人力无可挽回的原因而坠落的，但在顶着坏天气，硬要进行训练这一点，町田中尉是有过错的。
在调查町田中尉的时候，全日本国内空运公司弄清了在定期航线W14附近自卫队飞机进行过战斗训练这一重大事实。在这以前，社会舆论曾一致指责自卫队飞机冲撞民航机的犯法行为以及防卫厅以雷击为借口进行缓冲的企图。可是当揭露出空军飞机有意地在定期航线附近进行战斗训练的时候，国防厅的缓冲努力也就不起作用了。报界及其他宣传與论界也开始用强硬的语调加以抨击。
有的报纸谴责说“那和被自卫队飞机击落没什么两样”，还有的报纸说“自卫队飞机把民间飞机作为攻击目标开了火”等等。
这些谴责，使自卫队惊慌失措。这个没有得到国民同意的“见不得太阳的军队”，是由于对宪法进行曲解而诞生的。它虽然被国民骂作“偷税的小偷”啦，“白吃饱的大肚子汉”啦什么的，可它却在不加声张地暗中积蓄和扩大着力量。
自卫队如果发生了伤害国民的事，就要痛遭抨击。因为本来应该保护国民生命的军队，反而伤害了国民。
自卫队还没有得到整个国民的承认。在出了事故受到谴责时好象才承认它的存在，这可真是个讽刺。
在此之前，发生过类似的事故。不过，同民用客机空中相撞，而使机中人员全部丧生这样的大事故还是第一次。
现在，正处于国防厅制订新防卫计划，想要取得飞跃发展的重要时刻，当局本想避免一切刺激国民的事态出现。所以当国防厅干部接到出事的消息时，与其说是他们对事故之大感到惊愕，对遭难者及其家属表示哀悼与同情，莫如说他们在捶胸顿足，懊悔莫及地埋怨“在不适当的时候，惹出了不适当的乱子”。
不过，他们觉得还算不幸中之万幸的是，坠落的直接原因是由于雷击。自卫队正想千方百计地用“自然现象不可抗拒”来缓冲沸腾起来的舆论。可是驾驶员却讲了不合自卫队心意的话。町田中尉说“他一直忠实地执行飞行训练计划”。如果起初就预定在这个空中范围进行训练，那么自卫队的飞行计划本身就成了发生事故的直接原因。对自卫队来说是个绝妙的缓冲垫和隐身草的“雷击”，只是促进了事故的发生。这就是说，自卫队飞机如果不侵入民用航线，不管怎么遭雷击也和民间飞机牵连不上。
现在自卫队想制止町田不要“瞎说”已为时过晚。对这次飞行训练计划的严格调查已开始进行。自卫队借口自己的特殊性也无济于事，在强烈的社会舆论面前，不得不勉勉强强地同调查组合作。
不仅对于飞行计划，就连雷达位置记录及其他所有记录、飞行报告等都进行了审查。经过周密的调查，了解到町田飞机虽然知道W14航线，可他还是侵入了这条民用航线。这就更加重了以民间飞机作为目标而进行训练的嫌疑。但町田中尉否认这一点。他说：“我知道W14航线，但我不知道能登号正在飞行。”
根据町田的申述，他是在航线附近训练时遭雷击的。这不象是在自卫队压力下讲的。
町田并非没有受到上司的压力，他在被拘留前，上司就曾告诉他“不要乱讲”。他为什么还敢于讲不利于自卫队的真话呢？这是因为他本人除了是事故的当事人而外，他还想当个正直的证人。航空自卫队干部感到町田的态度是个严重威胁，因为町田在重要时刻惹出乱子，还讲了些大不利于自卫队的证词。恨得他们简直想把町田杀掉。
憎恨町田的不仅有自卫队里的人，还有把自卫队看做是最好主顾的军火制造商。他们也怀着不可告人的目的插足其间，使事态复杂化。
